A glimmer of enforcement

  • Follow Editorials

"It is the policy of the executive branch to enforce fully the immigration laws of the United States, including the detection and removal of illegal aliens and the imposition of legal sanctions against employers that hire illegal aliens."

-- President George Bush, in an executive order

Has an alien -- uh, the space kind -- taken over our president's body?

When the illegal immigration crisis finally got the nation's attention -- after illegals took to American streets with Mexican flags in hand to demand recognition and rights -- the argument was made that there was nothing else we could do.

There's no way you can deport 12 million to 20 million illegal aliens, the argument went.

Of course, it was a ruse all along. It's not necessary to actively deport most illegal aliens in order to get them to leave.

You don't even need the "comprehensive" immigration "reform" pushed on us by both parties for two years, at least until they felt the brunt of Americans' anger at the idea of amnesty.

No, all you have to do is enforce existing laws -- something the Bush administration has been inexplicably loath to do.

Now, however, President Bush has signed an executive order requiring federal contractors to verify workers' residency status.

The federal "E-verify" system was established under President Clinton, but has been voluntary until now.

Could it be the federal government is waking up to its responsibility to enforce its own laws?

What next? A secure border?

Maybe. But don't hold your breath -- especially since this is an election year, and Democratic nominee Barack Obama seems to think the illegal immigration problem is just that you're racist and irrationally fearful. Nor has John McCain been right on illegal immigration; he was one of the main sponsors of amnesty. And both parties will step lightly around the issue in an election year.

We don't know why the lame duck president finally got religion, but it's about time.

The U.S. is being played for a sucker on illegal immigration anyway, but how block-headed would it be for the government itself to be employing illegals -- which, despite rhetoric from the left, is against the law?

"This is the first time the federal government is ensuring that it will not be responsible, directly or indirectly, for hiring illegal aliens," says Rosemary Jenks, director of government relations for true reform advocate organization NumbersUSA.

Given the feds' chronic inaction on illegal immigration, an increasing number of states have passed their own laws requiring employers to check workers for immigration status.

They've been trying to enforce the laws the federal government was supposed to be enforcing.

It's nice to see the feds at least making a token effort to catch up.

What is the point of the

What is the point of the editorial Chronicle? Of course the government has for decades and decades allowed this country to fall into decline on every issue from allowing companies to sell out to the nations around the world because of cheaper better labor and production of products to illegals taking what few jobs are left by working for next to nothing or working without benefits, etc. This list is growing by the day....What is the point again I ask and what are the answers? I will give all a simple solution...Ask God for forgiveness and repent of our immoral ways and in doing so send good men and women to take hold of this country. Not the type along the lines of extreme liberals or even those who claim to be conservative but do not allow their hearts to open to God's laws but rather to the laws of greed and politically correct...This is simple and is a solution that will work if only......

Under the Chambliss amnesty

Under the Chambliss amnesty program there will be no illegals. Just Spanish as a 1st language. The $60,000,000,000 wasted on Saxby's special interest farm bill could have closed our borders. A vote for Saxby is a vote for open borders.

Can the AC please give an example that supports it's claim that Obama feels this is a racist and irrational fear? It's this kind of demonization that Mike Huckabee is begging the right-wing not to do. However, a leopard cannot change it's spots, especially when it's full of hate.

I'd say the lame duck president got "religion" on immigration crackdown because he doesn't have to worry about the Latino vote now.

Shivas, I too would like to

Shivas, I too would like to see AC's claim that Obama feels it's a racist and irrational fear. Especially since his plan on immigration is to create secure borders, improve our immigration system, remove incentives to enter illegally, bring people out of the shadows, and work with Mexico. (Sounds like a common sense approach.)

Christian, please cite rational examples of Sen. Obama's questionable character, racist and anti-American traits. And try to use verifiable sources. Not editorials or opinion pieces by your favorite right-wing pundits. Bet you a coke you can't.

TE, Exactly what the critics

TE, Exactly what the critics are saying about Obama, he says he will do this and that, but never explains HOW. Bringing the people out of the shadows is amnesty, "improve our immigration system" is so easy to say. How is he planning to secure the borders? What incentives are the illegals getting that he can remove? I hear him say all these things he "will" do, but not the details on how he plans to get it done..

Obama backs the immigration

Obama backs the immigration bill granting amnesty to those already in the country. He also would give a drivers license to illegals which most Americans are against. (he made this comment a few weeks ago and might have changed his position since that time.) He often "misspeaks" (as he calls it).

As long as people are tempted

As long as people are tempted with cheap labor they will not look at policing illegals as their responsibility. Even knowing it is wrong to hire them, companies will still do so as long as they can, because in their mind it makes good business sense. As we all know, "business ethics" is an oxymoron.

Obama is like every

Obama is like every politician before him: Say whatever you must to get that vote, then do whatever is in your own best interests if elected. Obama knows he cannot do what he promises, no man can. The sheep will elect him on his "Robin Hood" platform, then they will cry loudest when there are no more "rich 1%'ers" to tax. The richest 1% of our country pay over 40% of taxes and employ over 40% of our citizens. Thank Obama when you cannot get a job that pays more than minimum wage. Guess we'll all need assistance.

Odd isn't it. It has been decades since a Haitian set foot on U.S. soil, and even if they made it pass the Coast Guard they would be deported faster than their heads would spin. Seems capricious to apply federal law to one group and ignore the other-you could even say discriminatory.

How does pulling info from a right wing political pundit prove your point? Snopes.com has that email and comes to different conclusions than simply "Senator Obama you're a liar." Again, please cite valid sources, not your favorite pundits or an email forwarded to you via the usual suspects. No Green tea yet, Christian.

Actually tall, what you're

Actually tall, what you're saying only applies to income taxes, not total tax burden. The top 1% control about 38% of wealth but pay 34% of the total taxes (including capital gains, etc). Bush's tax plan raised the INCOME taxes of the wealthy but drastically lowered things like taxes on trust funds, capital gains, realization of "capital loss" and phantom income, etc ...things only available to the upper end of tax payers and which 80-90% of taxpayers are not even aware of. I myself recently bumbled into this income bracket and was shocked when my friendly neighborhood tax advisor explained all this to me. I thought he was a crook and looked it up in the tax code only to find it true. Obviously, I intend to take everyting I can get my hands on. I would be a fool not to. More obviously, you would be a fool to let me earn more income by not working than working. If you find yourself a fool, keep voting the way you have been. Your betters appreciate it.

There is no credible proof to be found. It is really very hard to find proof without doing your own research. The media is more interested in opinion and controversy, so that is what you find online for the most part. Controversial opinions that get people like us to argue with each other instead of focusing on real issues. If somebody want's to criticize Obama's economic ideas, fine. That is a real issue that I think he does not have my best interests in mind. At least during the campaign. When the election is over, who knows what happens.

Dani - in regard to the failed immigration bill, Obama did support a system that would allow illegals who are in good standing to pay a fine, learn English and go to the back of the line for the opportunity to become citizens. How do you propose we ship the est. 12 million back to their country of origin?
For further clarification of his plan and his record on the issue go to:

barack hussein obama is said

barack hussein obama is said to be the most liberal senator( moreso than kennedy). He is from the liberal, politically corrupt city of chicago. His followers say he has experience due to his being in office in IL. (1) The state of IL is billions of dollars out of balance. (2) They are trying to impeach the dem governor blagojevich due to his activities. (3) IL roads are horrendous. (4) IL economy is in the tank. (5) IL child support divisions are a disaster and no compliance used to make required parent to pay child support. (6) IL corrupt, political dem daly administration/machine in chicago, taking money from other areas of the state of IL. (7) oh-bama backed by many who include the corrupt IL political machine. (8) oh-bama connected to many IL politicians, businessmen (rezko), that have been supporting him, who have been indicted and jailed. (9) IL politicians, including senator oh-bama, have done nothing to help residents of IL. (10) What is oh-bama going to do for the country, when he's done nothing for the state of IL? Remind you of a former president from GA?

This may be the dumbest "logic" yet... by your example. On John McCain's watch, oil prices quadrupled, Osama Bin Laden is free and laughing at us, California is allowing gay marriage, the housing market is in the crapper and all this can be traced back to McCain. I recommend you vote for Bob Barr.

Pay - Good explanation of the bush tax cuts. People just listen to the one-liners of the evils of taxes, not realizing, bush's tax cuts were predominately for the wealthy. Another example is the estate tax, the 2009 exemption level will rise to $3.5 million ($7 mil for a couple). At this level, only 3 of every 1000 people who die will have an estate large enough to owe any tax.
