A glimmer of enforcement

  • Follow Editorials

"It is the policy of the executive branch to enforce fully the immigration laws of the United States, including the detection and removal of illegal aliens and the imposition of legal sanctions against employers that hire illegal aliens."

-- President George Bush, in an executive order

Has an alien -- uh, the space kind -- taken over our president's body?

When the illegal immigration crisis finally got the nation's attention -- after illegals took to American streets with Mexican flags in hand to demand recognition and rights -- the argument was made that there was nothing else we could do.

There's no way you can deport 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens, the argument went.

Of course, it was a ruse all along. It's not necessary to actively deport most illegal aliens in order to get them to leave.

You don't even need the "comprehensive" immigration "reform" pushed on us by both parties for two years, at least until they felt the brunt of Americans' anger at the idea of amnesty.

No, all you have to do is enforce existing laws -- something the Bush administration has been inexplicably loath to do.

Now, however, President Bush has signed an executive order requiring federal contractors to verify workers' residency status.

The federal "E-verify" system was established under President Clinton, but has been voluntary until now.

Could it be the federal government is waking up to its responsibility to enforce its own laws?

What next? A secure border?

Maybe. But don't hold your breath -- especially since this is an election year, and Democratic nominee Barack Obama seems to think the illegal immigration problem is just that you're racist and irrationally fearful. Nor has John McCain been right on illegal immigration; he was one of the main sponsors of amnesty. And both parties will step lightly around the issue in an election year.

We don't know why the lame duck president finally got religion, but it's about time.

The U.S. is being played for a sucker on illegal immigration anyway, but how block-headed would it be for the government itself to be employing illegals -- which, despite rhetoric from the left, is against the law?

"This is the first time the federal government is ensuring that it will not be responsible, directly or indirectly, for hiring illegal aliens," says Rosemary Jenks, director of government relations for true reform advocate organization NumbersUSA.

Given the feds' chronic inaction on illegal immigration, an increasing number of states have passed their own laws requiring employers to check workers for immigration status.

They've been trying to enforce the laws the federal government was supposed to be enforcing.

It's nice to see the feds at least making a token effort to catch up.

The reason Huckabee is

The reason Huckabee is calling on republicans to stop smearing Obama and focus on the issues is all the smearing does is win more votes for Obama.

Rose, just what makes you

Rose, just what makes you think Carter had anything to do with the cease fire? I heard on the news that over 700 Palestinins vs 7 Israelis were killed during the fighting. Ya' think that might have something to do with it? I see your head is still where the sun don't shine.

nightsriders look at the

nightsriders look at the facts. Carter was talking with Hamas, and what were people saying about him? They called him a traitor and a dummy. They said he was stupid for talking with Hamas. Now what has happened? Israel and Hamas have agreed to a 6 month cease fire. What does that say? I say Carter helped, and you can't stand it because you were wrong.

Paywhat youowe, you don't

Paywhat youowe, you don't have to be wealthy to invest a little money into a 401K, CD, or mutual fund. Those wealthy folks who invest do so to produce more wealth with which to produce more goods and services and provide more jobs. Simple economics. Class envy is out of the old DIMocRAT game book and has been for ages.

Illegals will continue to

Illegals will continue to infiltrate the country, with no fear of deportment. Policticians will continue to tell us what we want to hear to get elected- then when they're in office do whatever the hell THEY want. All the while the richer get richer and the poor stay poor. Pretty soon, Americans will look for places to become Illegal Aliens themselves. I've been looking for my own private island! :)

Rose, your "truth" about

Rose, your "truth" about Carter's having anything to do with the Hamas-Israel cease fire is only in that vacuum between your ears. He couldn't get our hostages released when President of the mighties nation on earth, so why would anyone think he could manage a cease fire now with the main sponosrs of HAMAS/terrorism (Iran) as a feeble minded old fart?

The facts speak for

The facts speak for themselves. People hollered traitor Carter. He talked with Hamas and now they have a cease fire with Israel, and nobody is talking about that. Are you so dumb you can't figure out that maybe Carter did help? You are blind to the facts.

jack, carter refused to sell

jack, carter refused to sell weapons to iran to use against iraq.reagan's people had no such conscience and sold them tow missles, and who knows where they ended up.this is how the hostages were released precisely during the inauguration.it was done to make jellybean brains look like a hero. a real hero who read louis l'amour westerns while carter has written 23 books,as such people read his books.reagan was barely literate as is buffoon bush who will never write a book if his life depended on it.

Remember Carter sent those

Remember Carter sent those what was it, Delta forces? he sent them to rescue the hostages, and it was leaked out. Now who was head of the CIA? Daddy Bush.Reagan was being sworn in as the hostages were being released. Reagan was not to blame. He was used. Reagan had his faults, but he was a very good President.I believe Daddy Bush did not want the hostages released while Carter was President. There are some crooked people in Washington.

Carter was not talking to

Carter was not talking to Hamas as a representative of our country. He talked to them on a personal level. If he helped, it does not require him to be there for the signing. Now if you still want to know more, then go to the Carter Center near Atlanta on a day Carter is there, and you can ask him your question.

Any wagers how long the cease

Any wagers how long the cease fire will last? 6 months-now that is humorous!!!!!! Anyone brave enough to take the 6 month spot. How about one month? We can get a pool going and maybe one of us can at least win a few bucks out of this deal. When Carter visited Hamas they were discounting all he said he'd accomplished before his plane landed on U.S. soil. Why would anyone presume that Carter influenced this in the least?? When the Israeli's and Hamas laud Carter for his powerful influence and bringing them to the table, then you may have an argument. He will earn another Nobel Peace prize. Carter has no influence with Israel-in fact they would not even offer him protection his last visit because of misstatements made in one of his books. Hamas played him like a violin. He has done some great work-I'm not knocking him, but just this ain't it.

Why is there no one defending

Why is there no one defending the garbage being aired about McCain? Did you see the "baby Alec" ad done of the Dems when they have admitted McCain didn't say he would keep the war going for 100 years. They know better, yet they use a lie. The anti- McCain commercials are by far the worst I have ever seen.

Rose....have you ever heard

Rose....have you ever heard of "post hoc ergo propter hoc"? It describes perfectly your logic break down that Carter was the reason for the cease fire. I find it humerous that you will argue politics all day untill someone confronts you with facts, then you come back with "I'm not going to argue politics with anyone." You consider anything bad about Obama as being a smear....even when it's just his own words. I sincerely believe you could see a video of Obama eating babies and you would still vote for him. That's how stuck on stupid you have become.
