Welcome compromise

Congress finally did something productive to keep us safe last week with its passage of the terrorist surveillance act.

And our friends on the far left will never, ever understand it.

Indeed, Democratic nominee-to-be Barack Obama was savaged on the Internet's liberal blogs after voting for the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act.

Obama had previously helped block the bill from becoming law, saying among other things that he objected to granting immunity for telecommunications companies that cooperate with the government in terrorism cases.

That was then; this is now. We don't know why he changed his position, except for the fact that he is now trying to appeal to less liberal general-election voters -- and with two-thirds of the Senate approving the bill Wednesday, there was a considerable political tailwind in that direction.

Regardless, it was the right thing to do.

Liberal extremists totally mischaracterize the bill as an attack on civil liberties. Quite the opposite: The law actually strengthens protections against surveillance of American citizens, both at home and abroad, and requires judicial oversight of surveillance of terror suspects.

In short, the bill is a miracle of compromise. And while it's rightly viewed as a victory for President Bush, it will actually help the next president more in his duty to prevent terrorism against America and Americans.

I don't know what the Chronicle staff have been smoking, but if its powerful enough to make them think that this bill has ANY Constitutional authority, then I want some. The wiretaps, both domestic and international, are illegal to begin with (written into "law" only on the questionable merit of a signing statement), and the fact that telecom companies are being granted immunity in their acquiesence to such a corrupt practice should be absolutely maddening (not to mention the financial implications...we're seeing a good deal of mutual backscratching here, which could influence future campaign donations and backing). True, FISA court permission is required to wiretap an American overseas, but there is also a provision in the bill that allows for the bypassing of such permission in cases of "emergency," though to whose discretion this status is left, is uncertain.

Did you know that there are some who have been mistaken and get detained for a time, delayed in their travels, and even accused falsely? One Lawyer is getting detained all the time for he is on the list when HE is an AMERICAN! Go figure.

GACopperhead

The Chronicle has never understood that the USA has a Constitution.....

Ga Values

The Chronicle was at one time a CONSERVATIVE newspaper now it's just a Republican rag. The Republican Party was once conservative now it is a bunch of big spending, big government, owned by special interest HACKS. I want my paper & party back.

The government school graduates that subscribe to the far left political spin have spoken. Even Obama, a far left politician, knows that national defense requires intelligence. While he was pandering to his base, he could act like defense was just the duty of the right, but now that he wants to be president, he has to admit that national defense is everyones responsibility. Obama can do real well playing the fool if he only has to appeal to the left, but he has to appear intelligent if he wants to get enough votes to be president.

sjgraci

What this law proves is that the President of the United States broke the law.

Ga Values

patriciathomas...It is so sad you are so stupid & don't understand what a CONSERVATIVE is, you should apply for a paying job on the AC, you are what Billy Morris is looking for.

LaTwon

if you abandon your constitution, what are you protecting?
vote libertarian, BOB BARR 2008 shake it up.............

willistontownsc

Green Party nominee Cindy McKinney is a better choice than Barr.

Also, I'm glad that the ACLU wasted no time in filing a lawsuit against this bill. This should be a slam dunk case in overturning this amnesty-for-telecoms bill. But, when you have five activist judges the Bushes and Reagan put on the US Supreme Court, then the one thing that is certain is that they cannot be trusted to uphold our Constitution -- inthis case, it is the fourth Amendment of our Constitution.

Bizarro

The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act is thirty years old this year setting up the FISA court system. The SCOTUS has ruled differentlly in different cases. The problems came in 2006, 2007, and 2008 when they started trying to fix some problems but Bush was also seeking more executive power in that regard. Remember a Dem Congress passed this 60-28 by the Senate but we will see what the House will do with it.

patriciathomas

tom ga hunter, there's nothing conservative about ignoring national defense. We are at war.

imdstuf

I wish someone like PT would get detained just by her name alone, thrown in a cell for several months with no trial, then have someone say "oops" and release her so she can find out she has no job because she disappeared for several months, find out she has been written off for dead so her credit is gone, etc.

jack

For you ignorant azzes, if the FISA is unconstitutional, the SCOTUS will strike it or some of it's provisions that may be found to be unconstitutional. All of you yahoos know little about how your government works. BTW, we have been spying on foreigners/foreign goverments for decades. It is called gathering intelligence and conuter intelligence for you who don't have the intelligence to understand that.

jack

Sigraci, why has Bush not been indicted/impeached if he broke the law. Seems he has protected YOUR and my [filtered word] since 9/11 doing whatever he has been doing for national defense. I realize you DIMs just don't get it when it comes to national defense.

jack

Williston calling the conservatives on the SCOTUS activists is the joke of the day.

jack

imdstuf, name the person you are talking about being held for months without a lawyer. Even the rag head terrorists now get to have a lawyer.

rufus

All this talk about wire tap makes me want to go find a beer tap

patriciathomas

yeah imdstuf, a person walking down the road minding their own business and not involved in international terrorism in any way is often picked up and held for months with no explanation. I'll bet it's happened to you a lot of times. Why not tell us about just one of those times.

LaTwon

the ceo of quest communications refused to allow these taps.
he stated it was against the law. the justice dept then launched
attacks on him personally for insider trading and irs BS and cost him millions on legal fees. seig heil......................
he was found innocent. welcome to the land of the free.......

griesella

When the hearings were held regarding this bill, no one could furnish proof that any American citizens have been mistreated due to this act.

Bizarro

I find some irony in the fact that Kennedy, Clinton and McCain voted against it and Obama voted for it. Now all you Obama supporters explain your candidate the man for CHANGE-ROFLMAO. The definition of a U.S. liberal should be easily duped and ignorant. McCain is a better Dem than Obama. Looks like the Dem's picked the wrong nominee. Ha,ha,ahaah.

Ga Values

patriciathomas---you big government DEMOCRATS-RINOes have destroyed our way of life.. I assume you are 1 of Saxby's pro amnesty fans.

Bizarro

We see Obama is a strict unconstitutionalist. I guess he sees that as the new President he will inherent all this executive authority and priviledges for his plan to become king. King George failed with his coup but King Barak may stand a better chance for his new fascist regime. And all the while I thought he was a socialist. Go figure. hee, hee, hee, hee.

rufus

It's just an extension of CALEA that mandates that all phone companies and ISP's have the ability to tap phones and e-mails when asked by law enforcement.

peterpaulandmary

If you ain't doing anything wrong and the most you're doing is conducting phone sex between two consenting adults, don't sweat the small stuff.

rufus

I too love to have sex with two

RockyMayer

Anyone watch Boston Legal? the episode where there are lots of Denny Crane's that are all on the terrorist list comes to mind...

peterpaulandmary

oops, forgot the "w" in to

peterpaulandmary

Come on moderator cops, little rough with johnson's comment, aren't we. Sure you are not gestapho? Deleted because he used the word sex????? GEEZ!
