3 jailed after armed robbery attempt

Three Augusta men remained in the Richmond County jail Sunday night in connection with an attempted weekend robbery at a Gordon Highway ATM.

Carl Crawford, 18; Rodriguez Crawford, 21; and Christopher McNair, 20, face charges of attempted armed robbery, according to Richmond County sheriff's Investigator Brandon Beckman.

Police said the men tried to rob someone at the Bank of America ATM at 1749 Gordon Highway.

Carl Crawford is also charged with aggravated assault and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, Investigator Beckman said.

Mr. Crawford is accused of firing a handgun twice toward the ground, wounding the victim in the foot and leg, police said.

County, school board hold hearings on taxes

Rollback hearings to set Columbia County's millage will start Tuesday.

Two of the state-mandated three public hearings will be held at 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Evans Government Complex at 630 Ronald Reagan Drive.

The third hearing will be at 5:30 p.m. July 15. The county commission will likely set the millage rate after the final hearing.

State law requires rollback hearings when tax-collecting agencies plan to accept additional income generated by growth.

The school board started the first of its own three rollback hearings last week. The final two meetings are scheduled for Tuesday at 7:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. at the Board of Education, 4781 Hereford Farm Road, Evans. The school board will likely set the millage rate after the final hearing Tuesday.

Residents must boil water in New Ellenton

About 500 New Ellenton area residents are being warned to boil their water until Wednesday because a city-owned well malfunctioned, city officials said Sunday.

Jermaine Holmes, of the New Ellenton Public Works Commission, said several customers near Dry Branch and Talatha Church roads reported having water that was orange and had a gritty texture.

"We think the well may have been struck by lightning and the casing was cracked," Mr. Holmes said.

For details, call the New Ellenton Water Commission at (803) 652-2862.

It will just be probation.

Buy a gun, get a gun permit, and carry both. Ronnie, Clay and their people can't be everywhere at all times. Be prepared to protect your loved ones, yourself and your homestead from any thugs who might be so stupidly brash as to attempt to violate any of them.

nightcop

chris mcnair....i can't tell you how many times we have dealt with that [filtered word]. since he was 16 at least. he'll end up dead within a few years anyway, so no worries.

HYPOCRITES 08

Should not be too bad, as long as he did not have a drink while shooting up the club. What about the [filtered word] that did this shooting? Nightcop, I agree with you about McNair.

Hepkikyo

Firefighterhamer - How come you aren't bad mouthing law abiding citizens who obtain gun permits for self defense? They MUST be the ones shooting up the bars, right?

pav2003

Does anyone know if this Chris McNair is a part of that same McNair family who was last year arrested for the shotting a Super C's Nightclub? Just curious....What about it nightcop... Do you know if he is???

the flamingo

the shooting at the road house, i know someone that was in it when it happen the cops did nothing to look for the guy. they wouldnt even finger print where the guy flatted the tires on the cars. what are we paying them for if they just stand around.

DoubleD

It's funny that I was at that same ATM on Thursday night at around 1045PM. I told my buddy to get my back, because "You know the are we're in right now..."

HYPOCRITES 08

Everyone is law abiding, until they break a law. I own several weapons, but I still do not see a need to carry one in a airport or bar.

usnvet

Cops carry guns, so if the constitution is still in effect, (which I seriously doubt) then everyone should be able to carry guns. Don't let the cop mongers on your local propaganda TV station brainwash you into thinking anything else. We need less cops, fewer laws and more aggressive citizens!!

Waymore

Hey, the flamingo....you watch too much TV. You can't fingerprint flatted (sic) tires. The investigators do a bang up job. Just because you heard the cops (sic) didn't do anything doesn't mean that they didn't do anything. In police work, there is more than meets the eye. Are you going to eat crow when they catch the shooter?
