Memorial to be held for slain Sam's Club manager

A candlelight memorial service to remember David Holt will be held tonight.

Mr. Holt was kidnapped and killed on Father's Day in 1998 after an armed robbery of the Sam's Club on Bobby Jones Expressway, where he was the manager. Authorities found Mr. Holt in North Augusta, locked inside the trunk of his car, which had been set on fire.

Three men -- Carlston W. Coleman, Ronald Coleman Jr. and David J. Easterling -- were convicted of Mr. Holt's kidnapping and armed robbery. They were never tried for the killing.

The memorial service for Mr. Holt is scheduled to begin at 9:30 p.m. in the Sam's Club parking lot. The public is invited.

Downtown areas lose electricity in storms

Scattered power outages occurred around downtown Augusta after severe weather moved through the area Sunday afternoon.

Georgia Power Co. said 19 customers were not receiving power from the 15th Street substation as of 6:15 p.m. Power breakers react to severe weather and outages are to be expected, a spokeswoman said Sunday.

The National Weather Service in West Columbia, S.C., issued a severe thunderstorm warning for northern Richmond County and western Aiken County at 1:26 p.m. Nickel-size hail was reported in Augusta at 1:55 p.m., according to meteorologist Bruce Cherry.

Man's body is found in Edgefield County

Sheriff's deputies found the body of a 60-year-old man in Edgefield County on Sunday afternoon.

The body was found at 166 Courtney Road in Trenton. Cpl. Robbie Harter of the Edgefield County sheriff's department said the incident was being investigated as a homicide and an autopsy was scheduled for this morning.

Trenton Police Chief Albert Tanks identified the man as Raymond Merriweather.

Two men arrested in several car break-ins

North Augusta Public Safety officers arrested two men in connection with a string of car break-ins in and around the Hammond Hill Villas neighborhood.

Gary Tolle, 18, and Dustin Nance, 19, who were arrested Saturday, are accused of breaking into several unlocked vehicles in the area and stealing items that included a set of golf clubs, a stereo system and a briefcase, according to police reports. Police recovered the property.

The men were traveling in a stolen Toyota pickup truck registered in Pennsylvania when they were arrested, according to police reports.

How does one "Break" into an unlocked vehicle? No one deserves to be stolen from, but I darn sure don't feel sorry for someone who doesn't take any precautions to avoid it happening to them.

I remember that Sam's Club robery, kidnaping and murder very well. It was a very shocking tragedy. Why were the thugs never charged with the killing?

This is one of my pet peeves, too, Double D. I watched an insurance man leave his sports car running near the mailbox of a house on Glenn Hills drive, with the car's driver side door wide open, while he took pictures of the house in the front and even the back yard. I kept an eye on the car from inside a house as a young man came walking down the road. He sure was giving that car a covetous look. That was a crime of opportunity about to happen if I ever saw one. You don't want to think people will do such things, but you shouldn't tempt fate. There are too many desperate and/or evil people around.

Double D, if someone walks into your house and you don't have any idea as to whom it is, wouldn't you consider that as a break in or burglary?

smartguy62

Wow I cannot belive that you guys feel that way. No one has the right to take anything that does not belong to them. If I leave my door unlocked no one should bother my car or the items inside.

I worked with David Holt for several years and I am wondering why they were not charged with his murder. David Holt was a wonderful person and has been missed greatly. To me the place was never the same to work at.

The defendants were never tried for the murder because Mr. Holt was killed in South Carolina. Danny Craig and the Augusta DA's office zealously pursued the prosecution of these thugs in Richmond County for those offenses for which they had jurisdiction. But after the defendants were convicted and received life sentences, the South Carolina Solicitor decided it wasn't worth his time or resources to actually prosecute the murder. Sounds pretty lame, right? Bear in mind this is the same guy who said, "I wish we could put up a big sign at the state line that says, 'Don't bring your bodies into South Carolina,'" shortly after Tamara Dunstan's body was discovered in a shallow grave in Edgefield County.

I won't blame the victim of theft. Think about all the things that are unsecured that belong to you. Your mail isn't secured unless you use a P.O. box. Does that mean that it's ok for someone to just take it? Your A/C unit sits outside and is basically unsecured. Is it fair game too? Tree's, flowers, lawn ornaments, are they all up for grabs as well? Come on ya'll , put the blame where it belongs, ON THE LOW LIFE THIEF!!! This mentality is a big part of why we can't sleep with our doors and windows unlocked anymore. Rather than put the sole blame on the dirt bag that takes what they have no right to, we try to push blame onto the victim. It's BS. Thieves should be horse whipped in public. That might change some minds and make this "I'll take what I want" generation rethink their position and work ethic.
