ASTROS: Pitcher Roy Oswalt hopes to make his next start after leaving Monday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers because of a strained left hip.

"I think I'll be OK," said Oswalt, who's due to start Saturday in Atlanta.

METS: Interim manager Jerry Manuel is keeping Pedro Martinez on regular rest and will pitch him today while giving younger Mike Pelfrey an extra day. Both pitched in a doubleheader on Friday. Pelfrey will pitch Thursday.

PHILLIES: Brett Myers , who is leading the major leagues with 24 home runs allowed, agreed to be optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

DIAMONDBACKS: Put left fielder Eric Byrnes on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left hamstring.

GIANTS: Recalled catcher Eliezer Alfonzo , nine days after he completed a 50-game suspension for testing positive for a performance-enhancing substance. Alfonzo began his minor league assignment with the GreenJackets.

GRIEVANCE: The players' association filed a grievance over the release of former Houston pitcher Shawn Chacon , saying the team's decision to terminate his contract was without just cause. Chacon was released Monday, five days after a physical altercation with general manager Ed Wade.

YANKEES: Shortstop Derek Jeter was left out of the lineup Tuesday night against the Rangers.

"No, I'm not hurt. I'll let you know tomorrow," Jeter told reporters in the clubhouse. "Wish I had a story for you but he just wanted to give me a day off."

Jeter was referring to his manager, Joe Girardi , who gave the captain the news on his way home from the ballpark after New York's 2-1 loss on Monday night.

- Outfielder Hideki Matsui might take batting practice Thursday or Friday, but Girardi would not rule out surgery for the left fielder/designated hitter.

MARINERS: Felix Hernandez was placed on the 15-day disabled list late Monday night as Seattle decided the best treatment for his sprained left ankle was a few more days of rest.

The move was retroactive to June 24, meaning Hernandez is eligible to come off the disabled list July 8.

Hernandez, 6-5 with a 2.83 ERA, was injured June 23 against the New York Mets. Earlier in that game Hernandez became the first American League pitcher in 37 years to hit a grand slam, but was later injured when Carlos Beltran slid into his leg covering home on a wild pitch.

ORIOLES: Baltimore's carousel at shortstop took another whirl when the team placed Alex Cintron on the 15-day disabled list and recalled Freddie Bynum from Triple-A Norfolk.
