Why doesn't popular vote matter?

  • Follow Letters

This letter is to underscore what Joe Nirenberg said in his letter ("Why vote if the delegates sew it up?" June 11).

Why vote if the presidential candidate who got the most popular votes does not get the nomination? Sen. Hillary Clinton got the most votes, but likely will not get the nomination. Explain this.

If that is the law, it should be changed. That is not justice to the voters -- more than 100 million of us.

Primary rules are determined by each political party, not by law. If you don't like the rules, lobby the party leaders for a change.

Justice!! Like my granpappy said: "If you want to git screwed go to the cort house, if you want justice go to the ho house." Granpappy was a smart man. They must not read on-line this question has been addressed ad nauseum.

Little Lamb

Ms. McCorkle, you asked a good question. There is a surprising answer at the following web page: http://www.anncoulter.com/cgi-local/article.cgi?article=255

Well...the Primaries are the responsibility of the Parties. The Dems put the "Super Delegates" in action following the Hilarious failure when they elected McGovern. Yes they indeed saw that their constituents were too stupid to elect a good candidate. The Electoral College is in effect becuase this is NOT A DEMOCRACY...it is a R-E-P-U-B-L-I-C. Ms. McCorkle try retaking 7th Grade Civics.

Heck, why not just vote nationwide, all in one pot. No states, no delegates, just two candidates going against each other. Look at all the fun we could have if we needed a re-ccount. I wonder how many years it would take for the winner to finally take office. Utter tripe!

I4PUTT

Actually the delegates don't count that much either...just follow the money...the one who raises the most in campaign contributions generally wins. Hopefully Mrs. McCorkle is not allowed to vote. One's knowledge of how our government works should be an absolute minimum requirement before voting.

I like the idea of the winner Prez and loser Vice Prez-seems a better balance of power.

Oh MY... and we wonder why this country is so messed up. If you did not bother to pay attention in school or if your school was just plain falling short in teaching then a responsible citizen would take the time to learn how the system works. Please going to the ballot box and checking a block is not doing you or anyone else justice. I realize that we maybe were not of the mindset to understand the importance when we were kids but there is not excuse now that we are grown. Educate it is never to late to learn and it is never to late to teach those you love the importance and the whole story unedited by political correctness. I have taught 1 older than 18 child his civic duty and working on my second she will be able to vote the first time in the general election this year. If I can do it then all you out there can at least GO FOR IT. Educate!

Even if popular vote mattered in the Democratic Primary, it is not clear who the real winner is. Clinton and her supporters like to claim she won the popular vote but every election tracker has that as the case only if the caucuses and four states that did not release their popular vote totals are excluded. Is that fair? Even when the totaly screwed up results from FL and MI are added, Obama comes out ahead. In the end, the Democratic Party had two exceptionally strong candidates that battled to the end in a virtual tie for the popular vote. The system has worked even with all of the nay-sayers in the media. And as a result, come November there will be a President Elect Obama.

mojo

ok I'm going to requote pt's post regarding the lte posted on the 11th, it says it all..."if you're under 40 years old, you probably didn't get any civics in high school and have very little idea how our form of government works. If you're under 30 you probably got a very distorted idea of American history. If you watch CNN for your news information, you definitely have received a very distorted view or reality. Almost any book having to do with the constitution and how it works will explain what a representative republic is. (knowledge can be such a burden)"

RichmondCountyResident1

Well said Sigraci, using fuzzy math to claim the popular vote lead, is a hollow victory, at best. Besides, it's time for Democrats to come together for the fall election. Let's get behind Obama and reclaim the White House. We can't afford four more years of the GOP. OBAMA 08 !!!!

jack

Yak1, you seem to be the one that needs to refresh your civics. The political parties, not federal law, governs how candidates are nominated. Yes, we are a republic, thus Presidents have been elected as President without the most votes in the general election -it's called the Electoral College.

RichmondCountyResident1

Hey Mojo, you forgot if you're over fifty, you're still living in the past. If you watch Fox news for imformation, shame on you. they are the biggest joke in twenty four hour news. Obama 08!!!

jack

BCG-which school failed to teach you the difference in too (meaning also) and to (as in going to some place or to be)?
Probably the same school that didn't teach McCorkle civics.

jack

Sigraci, God help us should Osama get elected. We will lose what you and your ilk whine most about Bush (Bush supposedly taking your freedoms) and turn this country into a government nanny state of Marxist socialism.

jack

RCR, I do watch Fox as I want real news reported as by the likes of Brit Hume, not biased BS such as that the Communist News Network (CNN), the Osama channel (NBC), et al. I'm sure you and your ilk are too ignorant to know the difference in news and opinion (Hannity has never claimed to be a journalist but does allow the left to express themselves through Colmes). Find me that on CNN, Nbc or any other MSM channel. McCain in 08 for a man that ain't an empty suit with empty promises.

RichmondCountyResident1

Jack, first of all, you need to grow up and stop calling people names. You can't make an intelligwent post, so you resort to namecalling. People like you, will no longer be allowed to hold this country back. We are a diverse nation and we are not going back. Fox, can tell all the lies about Obama they want, but come November the voters are going to elect him and the country and the world will be better for it. We can't afford four more years of the GOP. OBAMA 08!!!!!

Signal Always

Since when is diversity synonymous with Socialism? That seems to be what you're implying, RCR. That we're now a diverse nation and "we" can no longer hold you back. Barack Obama IS a Socialist. He's pimping Socialistic policies that will bring this country to her knees. Anyone with an ounce of intelligence can tell you that what he's proposing is nothing more than pandering points to the extreme left who cannot stand Capitalism. "The rich this", "The rich that". Hey, morons, punishing the rich has never and will never produce one more friggin' job. It will not put one dollar in your wallet. This country will not survive a Barack Obama presidency with a leftist Congress. The only reason we survived Carter was due to the fact that not all Democrats were blatant Socialists and members of the DSA as they are today.

Signal Always

Ann, if you're referring to what happened to Hillary, I suggest you take that up with the fools running the DNC. If you're talking about Presidential campaigns, I suggest you research the Virginia Plan and Connecticut Compromise. Without it, New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, and L.A. could determine the President without any help from any other state. I'll be damned if I ever see that happen and you will see another secession.

RichmondCountyResident1

Signal Always, you say we want survive an Obama presidency is lunacy. Bush and all his failures already has us on our knees. Save the conservative rich vs. poor crap. Americans like you, who won't benefit from the tax cuts, cry so the rich man can get richer. While at the same time screaming about poorer Americans having healthcare. That's why McCain is behind and will lose come November. You're brain washed by a failed philosophy. Taxes have been lowered, capital gains are low, why aren't they helping the economy now?

S.C. Dawg

RCR, I did not know that destroying the country and not holding the country back as you profess meant the same thing. I wonder who in the future will be called on to pull FAST EDDIE OBAMA out of the septic tank he will throw us all in if he is elected. Careful what you wish for. NOBAMA 57! VOTE MCCAIN!

Signal Always

Ok RCR, time to show us all how intelligent you are. Go ahead and list the economic failures brought about by George Walker Bush. I'll be waiting to strike every one of'em down. I can point out every plan by Barry Obama that will stop our economy dead in it's tracks. So, I call. Post'em. Post the economic failures of President Bush.

RichmondCountyResident1

S.C. Dawg, your time past about fifty something odd years ago. It's new day for this country, so you'd probably want to get in your time machine and go back to the ninetten forties and fifties. See ya. OBAMA 08!!!!

Signal Always

BTW, for anyone that wants to easily shut down a Liberal, we have a plethora of information that we've researched for that purpose. It's a little section of my board called "Political Ammunition". http://www.conservativecave.com/index.php/board,37.0.html

justthefacts

Signal, where did he go?

RichmondCountyResident1

Signal Always, where do we start. First his administration failed to regulate and anticipate the mortgage crisis. Now we are looking at bailing out 1 million bad loans. He failed to prop up the dollar, so we wouldn't be paying four dollars at the pump.Don't blame the Feds, the administration is ultimately in charge.Oil was $26 a barrel when he took office. We are approaching our six month of job loses. Next month will mark an official recession. He lied to get us into a war in Iraq, that has cost us over four thousand lives and approaching a trillion dollars with no end in sight. Added nearly two trillion worth of national debt on our future generations of Americans.

griesella

ohhhhh

OH MY, Oh MY! The dot-com bust in the early 2000's that hit Wall Street,(Before Bush btw) the attack on the Twin Towers, Katrina, the sorry state of N.O. levys, the people who were too dumb to know a scam when they saw one, (or didn't care, the big house, man!), the huge oil prices that are part of the global picture, this could take all day, so I will cut it short. ALL because of that big, bad,G W Bush.----- I can't believe that someone actually posts this trash.

niqhtraider

Wonder which one of the 57 states b0barack is really from?

niqhtraider

rcr, which party is pushing the mortagage bailout

rcr, Tell me again, what was that lie bush told to get us in the war? And what party is pushing for the mortage bailout, and uhm, how much was a barrel of oil when the dems took over congress. Please slap yourself, your broken record is stuck!
