Police seek man in violent assaults

  • Follow Metro

Three increasingly violent assaults in recent weeks might be the work of one man, police said Monday.

Authorities think the suspect in three recent assaults is driving this truck, which is likely a dark-colored early 1990s Chevrolet S-10. The attacker has been described as a white man in his 20s, 5-foot-10 and 160-200 pounds, with light brown or blond hair, in a crew-cut style. Special

In the latest attack, a woman walking along Old Savannah Road on Friday night was stopped by a man in a dark truck who offered her a ride, according to Richmond County sheriff's Lt. Scott Peebles.

The man drove her to a business on the 2400 block of Mike Padgett Highway, forced her to remove her clothes, robbed her and sodomized her.

The man slashed her with a razor blade before leaving her naked and bleeding in the parking lot, according to an investigative file on the attack. A security guard found her in a pool of blood and called police, the report said.

The woman described her attacker as a white man in his 20s, 5-foot-10 and 160-200 pounds, with light brown or blond hair, in a crew-cut style. He also had a small tattoo on his arm.

The same man is suspected in two similar attacks in May, Lt. Peebles said.

"It concerns us obviously because this guy is very violent," he said. "We've got to catch him. He's going to end up killing somebody."

In the two most recent attacks, the assailant kept the victim's clothes, police said.

Based on surveillance video from a business parking lot where Friday's attack took place, Lt. Peebles said the man is likely driving an early 1990s Chevrolet S-10. The truck could be painted either black over gray or dark green over gray. It has tan interior, and the passenger's seat could be blood-stained.

In the May assaults, a man with a similar description driving a similar truck offered rides to women who were also walking alone late at night.

On May 19, a 26-year-old woman was walking about 11 p.m. on Broad Street near the Crawford Avenue intersection when a man offered her a ride. He drove her to the end of Goodrich Street Extension, where he attempted to rape her.

"When the victim resisted, the suspect physically assaulted her by punching her in the face," Lt. Peebles said. "The victim was able to scream and get out of the suspect's truck, at which time a passerby, hearing the screams, assisted the victim."

Another assault occurred near the same location and at about the same time on May 21.

A 29-year-old woman accepted a ride near the intersection of Greene and Eve streets.

The man took her to the end of Goodrich Street Extension, where he forcibly sodomized her. He wielded a knife and punched the woman in the face during that assault, according to a report.

Never take rides from strangers, especially at night!!!!!!!!!!

christian134

Ladies please stay off the streets after dark and never never get into a strangers vehicle....Never...

peonynut

This guy is going to graduate to murder pretty soon. Sorry the women were hurt but how stupid can you be.

DoubleD

I'm a 190lb man and even I wouldn't walk down Old Savannah Rd. at night! Now that I think of it, I'm glad I don't drive an S10. There are many horrible things in life that could happen to me and being forcefully sodomized is at the bottom of the list. I just cannot imagine anything more horrible than that.

curly123053

People are so dumb to accept rides with strangers in ANY neighborhood. Women should know to be more cautious you would think.

ANGEL

I really feel sorry for the ladies for what has happened to them and I hope and pray they can get thru this in time. I also hope and pray this ANIMAL gets caught soon before someone gets killed or someone kills him first by beating him and cutting up his private parts. My heart goes out to the ladies and I will continue to pray for them. Accepting rides from strangers is not the route to go anymore and again your own family and friends can do the same thing to you as a stranger can and also this can be done at bright daylight not just at night. With the day and time as it is right now, it is hard to trust anyone. Everyone please be safe out there.

DoubleD

I'm beginning to wonder to myself: It takes a whole lot of movement to take off your shoes, pants, panties, shirt, bra, etc. If this is being done in town, how hard is it to move your hand to the door handle and run away? This makes me wonder if there was some other business transaction taking place...prostitution. Why else would a woman in her right mind be walking alone in a trashy neighborhood at night, accept a ride from a stranger, not once think of jumping out at a light or stop sign when she realized he was taking her somewhere else besides her requested destination, then get completely naked before making any attempt to get away?

stillamazed

I was wondering about the postitution thing myself although that is not an excuse for this type of violence. this guy needs to be gotten off the streets for sure. He will only get worse if not caught and who knows, if this is prostitutes there may be more attacks not reported.........

DoubleD

Don't get me wrong, I'd like to see him castrated.

christian134

Double D I second the motion on that castration....

KarmaRules

who are you all kidding these are hookers and they reap what they sew. The news always covers up these hookers like the stories woman robbed at a motel room, yeah right. Maybe now the police will try and get them off our streets. They put their selves out there for even the crazy people to use them. ITs their own fault.

griesella

I hope that after he is caught he is hung some place accessible to public viewing. We all could then see one of the many faces of true evil.

WHATDIDIDO

What an idiot. You sound like the type that would blame the victim because they were dressed a certain way. Hopefully this will never happen to you or a family member or friend. Your attitude is why a lot of victims will not come forward because of fear of being victimized again.

griesella

The victims certainly were not using good judgement whatever the reason for accepting a ride. We don't know if they were looking for a ride or offered a ride by chance. Either way, people HAVE to be more careful. That guy is still out there looking for the next gullible person.

Go_Pro

SERIOUSLY?! are you blaming the victims? who cares what they were doing. IF they were committing a crime it was a crime fueled by drug addiction or simply as a way to make money...HOWEVER, this guy is committing a crime which is perverse and violent. There is a huge difference, believe it or not. Take him off the streets, quit blaming the victims. It is societies job to protect the weakest members of our people- children, women and the elderly. Were you raised in a barn?

DoubleD

I would never say someone deserves or asks for this type of thing to happen to them, but most 6 year olds know not to ride with a stranger. I'm sure they are blaming themselves for being so stupid, but it is what it is: they are partially responsible for placing themselves in a position where they were vulnerable to attack by a crazy man. There are things I'd do and not do as a man, because I know I would be jeopardizing my own safety. If I chose to ignore my instinct and roll the dice hoping for snake eyes and get bitten, then I'd be responsible first for taking the first steps to to the edge of the cliff. They have victimized themselves to a certain extent by being so darned careless.

intheknow

Go Pro, to some people these got what they deserved. What these twisted thinking people fail to realize is that this punk will not stop until he is turned in by someone who know him and believe me someone out there, knows who he is. Otherwise, only death will stop him. So some of you go on joking and believing that only the so called strret walkers and druggies are targeted.

christian134

yes-sir-amen stuff happens friend....Might not be right for the women but there are many reasons for their actions...To say it is their fault and they deserve what happens to them is "trash talk"..You have no idea what these woman have gone through or how they have been used and abused...I suppose the "men" and I use that term loosely are the poor victimized individuals who just couldn't get away from the wiles of the hookers....Your rational is just sick thinking...Of course prostitution is wrong as well as solicitation of prostitution but to say the prostitute deserved what she reaped is warped thinking...

griesella

Go PRO, you are correct of course, but how can society protect women if they insist on walking alone on deserted streets and accepting rides from strangers. The only thing society can do is warn women against self-destructive acts and pray that the raper is found and taken off the streets.

opal

This is just the kind of attitude that makes it easier for this pig of a criminal to get away with this. He knows the vics will be blamed. No matter what a womans profession what he has done is horrible and wrong. Bet you would not be blaming the woman if it was your mother, sister or wife.

karmakills123

"SERIOUSLY?! are you blaming the victims? who cares what they were doing. IF they were committing a crime it was a crime fueled by drug addiction or simply as a way to make money"....... HUH???Does that make it any less a crime????? This argument could be compared to the muscian who was killed because he was in the act of committing a crime in a BAD area.Shooting a guy in the head is also perverse and yes perhaps a little violent.

Go_Pro

Society can prevent this from happening by protecting and nurturing its youth. Both male and female. I assume that this pervert is a product of a perverted home. This young man was probably sexually assaulted, sodomized, perhaps his mother was a prostitute and now he acts out his repressed youth on women out alone at night, or, in the alternative, he's just plain crazy.

DoubleD

Only one person here blamed the women and called them prostitues. I said that is something that could be plausible. I should've put more emphasis on using this story to take the opportunity to warn your children about talking to or riding with strangers.

DoubleD

With technology this guy could've found the alternative and got online to find a woman that is into role playing and likes freaky rough and degrading stuff. With the internet you can find someone for any of your deviant needs.

BarstoolDreamer

If my mother, sister or wife was a prostitute I would tell them to pay their pimp or this can happen.

intheknow

Oh, I guess that was supposed to be some kind of a sick joke.

InChristLove

Opal you hit the nail on the head. No one knows for sure if these women were prostitutes or what reason they were walking down these streets. As for the poster that asked why they didn't jump out of the vehicle. Put yourself in their situation, they are scared out of their mind, the suspect has a knife threatening you with it....you'd probably do what he asked. We can speculate all we want about what the victim should or should not have done but the bottom line is this suspect is a violent criminal and hopefully will be stopped before he rapes again or kills someone.

lovingthesouth72

This prostitution/rape issue has a solution: respect for self and respect for others. Women: have some self respect and don't go out selling yourselves like worthless pieces of property. Men: respect women and treat them with the dignity they deserve. Society has so perverted the worth and dignity of the human person. Sad.

PRAYING

This young man obviously has some unresolved issues that force his to act out in this manner. I recently watched a movie titiled "The Capture of the Green River Killer". It was based on a true story. The serial killer in this movie felt compelled to kill his victims(all prostitutes) after having sex with them. He killed over seventy women over a period of about twenty years. He said it was easy to get them into his truck because "he didn't look like he would hurt them and they trusted him". Did they deserve this? No! Sin is sin, and as we pray for the victims we have to pray for the victimizer.

griesella

It didn't take an incident of this nature for us to know that are bad people in the world. WE ALL have to be more cautious. Most of us would never dream of getting in a car with a stranger no matter how he appears. Don't hold these women completely blameless. Instead use it as a warning to those who COULD be the next victims.
