LAVONIA, Ga. - Mrs. Shirley J. George, 77, of Lavonia, GA and formerly of Aiken, SC, beloved wife of the late James Lamar George and daughter of the late Thomas J. and Margaret Elizabeth 'Peg' Bachman Jackson, died Thursday, July 10th, 2008. Born in Canton, OH, she had lived in St. Augustine, FL and Homerville, GA, before moving to Aiken, SC, in 1963. In 2004, she relocated to Lavonia, GA, to be closer to her family. She had worked for the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, D.C. in the early 1950's and later served as Assistant Civil Defense Director of Aiken County, SC, in the 1960's. Mrs. George was a Co-Founder and Owner of W.V.A.P. Radio Station. Family members include her daughter, Pamela George Stone, (Dale) Lavonia, GA; sister, the late Mary Margaret Jackson Minor, and granddaughters, Melissa Lauren Stone and Heather Michelle Stone. Funeral services will be held Sunday, July 13th, 2008, at 2 o'clock from the graveside in Sunset Memorial Gardens, Graniteville, SC, with Dr. Larry Finger officiating. The family has asked that memorials be made to North East Georgia Animal Shelter or the Arthritis Foundation.
