Government takes and redistributes

  • Follow Letters

I am always amazed when I read a letter from a reader who believes that the government has the ability to give its citizens anything ("Hillary Clinton cartoon was shameful," June 28). Maybe those readers know something that I don't know. When I went to school, I was taught that the government did not have the means to give anything -- the government doesn't have anything to give. It has the ability to take from those who have and redistribute it to others, and that happens all the time. The government doesn't give you anything; it is paid for by the people.

The writer stated that the Democrats gave us Medicare and Social Security. That's a joke. They passed a law along with those stupid Republicans that made working people pay for those programs, then the all-giving Democrats (Lyndon Johnson and crowd -- the Great Society), along with the stupid Republicans, stole the Social Security fund to fund a program that has kept people in poverty to this day. The people whom we elect make laws that keep them in their positions; that's all they care about. There should be term limits on all elected officials, because the people are too stupid to vote them out.

In November, the election will direct the government on the way the people want it to go -- and if Barack Obama is elected, the government will have open license to steal everything from the working class and give it to those who are kept in poverty. Of course, John McCain is not my pick for president either. I wish Zell Miller was running.

Verlon McLeod, Augusta

While there is a small

While there is a small percentage in America that need help, there is a huge percentage that receives help. Social programs cost about 6 times what the war costs. Redistribution of wealth is a great vote buyer. Obama '08!

McLeod's letter is excellent

McLeod's letter is excellent and on target. Congress found out long ago how easy it is to be generous with other people's money, i.e., yours and mine.

Voting for a third candidate

Voting for a third candidate won't change the fact that either McCain or Obama (probably Obama) will be our next president.

The Democrats typically

The Democrats typically promise "pie in the sky" programs for those less fortunate, financed by those who have educated themselves, worked hard, and enjoy the partial fruits of their labor (the other part is given to those who think they are "entitled"). This is how government gets bigger, and keeps those needy folks reliant on the government, thus keeping government programs neceassary (a vicious circle). The American people who are the ones who know best how to spend their own money, yet BO and HRC promise programs that are paid for by hard working citizens. Patricia is absolutely correct, there are many people who get help who do not need it. Americans are generous, and want to help the needy. It is those who do not "need" the help, but do not want to work and sponge off the government (ie. hard working people) that actually drain the government coffers.

I agree with everything in

I agree with everything in the letter up until the last sentence. Zell is a wacko. The only distinction between Retardicans and Dimocrats is, well, nothing. They both love spending other people's money, doing whatever it takes to stay elected, and engorging themselves on milk from the teat of society.

flip flop flip flop... this

flip flop flip flop... this guy needs to be on TLC or HGTV. From the AP - Democrat Barack Obama is opening the door to altering his Iraq policy. Campaigning in North Dakota, Obama says his upcoming trip to Iraq could alter his plan to bring U.S. troops home within 16 months. The Illinois senator says it all depends on what he hears in consultations with military commanders there

barack hussein obama the

barack hussein obama the do-nothing senator from the corrupt govt of IL will have to check with his handlers before he can make a comment. The state of IL has gone from $8billion in debt to $20billion in debt from 2003 to 2008 just in pension pay. bo worked for ACORN (the association of community organizations for reform new), a left-wing group that takes 40% of its money from the taxpayers and promotes the welfare state and undermines capitalilism and self reliance which has perpetuated illegal immigration and encouraged voter fraud. Last july, ACORN settled the largest case of voter fraud in the history of washington state. bo changes his mind daily. i guess this is the experience and "change" that he intends to give us and his followers want.

'Heavenly Father, we come

'Heavenly Father, we come before you today to ask your forgiveness and to seek your direction and guidance. We know Your Word says, 'Woe to those who call evil good,' but that is exactly what we have done. We have lost our spiritual equilibrium and reversed our values. We have exploited the poor and called it the lottery. We have rewarded laziness and called it welfare. We have killed our unborn and called it choice. We have shot abortionists and called it justifiable. We have neglected to discipline our children and called it building self esteem. We have abused power and called it politics. We have coveted our neighbor's possessions and called it ambition We have polluted the air with profanity and pornography and called it freedom of expression. We have ridiculed the time-honored values of our forefathers and called it enlightenment. Search us, Oh God, and know our hearts today; cleanse us from every sin and Set us free. Amen!

We should be thanking our

We should be thanking our federal government for social security , Medi-Care and Medcaid. There are millions of seniors whose only income is social security. Visit any hospital and see poor seniors receiving health care.
I am glad to pay taxes and I pay a hugh amount because of my investments. I rather be on the paying end than the receiving end. I remember when we had no social security and welfare and poor people went around begging for food and spending change. My daddy feed a lot of people for free because he operated a grocery store.
Do we want to go back to the days when the poor suffered?
When we locked up the mental patients or the hobos riding the rails? We feed a lot of hobos too.
The thirties and forties were bad times.
Do we want to return to those days?
Count your blessings and thank your God for your
well being.

in the 30's and 40's you also

in the 30's and 40's you also had less crime. You didn' t have kids killing kids in school with guns. you had kids that knew their and who knew who their daddy was and where he was. (and it was jail). You had people that would try to work instead of standing in line for a handout. You knew your neighbors. you left your doors unlocked. you helped others and others helped you. So yep in a lot of whys seem like that was a better time. how do we get back there?
