Inside or outside?

Barack Obama's biggest selling point is that he's new, fresh, different -- an outsider not subject to the same manipulative games of Beltway insiders.

If Sen. Barack Obama fancies himself as new and different, and a political outsider, what is he doing surrounding himself with such Clinton administration insiders as former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright?

He's reminded us many times.

Yet, his campaign's actions say something quite different.

For his vice presidential search committee, the Obama camp chose a Kennedy, a former Clinton adviser and a man whom The Washington Post called a "consummate Washington insider." The latter, Jim Johnson, is a former Fannie Mae chief executive who, it turns out, received a sweetheart mortgage from Countrywide Mortgage, which Obama himself has criticized lustily for its role in the subprime mortgage mess. Johnson had to resign almost before he started.

Meanwhile, former Bill Clinton advisers are flocking to the Obama campaign. "With former Secretaries of State Madeleine Albright and Warren Christopher and former Defense Secretary William Perry signing on to a panel already heavy with former Clinton officials, Obama continued to consolidate the support of Clinton loyalists," one news report said.

This is change?

Moreover, the cynicism and manipulation of Washington is showing itself in the Obama camp in unexpected ways.

The Obama campaign this week apologized for actually preventing two Muslim women with headscarves from sitting behind him at an event -- so they wouldn't be on television.

Commentators in the mainstream media immediately excused it and sympathized with him, citing a chronic misconception that he is a Muslim.

But that's not all.

ABC News reports that at a Michelle Obama event earlier this year, a student newspaper reporter overheard one Obama campaign worker say to another, "Get me more white people; we need more white people" -- obviously to jockey the racial mix in the sea of faces behind her.

And this week, handlers have attempted to repackage Mrs. Obama as a kinder, gentler first lady prospect, after many Americans found her comments about America to be more than a little off-putting.

All campaigns try to stage-manage as much as they can. That's not new.

But neither should a candidate who sells himself as a wholesale change artist engage in such insider shenanigans.

Blah, anyone is better than your hero, George W., or his apologist, McCain.....you're grasping at straws.

Don't dare criticize Obama!

christian134

To all who continue to heap blessings and goodwill on the shoulders of Obama and his cronies are going to wake up one day in quicksand....Then friends it will be too late, way too late...This man and those around him are consummate liars while he and his wife are racist lying muslim tied characters, in my opinion....:-)

christian134 - Don't sugar coat it, tell us how you really feel! ;-)

I hope our country is strong enough to overcome BO if he is elected. I'm not saying GB is or has been great but BO will not lead us back to greatness. I'm one of those that will vote for JM since I think he's the lesser of the two evils.

Bizarro

Washington is incapable of CHANGE by either candidate or party. I can't believe any of you are gullible enough to buy that. Of course the Rep are incompetent but that is not an argument to excuse the Dem incompetence. Is this just going to be cycles of bringing in Dem-getting screwed, then bringing in Rep-getting screwed, ad infinitum. I bet they all get behind closed doors and laugh how stupid the voters are and how much they have gained from their position. "Ha,Ha,Ha Guys this is like taking candy from a baby. There should be a law against it." Then have a good ole Fashion Dean Martin like roast picking on each other. All at the cost of the tax payer. Why not give them the keys to your house. If your strategy is to pick the lesser of the two, then just think about that for awhile. I'm writing in Bizarro for President. Bizarro is better qualified than Pat Paulsen and arguably he is almost as funny.

:-) I am trying my level best PTHS...:-)

barack hussein obama is an IL politician that has done nothing to correct the problems in IL and now wants people to believe that he is going to solve all the problems of the country. oh-bama a uniter - no way.

sjgraci

I'll have to break out my Legionnaire's cap when Obama's in town. Maybe they'll put me on TV like the McSame camp does. Veterans for Obama 'O8!

bone

Bizarro08. we need a slogan - CHANGE has already been beaten to death.

jack

Grouse, I haven't heard McCain apologize for anything Bush has done. Source please. As for Osama, change ain't always good.

jack

Veterans for another highly decorated vet-McCain in 08! I'm sure vets will vote for OSama's plan to disarm America unilaterally.

At least McCain will be loyal to our country. I would trust him to protect our interests over Obama. Any man that could endure what he did, can "Serve and Protect" our interests here and abroad. Do I think he is the best candidate, not necessarly, but I know what I am getting. And for all the Bush bashers, neither candidate is running against Bush, they are running against each other. Bush has nothing to do with this election, he is finishing his last term.

NANF

Obama is so connected to the corruption that is in Illinois poitics that he knows exactly how to manipulate the beltway boys to the max. He will drag all the Illinois trash right in to DC. You think the government is in trouble now, just see what happens if BO is elected. The biggest downward spin of crap and corruption this nation has ever seen. Look in to how he's connected to the under the table dealer type Illinois politicos God Bless us all.

grouse

Wow, Jack, you said a mouthful there. You're right. McCain hasn't apologized for Bush - which he should. Perhaps you should look up the definition of apologist. I would like see some of the sources for all the wild accusations thrown at Obama in this forum.

karmakills123

Boy you guys are going to get it !!! How dare you racist pigs say lil bo's name with out bowing down and waving your arms and wailing praise the Lord !!! Racist all of you!!! Racist I tell ya :~p

RichmondCountyResident1

Sorry crybabies, the latest Newsweek poll has Obama fifteen percentage points ahead of McCain. I don't think nobody's listening to your spin.Scare tactics, want do you any good. OBAMA 08!!! Hey Christian, that was sick, dude. And you call yourself a Christian?

bone

not that i am a fan of mccain, but we all know better than to trust early polls, don't we, rcr? i seem to recall hillary as virtually unbeatable several months ago. regardless, after obama and mccain are finished slinging mud on each other, i think we'll all want to vote for someone else. christian, i don't see how obama's possible affiliation with a religion other than christianity should have any bearing on his ability to govern. remember when kennedy was being knocked because he was catholic? religious persecution by those who claim to be religious has just got to end someday; why not follow the teachings of your savior and avoid casting stones or gossiping?

convertedsoutherner

Dims talk about our "do nothing president of the past 7 years" but are willing to put a do nothing senator from the politically corrupt city of chicago in the office of president of the united states and follow him off the cliff. Have these "followers" even looked at his record, the political machine of IL and the corrupt and also politically connected people he has on his election team and also his close acquaintences. This would be an eye opener for most intelligent and informed people. For someone that wants change, he has certainly connected himself with a lot of the past.

RichmondCountyResident1

Bone, first I want commend you for speaking out against religious bigotry. Christian and others are condemninig all Muslims for the acts of a few. As far as the poll, yeah it's early, but it cannot be overlooked. You keep saying you're not a McCain fan, but it's clear you want be voting for Obama. You reluctantly support McCain, while not debating his stances.

christian134

Yep I do Richmondcounty I most assurdly do....Good afternoon to you too RCR....:-)

bone

i'm sort of in a "my gut tells me" phase of developing a political opinion, rcr. while i can't believe all the good or bad about either candidate, i don't believe that obama can effectively deal with either domestic issues or foreign policy matters as well as mccain. that said, i can't vote for mccain if he is considering extending the deployments in iraq as a means to win a war/establish democracy: those crazies really do need a dictator to keep them in line. so, i'm stuck: i don't believe obama is the man for the job, but i can't vote for mccain if he is fool enough to continue the shenanigans in the middle east.

Dan White

RCR - looks like your man is going to win unless he makes a major gaffe. Our choice comes down to the left leaning Democrat, Obama, and the right leaning Democrat, McCain. There is not a true conservative Republican in the hunt. I've thought a lot about how our country would be if Obama gets it, and you know, whether a Dem or Rep is in power, my life hasn't really changed that much no matter who is in power. I do know that the lives and families of 4,000 brave troops killed in this war started by Bush have changed forever. Yea, gas is $4 a gallon. I blame Congress for that. For the first time since 1999, we are not going on vacation. But oh well, there's no place like home. That's a minor change in our lives thanks to politics, but nothing major no matter who is in charge.

christian134

You keep questioning my Christianity, RCR, all the while you should examine your own backyard before jumping into mine...I believe the way I believe and speak with some civility while you and others throw out the names as much as you please...We will never agree so we might as well do as we please and say what we please but come to a truce on each others Christianity...I don't believe I have ever called you out on your beliefs for if I have I apologize....:-)

Bizarro

Thanks for the support Bone. I nominate you my VP. I'm willing to select an odd and diverse cabinet from posters here. I like diversity and compromise will make for some interesting mix. Our platform will be "STRANGE", because we will be honest, have integrity, not sell our soul for polical gain, explain things so a dog could understand it, offer a U.S. debate on foregn policy and where it should go rather than a dictatorship, and make Congress and govt accountable just like citizens are to govt. Now that is strange, eh???

bone

STRANGE - more like, UNHEARD OF. i think the media would have to revolt against us, though; they prefer slight-of-hand and smoke-and-mirrors politics rather than what we'd offer. interesting idea regarding more citizen involvement in foreign policy decisions: the overall isolationist mindset of the u.s. citizenry is completely at odds with the gov't these days.

jack

Grouse, here's one example of what has been said about Osama with his own mouth: http://www.macsmind.com/wordpress/2008/02/27/obama-plans-to-disarm-america There is no more a corrupt DIMocRAT stonghold than Ilinois, especially Chicago from whence he got started.

I suppose his friendship with Ayers the terrorist, Wright the Racist, et al are all made up, right? Not when you hear their crap from them in person.

jack

Bone, isolationism after WW I got us into WW II. AFTER Hitler over ran Europe and Japan the Pacific. How many hundreds of thousands of American lives dd tht cost us?

sunnysmiles11

bizarro, you have my vote.. can I be on your cabinet?

sunnysmiles11

RCR, I don't think all people are lumping muslims with muslim extremists.. at least I'm not.. I know some muslim people who are very nice people - my concern is with the extremists that subscribe to Muhammed's revised Qu'ran - the one where all the infidels (those who do not worship Allah and are not Muslim) are to be murdered even if it takes using their own children as bait to sacrafice..
