Police officers launch July 4th campaign

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office started Operation Zero Tolerance on Friday.

Officers throughout the area will be on the lookout for speeders, seat-belt violators and drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

The program runs through July 6, with the aim of reducing the number of crashes, injuries and deaths during the July Fourth weekend.

Qualifying in Columbia County starts Monday

Qualifying for nonpartisan races in the Nov. 4 general election begins in Columbia County at 9 a.m. Monday and runs through noon Friday.

County school board posts in districts 1, 3 and 4, along with the chairman's position, will be on the ballot. Candidates can qualify at the Board of Elections, 500 Faircloth Drive, Building E, Evans.

There is a $315 fee to qualify for the chairman's post and a $195 fee to qualify for the district seats.

Four of the five seats are on the ballot this year because of a 2005 state law that combined two districts, redrew the school board lines to follow the county commission districts and turned the chairman's seat into an elected position.

Candidates also can qualify for five Superior Court judge seats at the secretary of state's office in Atlanta.

You want to stop crashes. How about those on CELL PHONE who do not pay attention, they run stop sign pull over and the whole time you are laying on the horn. And still act as though it is your fault because they where too buzy talking and not paying attention.

I have an idea for a big revenue builder for Richmond County; ticket all of the speeders on Belair Road between Wrightsboro Road and Jimmy Dyess Parkway. The county will enjoy a windfall of cash if this is done. Also, enforce the county noise ordinance as well. The bass coming from some of the vehicles can be heard from a mile away.

if rcso would allow all traffic violations to fall under those in place already in the county ordinances, they could reap the benefits more. as it is now, RC only gets a small % of fines because they use the state codes for violations.

Bear captured - at least they didn't kill it. Animal control is famous for that crap.
