Marshal killed in 1794 honored with marker

A ceremony to dedicate a historical marker in honor of the first U.S. marshal killed in the line of duty will be held next week in Augusta.

The ceremony will be at 2 p.m. June 25 at Saint Paul's Episcopal Church on Reynolds Street.

Robert Forsyth was the first federal law enforcement officer killed in the line of duty on Jan. 11, 1794, in Augusta.

Burn patient's condition upgraded to serious

The condition of a patient who was injured at a paper mill explosion in Redwood, Miss., last month, was upgraded from critical to serious Monday night, according to a news release from the Joseph M. Still Burn Center at Doctors Hospital.

Three other employees who were also burned in an International Paper boiler explosion on May 3, remained hospitalized and in critical condition at the Augusta-bases burn center, according to center spokesperson, Beth Fritts.

No other details about the explosion was available Monday night.

SRS event to feature informational booths

Washington Savannah River Co. will conduct the 12th annual safety "family night" from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the University of South Carolina Aiken's Business and Education Building gymnasium.

The event will feature more than 40 informational and interactive exhibits presented by Savannah River Site contractors, area hospitals, businesses and organizations.

June 24 is cutoff for judgeship nominations

The process to fill the Superior Court judgeship being vacated by Judge Duncan D. Wheale's resignation has begun.

The Judicial Nominating Commission will accept nominations until June 24. Interviews will be scheduled with candidates on July 21, and the commission will prepare a short list for Gov. Sonny Perdue's consideration. The governor will decide who will fill Judge Wheale's four-year term, which ends in 2010.
