Broun, Fleming collide over conservatism, past

  • Follow Metro

ATLANTA --- The thrust and parry between U.S. Rep. Paul Broun and challenger Barry Fleming swirled around who is the more conservative candidate, even through the lens of personal -- and perhaps painful -- questions about the incumbent's past in a debate between the 10th congressional district candidates Wednesday night.

Mr. Broun, R-Athens, and Mr. Fleming, R-Harlem, squared off in a forum held at Georgia Public Broadcasting and organized by the Atlanta Press Club.

Mr. Fleming, who is leaving his post in the General Assembly to challenge the first-term congressman in the July 15 Republican primary, dredged up Mr. Broun's decades-old bankruptcy and contempt-of-court charges for failure to pay alimony as signs of bad judgement.

"How can you be a voice for fiscal conservatism with a past like that?" Mr. Fleming asked.

A bristling Mr. Broun fired back to say the bankruptcy was the result of a business failure, and then questioned Mr. Fleming's attacks on bills he has voted against in Congress, including one against a bill to require Internet service providers to monitor their subscribers' usage for child pornography. Mr. Broun said bills he voted against were sponsored by highly liberal members of Congress, and threw doubt on the conservative high ground Mr. Fleming attempted to attack him from.

Mr. Fleming also accused Mr. Broun of trying to gain Democratic votes via a changed position on gay marriage. Mr. Broun contends his position didn't change, only whether the ban should be first pushed on the state or federal level.

Mr. Broun, a doctor by trade, rolled through a list of socially and fiscally conservative organizations that have endorsed his candidacy as his evidence that he is the stronger and more popular conservative candidate.

Both of these candidates

Both of these candidates would be good for the state. Fleming is just trying to improve his career by bumping Broun. I think he's hurting himself with his mud slinging efforts. They seem to be ineffective and non productive. He should have tried for a Democrat's seat.

I met Fleming recently and he seems nice enough, but he has no problem getting ugly when he thinks it serves his purpose.

Barry Fleming's campaign

Barry Fleming's campaign strategy has brought attention to himself as a politician who can find no fault with Dr. Broun's performance thus far, and Fleming has had to resort to decades old issues such as divorces and a bankruptcy. Barry Fleming should shut up and sit down because clearly Dr. Broun is doing a great job and deserves the opportunity to continue to do so.

I am tired of this

I am tired of this mudslinging. Why did Barry have to go there? Dr. Broun I believe is doing what he said he would do in Congress and that is why I voted for him last year and that is why I will vote for him again this year. Why couldn't Barry have just waited until 2012 after redistricting after the 2010 Census. Georgia is almost certain to pick up at least 1 Rep. District and I feel pretty sure they will break up the 10th district with Athens in an upper district and Augusta in a lower district. This way Dr. Broun could represent the upper district and Barry could have ran for the lower district seat but no the Columbia County Republican machine got their feelings hurt when Mr. Whitehead lost and Barry had to start running for the 10th District before Dr. Broun even made his first vote. This is more than just Columbia County, it is trying to make sure Georgia Conservative values is what goes forward in Washington and Dr. Broun is doing an excellent job of putting those forward.

Fleming should have been

Fleming should have been satisfied to keep his seat in the general assembly for a while, after all, this was just his first term. I have heard he is a slick lawyer and I have some opinions about slick lawyers and most of them are not good. I believe he has taken some partial truths about issues Broun has voted on, added some partial untruths and twisted them into slick legal mumbo jumbo to try and confuse everyone. I have been very pleased with Broun's performance in the congress and I believe he has garnered the respect of many of his fellow congressmen and republicans. A man's past should be forgiven & overlooked if he has changed his ways and tried to do right in the years since then. I attended a supper to meet Lee Anderson and was impressed with him. I plan on voting for Anderson to take the seat in the state assembly that Fleming abandoned.

Good post, FAIR TAX Now, I

Good post, FAIR TAX Now, I couldn't agree with you more. Apparently you were posting while I was composing mine. I, too, voted for Broun last time and will vote for him again. I feel like Fleming is just causing division in the party by running for this now. Your screen name suggests you are for the "Fair Tax". I am for it too.

If Broun says one more time

If Broun says one more time Fleming is picking on him, I'm going to puke. Let's discuss the issues and voting records of both candidates.

Broun simply outclasses

Broun simply outclasses Fleming who, more and more, resembles that little bedwetter guard in The Green Mile. If he's the best Columbia County can come up with, get ready to salute the Medical College of Athens.

I don't know so much about

I don't know so much about fleming, except he likes to make straw man arguments. He said Broun was in favor of pedophiles, when he voted against a law that would have made it illegal for you to take a picture of your infant or toddler taking a bath or streaking around the house. Hell, if that were the case, America's Funniest Videos would be taken off the air.

Barry Fleming is by far the

Barry Fleming is by far the better candidate in this race.
I love how the Broun supporters call it "mud-slinging" whenever something negative is said about Paul Broun. As a public official, Paul Broun should expect to hear criticism. His yearlong stay in the House has been filled with questionable votes. The fact of the matter is that the man is not only an ineffective leader, but a man of questionable morality. He does not feel the need to protect our children and his stance on "family values" can be questioned by his FOUR marriages. The list goes on and on.
It's time for a change. I wholeheartedly support Barry Fleming for Congress.

I wouldn't vote for Fleming

I wouldn't vote for Fleming for dog catcher. If the only way he can make himself look good is to attack his opponent, he has nothing to offer. He only has an (R) next to his name to make him more acceptable to the voters in the district.

I'm having trouble with the

I'm having trouble with the constant references to Fleming as a RINO and Broun as the "Republican". A few folks need to make a visit to the SOS website for the results of the special election in 07.

Look at the votes Broun got in June; then add to them the combined votes for all "D" candidates in June. The totals (especially county by county) correlate very closely to the votes that Broun got in the July runoff...

Broun won by pandering to the Democrats...so whose the RINO???

Broun has established himself

Broun has established himself as more of a libertarian-leaning maverick, but Glenn and company in Atlanta would probably prefer to see a more housebroken representative. Broun's votes shows he is not housebroken, and that ticks off guys like Barry it seems. Barry is housebroken and will never wet on the carpet. Unfortunately, there are more important things than the carpet.
