Police feared the next victim in a string of three increasingly violent sexual assaults would not survive her attack.

Charles James was arrested early Friday on Morgan Road.

But their sense of urgency turned to relief early Friday with the arrest of Charles A. "Tony" James, who had been released from electronic monitoring by the Georgia Board of Pardons and Paroles on May 19 hours before the first attack.

"I think there was a lot of us here who thought the next victim would likely be a homicide victim," said sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles, a violent crimes investigator. He said the brief time between Mr. James' release and the first assault, and the escalating attacks, "only confirmed for us the sense of urgency we needed to have in this case."

Mr. James, 32, of the 2300 block of Cougar Drive in Hephzibah, is charged with aggravated battery, kidnapping, armed robbery and aggravated sodomy in the June 13 attack in which a woman was sodomized, slashed with a razor and left in a pool of blood in a parking lot off Mike Padgett Highway.

Mr. James is also suspected in two other assaults in Augusta's Harrisburg community, Lt. Peebles said. Both of those cases have been turned over to the district attorney's office for their consideration.

Those attacks took place May 19 and 21. In all three attacks, a woman said she had been walking late at night when a man in a truck offered a ride. The victims were then attacked, and the last two were raped.

Lt. Peebles said there was substantial blood evidence found in Mr. James' truck, but he wouldn't elaborate or comment on any other evidence investigators have obtained.

Scheree Lipscomb, a spokeswoman for Pardons and Paroles, said there has been no indication Mr. James was straying from the conditions of his parole. He completed job-readiness classes, worked as a painter, passed drug screenings and met regularly with his parole officer.

He was also involved in a class to change his behavior and decision-making, she said.

Mr. James was released from prison in February. He was sentenced in a purse-snatching case to 10 years in prison followed by 10 years' probation to run concurrently with an earlier 10-year sentence for a 1994 Richmond County robbery. Lt. Peebles said he doesn't appear to have a history of sexual violence.

Deputies arrested Mr. James as he was driving on Morgan Road at about 12:30 a.m. Friday. Deputy Scott Herring spotted a truck matching the description of the Chevrolet S-10 pickup victims had described.

Police said Mr. James matched victims' descriptions of a white man, 5 feet 10 inches tall, 160 to 200 pounds, with light brown or blond crew-cut hair.

Lt. Peebles is asking anyone with information on Mr. James or the assaults to contact the sheriff's office at (706) 821-1080. The sheriff's office also has a tip line at (866) 939-5050.

I would like to commend RCSO Deputies & Investigators for the vigilance and dedication put forth in catching the James subject. I also would like to express my gratitude and I'm sure the communities gratitude to Deputy Scott Herring for an outstanding job in spotting the subject's vehicle and initiating further contact in order for the arrest to be made. Furthermore, I would like to expand just for a second to enhance the situation. Deputy Herring is a well seasoned, expierienced, knowledgeable, dedicated deputy that still has the intestinal fortitude to perform his job to the utmost highest standards (along with many others). Not taking anything away from any deputy what so ever, but what are the chances of a fresh/fairly new deputy having the ability to make this critical contact with the James subject? To loose deputies like Scott to other L.E. Departments or for him to leave L.E all together is a tragedy to the community.

Continued from the above. RCSO and Richmond County Commissioners. PAY THEM OR LOOSE THEM. The passion for the job will last forever, the internal drive will diminish and fade when their families continue to suffer for lack of pay. Mine did. GREAT JOB SCOTT !!!!!!!, Yeah, I know that's all you will get out of it, besides your self gratification.

Maybe I am naive, but why would any sane woman get into a stranger's pick-up truck late at night in Harrisburg? Maybe these women were prostitutes, or maybe just stupid, but when the time is appropriate they need to speak up and possibly counsel other young women about the pitfalls of being overly trustful. I hope these three women regain their health soon, both physically and emotionally. It breaks my heart.

Thanks Richmond County for your great work now let's just hope and pray the justice system works for the good of the publics safety this time instead of pampering the criminal...This scum should not have been allowed out into society in the first place...

You can never trust anyone these days. I know I would not be walking that time of night and espically here in the Augusta area with all the crimes that go on. You have to watch who you get in the car with looks like the girl's parents would have taught them to not get into cars with strangers.

I, too, commend Deputy Herring. There are many officers who honestly have the drive and passion for what they do. It's in their blood. They have to do it. Therefore, I agree that if these honorable men and women are not financially taken care of (as in pay raises), eventually, we will lose many great officers. Whether it's in their blood or not, they have to be able to support their family. Again, I thank and appreciate every law enforcement officer who puts their lives on the line to help his fellow man-or woman :)

Lt.Peebles...one of the hardest working of Richmond County's finest. Great job!

Just My Opinion

One of the things that make this case so horrific and classifies this culprit as a true monster is what he did with the knife to his last victim. I have it from very good sources that James put his knife "where the sun doesn't shine" in his victim! He is a monster and a sick punk! I join you others in sending a very heartfelt thanks to all the officers involved in his capture. Now it's up to the judicial services to take care of business and put this piece of crap away for good!

Waymore

I too would like to commend the deputies involved in catching this animal. I would also like to add that the bulk of the people leaving RCSO are not doing so for the money. Money may be part of it, but it's not the biggest part of it.

jack

Try him, convict him and put his butt out of misery with the needle.

Waymore

This maggot is the reason why we need the electric chair! The needle is too humane!

TakeAstand

SC is running thier electric chair!!!!!!! Bring back the chair and the hard labor in prisons!!!!!!

bone

SC just used ol' sparky yesterday on James Earl Reed and he cooked up just fine. any chance some fuzzy legal dealings could convince GA to transfer mr. james to columbia so he could fry up over there rather than using my tax dollars to keep this inhuman dirtbag alive????

i.b.e.w..electric

sit him on top of a large fencepost ,nail his scrotum to it ,set his scrotum on fire ,and hand him a knife

popower

i guess he miss the prison so much he had to go back this time for a long time it shows he hated women and love the men he left behind in prison i see where he stayed with his mother in a beautiful moble home only a skum bag will chose prison over this this is another one of satan men he love his father the devil so much he said daddy the devil i want to come back home and the daddy devil said come on son devil i will get u 25 years is that enough for u yes daddy devil

please be kind

To just my opinion do you really find it necessary to give explicit details of the victims ordeal? I can only imagine it will be hard enough to deal with without everyone knowing exactly what happened. Specifics are not necessary.

RoxyFoxy

Some may not want to hear the specifics, but I believe it is important to know. Otherwise, people have a false sense of reality. The women almost bled to death because of what he did with this knife. Not only that, she will most likely not have a normal life after this. She is not only emotional, but physically scared for life!! My heart goes out to her and the others too. Hopefully she can apply mind of matter and make a complete recovery from this ordeal!

RoxyFoxy

Also, she was on the news recently talking about the situation. Therefore, everyone knowing what happened, it not an issue. This guy is a complete sicko freak!! Ugh...it pains me to know there are crazies like this out there. Especially being a woman myself. Ladies....please, please, please be careful and watch your back. Trust no one!!!

keepinitreal

If this is indeed the predator that was doing those horrible crimes, man, he was right in my area out on Morgan Rd. Sick fend has nothing better to do? I mean even if those were prostitues who got in the vehicle, what if it was a child or young lady. Yes they should know better and would have some fault but, he is really the sick one here, ok. What, he got his thrill from taking advantage of a female and then leaving them or at least one of them to die? He needs to become a permanent resident some where away from humans.

Great police work.....

rrr332

(Waymore) It's great to see the support that you and many others show and give to RCSO / other L.E Agencies. In most cases as with this one, Deputy Herring will get an "at-a-boy", an occasional "thank you", and hopefully a conviction for his excellant judgement call. That in it self will continue to motivate Scott for a while until the next good catch comes along, which Scott has had his fare share. As far as money not being the biggest part for the bulk of RCSO deputies leaving is a big understatement. I will agree that there other reasons that factor in, but you can bet that the deputies that leave, are not taking a job that pays less. When you put on paper, the pro's and con's side by side as an evaluation for the job that L.E.O. perform. You sit, look at yourself, your wife and kids. Then ask yourself, Why?, Why do I do this? Because I love the job, the brotherhood, well, somebody has to do it, why not me? Yeah that's the Pro's side. You fill in the Con's side and then actually live it. God Bless these women and be with them as they heal.

Just My Opinion

To "please be kind", if you reread my post, I was not explicit in that I implied to where he placed his knife. To be explicit, or to be perfectly clear and definitive, I would've said exactly where this monster impaled her! Do not split hairs on this issue because it is that type of sensitivity that have given people a false sense of security by not knowing exactly what these people are capable of. Of course I am totally sympathetic to the victim, those before her, and any of those who haven't yet come forward. I am also sympathetic to your sensitivity, but there is a time and a place for everything.

Itll be alright

Hope he don't drop the soap while showering!!!!!!!!!!!!

just another fine upstanding young white man

What type of class did he take because it obviously did not work for him.
