Summer Showcase set for area gyms
The Peach State Summer Showcase, an AAU boys basketball event in its second year, begins today at 1 p.m., with games at five gyms around the area.
Nearly 60 teams are expected to compete in the three-day event, which begins a day before the start of the Nike Peach Jam, a national AAU event in North Augusta.
Admission for the Summer Showcase is $10 per day for adults and $5 for children 10 and under. A three-day pass is $25.
Games will be played at gyms at Aquinas, Curtis Baptist, Glenn Hills Middle, USC Aiken and Aiken Tech. For more information, see www.peachstateshowcase.com.
Former Jag earns spot in British Open
In Southport, England, former Augusta State golfer Jamie Elson earned a spot in his first British Open, claiming medalist honors at Hillside Golf Club in the 36-hole final for local qualifying.
Elson followed his opening-day 67 with 73 to get through with ease at 4-under.
He was boosted by a first-round hole-in-one.
- In Macon, Ga., Augusta State golf coach Josh Gregory shot 2-under-par 68 and is tied for second after the opening round of the Georgia State Amateur at Idle Hour Club.
Gregory trails Robert Sheats , of Atlanta, by two shots. Forty-two players were not able to finish the first round because of an extended weather delay.
The only other area player among the top 40 is Evans' Chris Waters , who is tied for 15th after 72.
Jaguar saddled with felony drug charge
Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver Matt Jones faces a charge of felony possession of a controlled substance in his former college town of Fayetteville, Ark., after police say he was inside a car cutting up cocaine with a credit card.
- Jacksonville owner Wayne Weaver has denied a report published by the Philadelphia Daily News that said he is selling the team to an owner who could move the team to Los Angeles.
Warriors acquire Maggette's services
The Golden State Warriors acquired free agent swingman Corey Maggette . Contract details were not released.
- Sacramento Kings center Brad Miller was suspended for five games by the NBA because he violated the league drug program.

NHL ends threat of its players bolting
In Zurich, Switzerland, the NHL reached an agreement with the Continental Hockey League, a new Russian league, that temporarily ends the threat of players being lured away by big-money offers.
Spaniards will face off in Swedish Open
In Bastad, Sweden, top-seeded David Ferrer and Tommy Robredo won in straight sets to reach the Swedish Open quarterfinals.
Ferrer, the defending champion, defeated Boris Pashanski , 7-5, 6-1. Robredo defeated veteran Jonas Bjorkman , 6-2, 6-3.
