ATLANTA --- Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue said Monday that guns should be allowed in public areas of the nation's busiest airport.
And he suggested his own wife might want to pack a firearm for long walks between the parking lot and the terminal at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International.
"If my wife wanted to carry a gun, if she was going from the parking lot, walking from one of those far parking lots to pick up a grandchild or something like that, I think that's a good idea, yes," he said Monday.
Earlier this year, Mr. Perdue, a Republican, signed legislation that allows Georgians who have passed criminal background checks to carry concealed weapons onto mass transit and into state parks and restaurants that serve alcohol. The new law took effect July 1.
A legal battle quickly erupted over whether the law applies to public areas of Hartsfield-Jackson before travelers pass through security checkpoints.
On the day the new law took effect, Atlanta officials who oversee the airport declared it a "gun-free zone" and said anyone carrying a gun there could be arrested and charged with a misdemeanor. Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin argued that allowing guns could endanger people because airports remain attractive targets for terrorism.
Gun rights supporters filed a federal lawsuit challenging the designation, saying the airport qualifies as mass transportation and has restaurants that should be accessible under the new law.
Mr. Perdue said Monday he hasn't asked his legal counsel for guidance and was simply offering his own "lay opinion."
An airport official referred calls to the office of Ms. Franklin, where a message was left seeking comment.
The law's sponsor, state Rep. Tim Bearden, praised Mr. Perdue's comments as being "right on the money."
"People have a right to defend themselves. That is what this law is about," said Mr. Bearden, a Republican and former police officer.
A spokesman for Mr. Perdue said the governor has a gun permit but his wife does not.
A hearing is scheduled Aug. 11 in U.S. District Court for the lawsuit filed by GeorgiaCarry.org, which wants a restraining order to keep the airport from enforcing the gun ban.
Lord help this man.
God bless you Governor Perdue!
I guess we are back to the "Wild, Wild West" days. Whats next a shoot out in the middle of the streets. Back to back take 4 steps and fire! My God what have we gotten ourselves into.
What a nut.
What we have got here is a chance for law abiding citizens to protect them selves from the thugs that have taken over our streets....so be warned......
My brother and I fly in and out of ATL and other airports across the country EVERY week and have been doing so for the last six years. Neither of us have seen ANY reason to believe carrying a gun from your car, at ATL, to the terminal will curve any crime rate. Next I guess everyone will be walking around the parking lot, pistol in hand saying "I pity the fool!!" What a ticking time bomb this is set to be. You will be just as safe, getting of the cell phone and making yourself aware of your surroundings and making wise decisions. Why park a mile away from the terminal if you are just making a pick up...walk in well lit areas...women don't walk alone...etc...you know basic self defense.
LOL...the thugs and their supporters just simply do not understand why we need to arm and protect ourselves..too bad cause I am a woman and I will blow your "*&^" away if you mess with me or my family...got it....it's time to stand up to the criminal and demand our own justice..because the law can not do it.
There is no need for comments like "Lord help this man". The ones that the lord needs to help are the ones that live in a bubble. The ones who do not acknowledge that there are bad people out there and they need to be able to protect themself. I assume you are the kind that think that calling 911 is sufficient enough protection.
karma...I'm just curious...how have you been protecting you and your family until now? I hope you know how to use what you have and don't think that gun makes you invincible now. BTW, just b/c a person doesn't support 'toting' in public doesn't mean they support thugs or criminal activity. In fact, I think it's criminal to allow untrain people to carry, even if they do pass background. Every criminal committed a crime for the first time...no one is born a criminal.
Again I ask you Lord help this man.
karmakills123 innocent people get killed trying to be hero's. Look at joe horn what if both of those men had guns. He would be dead right now. Because two people with guns is better than one person with a gun. And that was over some neighbor's house. What if somebody snatches somebody purse at the airport and runs. And a hero has a gun and tries to follow that person. And the person who snatch the purse turns around starts shooting and kills him. And becomes even madder because they found out he had a gun. And starts to shoot more people. Or both of them start shooting at each other. And because they can't really shoot innocent people get hit.
What if, what if, what if monkeys fly out of my behind? How about you just move to DC if you like gun free zones so much? Only criminals carry there, so you should feel very safe getting mugged in the murder capital of the United States. When are you people going to understand that gun bans DO NOT lower crime rates?
thank you Hepkikyo....................I know how to shoot my gun.I took classes and practiced a lot..lol..........................call 911 ?? is that a joke?? It's a new day and the thugs are in trouble...........
actually, Lord help us all ! The mentality it took to stae his" wife may want to cary a gun ..." oh good heavens! First of all no one really has to walk that long trek. unless the want to. There are shuttles availabe. dsecondly, I wouldnt want a bunch of people NOT familiar with weapons walking around unleashed and have a car back fire near by. Talk about panic! and what happened to all the " security" since 9/11? talk about a giant step backwards!
I do the believe the following statement from the article says it all:
"Mr. Perdue, a Republican," Someone save us from this lunacy and backwoods, redneck mentality!!! It would seem the security in place because of 9/11 would disqualify this from even being a problem.
What a waste of time and money on litigation about such nonsense.
