By all means let's stop talking about the character and integrity of the man who might be president.....it's simply not fair!
Your July 4 polemic on patriotism ("What is patriotic?") is discredited by your choice of cartoon ridiculing Barack Obama for something his wife said several months ago. We have real issues to deal with -- wars in the Middle East, the economy at home, health care for the nation, the energy crisis and global warming, to name a few. Why not challenge his stance on these issues rather than using snippets of gossip?
Waving flags is not a meaningful show of patriotism, but defending the values that define our nation is supporting the American experiment. One of the most valuable of these is the way in which we elect those who govern us.
The tactic of attack by innuendo -- such as the attack on John McCain in South Carolina during the 2000 election, and the Swift-boating of John Kerry in 2004 -- was meant to sully their names and to diminish their heroic service to our nation in favor of one who did not measure up. This gamesmanship is clever, but it is not supportive of bringing out the best qualities of our candidates or of advancing their best programs.

Mr Phillips, I think you are using the term swift boating in its new re-invented sense. The swift boat veterans were those that Sen Kerry served with during his time in Vietnam and they called him on his BS. It was not a smear campaign, but rather a group of people who knew what happened over there and worked to get the truth out. The left has created the term swift boating to mean smearing, but it is contrived, who would have guessed?

Is it mudslinging when I mention that fact that Obama is now saying he is embarrassed by the fact that most Americans speak only one language. As Jesse Jackson said and we have all been saying, Obama looks down on the American people.
