ATHENS, Ga. --- U.S. Rep. Paul Broun is trying to return to Congress for a second term, but his past might come back to haunt him.
The Athens Republican declared bankruptcy, didn't pay his taxes and fought with an ex-wife over alimony payments while living in Americus in the late 1970s and early 1980s, according to records unearthed by GOP opponent Barry Fleming's campaign.
In his four previous runs for federal office, rumors circulated, but politicians and journalists considered him a fringe candidate and didn't delve too deep into his past. Sumter County and federal court documents offer detailed information about his transgressions.
Mr. Fleming said he hasn't read the records, but he feels Mr. Broun's misbehavior two or three decades ago makes him a poor role model and opens him to attacks from Democrats.
"I don't know if Republicans fully knew who they were electing to Congress" in 2007, said the state representative from Harlem.
Mr. Broun often talks about his overspending, drinking and divorces as part of his story of becoming a born-again Christian more than 20 years ago.
"I've been very open about my background," he said. "Look at who I am today. I haven't lived a perfect life. I don't have a perfect past. I'm a different person than when I accepted Jesus Christ as my lord and savior."
But the records offer more detail than Mr. Broun has volunteered. He falsified financial documents in an effort to obtain a loan and misrepresented his assets and debts during bankruptcy proceedings, a federal judge ruled in 1983. He ordered Mr. Broun to pay an Americus bank $69,653.07.
The Internal Revenue Service placed a lien on Mr. Broun because he owed $61,584.10 in back taxes from 1977 through 1981. He paid the taxes in the late 1980s, according to legal documents.
Mr. Broun also went to court with an ex-wife over whether he was paying all of the alimony and child support required by his divorce settlement. A Sumter County judge ordered him in 1984 to pay $467 plus interest.
Mr. Broun's financial troubles stemmed from a bad economy and some business failures, he said. He has been married to his fourth wife, Niki, for 23 years and has a good relationship with his ex-wives and children by a previous marriage, he said.
In Augusta, rumors swirled in political circles last year, but that's all, said Debbie McCord, the chairwoman of the Columbia County Republicans. She said she wasn't sure how voters would react if they knew of Mr. Broun's past.
Former state Sen. Jim Whitehead knew about Mr. Broun's history when they ran against each other last year, but Mr. Whitehead said he chose not to use the information.
"I feel like people don't want to hear it," he said. "I know I don't want to hear it. I'm not criticizing Barry Fleming, but I don't think it's the right thing to do."
Doncha hate it when the other guy gets into your closet and stars to clean?
Most Democrat's define telling the truth as negative campaigning. Whatever happened to our right to know? One's honesty, willingness to pay one's debts are fairly important to me.
I was undecided as to whom I would vote for in the upcoming
election, but now that Mr. Fleming has investigated Mr. Broun
background, I feel he is reaching way back into the past to find something negative about his opponent. I personally think that
a lot of good people do not want to run for public office for fear
that some idiot will find out something negative about them without disclosing the circumstances behind the incident. Maybe
Mr. Broun filed bankruptcy because of his divorce or medical
expenses or who cares and apparently he paid his taxes and
ailimony. Sometimes when a business deal goes bad it takes
years to get yourself back in good standing with finances, but
it is easy to criticize someone instead of acknowledging their
accomplishments. I vote for Broun because now I know he
knows what tough times are about, he has been there and done that. He knows what it is to not have enough money to pay
his obligations, but he did eventually get it done.
i went to the Broun-Fleming debate last week at the Columbia County Library. Fleming twice called Broun a liar during their segments and waxed negatively on several other points, much to the glee of two dour-looking older women planted front and center in the audience. Fleming chose the low route and plans to stick with it, yet he claims to have the superior character. Sounds like he stole a copy of the Clinton political play book.
Broun had a rocky youth. He made mistakes and grew to the point where realized he needed to take whatever steps necessary to fix what he could. Since reaching that point in his life, over two decades ago, he's been the exemplary citizen we want in office. Fleming seems to come across as not wanting people to improve their lives. That seems a strange tack.
Broun ran for Congress when he lived in Americus, GA and lost. He moved to Atlanta and ran again, another loss. He moved to Athens and ran again for our district. Lucky us, he finally won in a fluke. He is partners in Broun Brothers Investing with his brother, Conway, who was indicted for missing funds from a golf course development. LandSouth partner, James Daws, runs Flordia registered corporations out of the same office with the Brouns. Yeah, buddy, lots on his plate.
I feel that anyone does and can make mistakes in their life, but Broun seems to have overcome those mistakes. I think Mr. Fleming has helped me to decide who to vote for, Mr. Broun!!
Sounds good to me getalife...At least he has been open with his mistakes and made something of his life....:-)
Simple choice Broun is a conservative, Fleming is a big spending big government RHINO. Which do you want?
I pleaded guilty to misdemeanor drug possession in 1979 and was arrested for DUI in 1982. I think I'll stick with Mr. Broun. I'm a good man now, and so is he. I also commend Mr. Whitehead for taking the moral high road when he ran against Mr. Broun.
If I were Jim Whitehead, I would endorse Congressman Paul Broun for re-election in tomorrows paper. Barry Fleming resents his missing the opportunity when he stepped aside for Jim. The negative campaigning that only Barry has resorted to, is indicative of the friends and cohorts he has employed for advice. The mean spirit is much less attractive than anything he can drag up out of Dr. Broun's past. And Nikki Broun, his wife, is the kind of supportive wife every man wishes he had on his team. These are friendly, touchable people that have demonstrated their humanity, their dedication, and their self-respect over and over to the people of Columbia County as well as the balance of the District.
It would be well for all those who support Fleming to check into his past as well. His behavior in Columbia County as a commissioner certainly would not put him in the conservative ranks. He came into politics as a Dem turned Republican, but he was a big spender and never saw a tax increase he did not just love
Give me a break! Mr. Fleming said he hasn't read the records, but he feels Mr. Broun's misbehavior two or three decades ago makes him a poor role model and opens him to attacks from Democrats.??? How about little honesty, Mr. Fleming. Your current behavior is far more ofensive to me than the mistakes Mr. Broun made 20 or 30 years ago.
Barry Fleming is getting on my nerves. His mud slinging has made it clear to me who I will be voting for come election. He should have stayed in state government, he could have been Speaker of the House. Now he's just a sore loser.
Let's all vote democrat since we don't have much of a choice due to lack of local support for JW last time. Look how they run the city of Augusta and what a great job they have done the last 2 years running congress. Nancy P. stood up and said she would change the $2.00 per gallon gas since the Dems were in control. We have to give her credit she kept her promise, gas is no longer $2.00 per gallon.
fleming appears to be a sleezy meglomaniac that will stoop to anything to gain his power. what a disgusting low life. i guess i will send broun some money monday.
Those of you who did not get out and vote for Jim Whitehead in the run-off have no one to blame but yourselves. It's embarrassing to have a moron like Paul Broun representing us in Congress. We missed out on having a classy and honorable man like Jim Whitehead in Washington. I don't trust Flemming eitherm. He has his own skeletons from what I hear. I will not be casting a vote for either of these iditiots in the 10th CD primary. Question: why is no one asking why "Dr." Paul Broun is not allowed to practice medicine inside any hospital in Georgia? He does't make house-calls only out of the goodness of his heart.
This blog demonstrates the tragedy of modern day politics. No decent person is willing to run. So, we get these guys. The clock is ticking on our government and, therefore, our way of life. If we don't get some decent folks in Congress, the system will fail sooner or later.
I think that the information in today's paper is necessary for me to make an informed descision about the candidates. After reading this, I researched Broun, also finding in the Athens paper in May of 2007 that Broun was practicing medicine without a liscense. Why have we not heard any of this from the media? It seems that it should be up to our "award winning journalism" in the Augusta Chronicle to research these issues and REPORT the truth on Congressman Paul Broun. I would like to know why he "only" makes house calls. Thank you, Mr. Fleming, for bringing this to the forefront. Now, Augusta Chronicle, look into it and tell us the rest of the story. Fleming has my vote!!!!!
RE: gcap's "If we don't get some decent folks in Congress, the system will fail sooner or later." Don't look now (most Americans aren't looking at anything other than the boob tube) but "the system" has already failed and the Republic is in a precipitous, irreversible decline. It is irreversible because to question: "Are you ignorant or just indifferent?" -- most American's would respond --- "I don't know and I don't care." ---- "Politicians are like bad horsemen who are so preoccupied with staying in the saddle that they can't bother about where they go." (Joseph Schumpeter)
I was basically undecided until this article. Sadly enough Barry Fleming doesn't come across as a very likable guy. Mr. Fleming's mannerism suggests to me he's a snob. It seems to me Columbia County could have picked a better candidate. Such mud slinging doesn't seat well with me. In fact, it's pathetic for someone who wants to hold such a high position to push this kind of garbage. Trust me, I'd prefer the winner of this race come from Columbia County; however, I'll vote for Broun until we can come up with a better candidate.
We need to make an informed decision who will better 10th District, and more importantly, the USA. I was very much conflicted in the begining of this race. I liked Congressman Broun's voting records since he was elected to U.S. Congress during a special election in 2007. I also liked Rep. Fleming's legislative records at State House. A good friend told me that I should look at Congressman Broun's reelection bid as if an employer is making a decision either to fire or keep an employee based on his performance. Did Paul Broun need to be fired for the job he has done since his election? Absolutely not. Not only that I think he deserves to keep his job, I would promote him if I could. In my opinion, he is one of the best in current Congress.
It saddens me to see Barry Fleming doing irreparable damage to his reputation by his never ending negative attacks against Congressman Broun. He distorts Congressman's records. I think everybody expects a little white lies here and there or bend facts a little to gain political advanges by politicians. Barry Fleming and his supporters are setting a whole new standards in bending facts. After witnessing how low he is willing to stoop to get elected, he has forever lost my support for any elected office. I would not vote for him to be a dog catcher.
This lawyer Fleming is once again proving my point about him. He knows Paul Broun will not get in the gutter with him. So he gets these mealy mouthed lap dogs with no spine of their own to publish info that is NO MORE DAMAGING to ones personality that can be found in most others life history. Look closely at Congressman Brouns voting record and how he stands up for Christian values. One need only know that speaker Pelosi and the other marxist democrats despise him and have TARGETED him for defeat. You can tell a lot about a man by his enemies. This IS EXACTLY WHY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY IS HEADED FOR DEFEAT. Boys like this impotent Fleming - feeling they need to prove their masculinity in the political arena to make up for obvious weakness in character (among other traits). He is aided by insatiably greedy country club republicans who have given the marxist both cannon fodder and legitimacy in the American political landscape. This is a sad day indeed...
gcap: There are plenty of decent and highly qualified people that would be willing to run for public office. The problem for many is the vetting process. Most people have a skeleton or two in the closet that can go back 30 years or more. They or their family don't want to have to drag them out or defend them to an an opponent in full public view. The compensation may also be a problem compared to the extra expenses they must incur. Try renting an apartment in Georgetown while maintaining a residence in GA. A financially independent and lily-white candidate would the most likely to succeed but a one time question such as "When did you stop beating your wife?" could do him in.
Well, this column, along with Barry Fleming's mud-slinging, has convinced me that Broun is the one I would vote for. You had to go that far back to dig up a $467 shortfall in alimony? Good grief. I don't think Broun has a thing to worry about over this column or Barry Fleming.
It was Fleming who criticized Charlie Norwood in 1996 any way...when he was a democrat. Fleming seems to only want to talk about Broun's past. I hear nothing about issues.

Tom, it is RINO (Republican in name only). Mud slinging ain't good politics, especially amongst Republicans. Leave that crap to the DIMs. Either one though is better than a DIM.
Several years ago Columbia County held public meetings regarding the Storm Water Utility fee. Tempers flared, both from the citizens who opposed the fee, and the County Commissioners. With just a few exceptions, cooler heads prevailed, and no one stayed mad at each other.
There were two notable exceptions, one on the part of a gentleman who sued the county, and the other on Barry Fleming's part. While the other Commissioners politely listened to the problems from the electorate, Mr Fleming was defensive about every concern he heard. I do not recall his smiling a single time during the several meetings that were held.
I do not know Mr. Fleming personally, but I believe that we would be better served by someone who is polite enough to at least consider the issues of someone with whom he does not agree. Paul Broun gets my vote.
