Teacher, minister gets 25 years in porn case

ALEXANDRIA, VA. --- A teacher and minister from South Carolina has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for transmitting child pornography and attempting to entice a person he thought was a 13-year-old boy for sex.

Timothy Lynn Brumit, 48, of Aiken, admitted Wednesday he sent more than 600 pieces of child pornography via the Internet to a person he thought was a teenage boy, but was actually an undercover officer from Dumfries, Va.

Mr. Brumit tried to convince the boy to meet him in South Carolina for sex.

At the time of Mr. Brumit's arrest in January, he was an English teacher at Batesburg-Leesville High School.

He also served as a minister in various South Carolina churches.

The 25-year term was in line with federal sentencing guidelines and higher than the 15-year term requested by the defense.

USC officials suggest 6 percent tuition hike

COLUMBIA --- University of South Carolina administrators are recommending a tuition increase of nearly 6 percent for the coming school year.

The administration recommended Wednesday a 5.9 percent increase, from $8,346 to $8,838.

USC President Andrew Sorensen says the school is confronting rising costs, noting a $1 million increase in its utility bill.

Nonresident undergraduates would see tuition increase from $21,632 to $22,094 in the fall.

The budget will be considered by the full board June 27.
