Graduation cheers lead to 7 arrests

  • Follow Metro

COLUMBIA --- When Rock Hill school officials tell commencement crowds to hold their applause until the end, they mean it -- police arrested seven people after they were accused of loud cheering during the ceremonies.

Six people at Fort Mill High School's graduation were charged Saturday and a seventh at the graduation for York Comprehensive High School was charged Friday with disorderly conduct, authorities said.

Police said the seven yelled after students' names were called.

Rock Hill police began patrolling commencements several years ago at the request of school districts who complained of increasing disruption.

All the cases, except for one that includes a resisting arrest charge, will be handled in city court and are punishable by a maximum of 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine.

That is the stupidest thing I have ever heard of. Its a once in a lifetime event. Let them enjoy it.

pofwe

All black, what you think HYPO?

pofwe

Who is enjoying it? Civilized people should ACT civilized!

nightraider

Way to go Rock Hill officials. Too bad RC can't take a leson from you on this!

pantherluvcik

pofwe you're an idiot and your statement shows you're not civilized, so what's your excuse??? Police should spend more of their time picking up stupid people like yourself and let these families enjoy graduation.

FrankRizzo

I have to agree with myop. There has to be better thing for the Police to do than arrest people who cheer. What is next arresting people for singing out of tune and too loud at church. Give me a break!!!!!!!!!

FrankRizzo

pantherluvcik, pofwe is obviously a person who has 16 years of education, he went to high school twice, and graduated second in the class of two.

hope i don't have my intelligence attacked for saying this, but i appreciate the attempt to bring a more dignified air to graduation ceremonies. many years ago when i graduated high school, i can recall some scattered cheering / applause, but nothing that would attract attention or distract from the performance. it seems that the desire to attract attention to oneself or cause so much commotion that the ceremony is interrupted has become the norm at many graduation ceremonies. i agree with pofwe's 2nd comment: if graduation is in part marking a person's transition to the adult world, civilized behavior should be encouraged. sorry it has to come to this, but there should be a separate area with a screen set up for people that just can't control themselves so they can watch the broadcast and not disrupt the solemnity of the occasion.

nightraider

Hey all you Perry Masons, they were not arrested for clapping. They were arrested for disrupting the ceremony after being told to hold applause to the end. Is that too hard for some of you to comprehend?

karmakills123

you do not like the sound of these posts?? It is going to get worse ....The PC crowd is gonna remove the gloves and speak the truth !! So get ready !!!!

WHATDIDIDO

Who are these people that you cannot take out of the jungle. All they have done is made criminals out of otherwise law abiding citizens. STUPID.

WHATDIDIDO

POFWE, what I believe is that everytime you and people like Karmakill post, you prove my point for me. You are both too stupid to even worry about.

Safe at Home

I am glad they were arrested. It is not a "good time" for the people arround them who have to suffer through all that yelling just because their kid finally graduated. Some people don't know how to act in public. If you want to act like you are in the jungle then go out in the woods and whoop and holler all you want but when you come back around civilized people act like you can respect other folks. You say you want "respect" but you don't give any to other people.

shivas

These are the important issues the right-wing concerns itself with. Something that can demonize people and allow them to stereotype. It's their cup of tea, and they relish the opportunity.

TakeAstand

Well put nightraider. I for one am glad they did something like this. They should do it at more graduations. Maybe the disrespectful jerks can get the message. I have seen it, they were so loud with thier woot woots, dog calls, and cheering and someone even had an air horn. This isn't a ball game inconsiderate jerks. My graduation was so disrupted from these people that people were not hearing thier names to come on stage, they had to keep calling over and over, and the crowd would not stop when asked. They had to go get some grads from thier seats because there was no communication because of the noise level. Some people just have no home training, manners, or respect. And they didnt make criminals out of otherwise law abiding citizens... they are trying to enforce respect and manners to these idiots that they did not recieve at home. It's the concept of tooo much thats its disruptive most people dont comprehend and you are selfish or ignorant to how bad these kids are if you think its acceptable.

There must be so little crime in Rock Hill that the police have to create some. I didn't think I had a constitutional right to sit in silence at a graduation ceremony, but I guess the Rock Hill police think so. I say, let the hooligans demonstrate their lack of class and home training. Let them holler! Free the Rock Hill 7!

426Hemi

Next thing you know, they'll be arrested for sneezing, or pickin' a nose! The kids are supposed, by law, to wear seatbelts, and not talk on cell phones, etc., etc., so why should their antics be any different at this ceremony? I'd call it jubilence! Kids will be kids! Where was the warning poster of threatened arrest if one yelled out? I'm sure the police have MUCH better things to do, unless the county is that hard-up for cash!

weekapaug05

It's disrespectful to the other graduates and the graduates’ families to scream, cheer, holler, and blow air horns during the ceremony. Of course it's a time to celebrate but just wait until after the ceremony. When you're cheering and yelling the other parents can't hear their son or daughter's name called. It's disrespectful. My cousin is from Rock Hill and graduated from N. Western H.S. and when we went to his graduation 10 years ago they made the same comment, if you clap, cheer, scream, or disrupt the ceremony in any way that you would be removed by an officer of the law. How hard is it to follow directions and keep your emotions to yourself until the proper moment to applaud what a great job your child and their classmates have done? Have a little respect for those around you and yourself. And no the police don't have anything better to do because they are on duty at any graduation ceremony and are paid to be there to keep the peace and keep disrespectful people in line so that everyone can enjoy their family member's special day. Wouldn't you be upset if you're son/daughter's name could not be heard when they walk across the stage because some other family was causing a ruckus? You can yell and scream all you want afterwards, so just show some self restraint and discipline and be respectful to the other people that want to enjoy graduation for what it’s supposed to be: a reverent celebration of a great accomplishment.

PRAYING

I am an educator and have seen a lot of children come through school that don't even get to walk across the stage for one reason or the other. I recently had two nephews to graduate and yes, I YELLED. I was not disrespectful in my yelling. That doesn't make me uncivilized nor anyone else that is overjoyed that a young person has made it through high school and expresses it by yelling out their name. As far as the jungle goes, you can keep those type of comments to yourself, have you ever had anything to celebrate? If so do it in the way that pleases you and let others have that same priviledge. I agree that the police should have more important things to focus on and so should the Rock Hill School District.. I wonder how their district is fairing in their graduation rates and their system as a whole. It seems that they were trying to prove a point and all that was proven is that their focus is wrong.

casualobserver99

Tell the Rock Hill police they are welcome to come work at our movie theater...same problem

TakeAstand

Amen to that casualobserver!! Thats why I never go anymore.

TakeAstand

Evidently all these people defending the inconsiderate people at these graduations have been fortunate enough to not have had animals at thiers and have no clue what we are talking about or are just as bad. PRAYING did you yell for 5 straight minutes after he was called and continue through 5 more grads?? Or did you give your applaud while he was accepting then drop it for the next one. Being a teacher I would hope you would be respectful. No need for 10 minutes of woot woots and other stuff so other grads can't hear thier names or they have to keep stalling becuase they are drowning out the mic??? There is a huge difference. Be greatful if you have no experienced such a sideshow, but don't minimize the disruption people are telling you first hand they have witnessed if you don't know about it.

griesella

ALL graduates deserve the same consideration. When the idiots scream and yell, some families can't hear their child's name called at all. It's easy to see who is civilized from those that are uncivilized just by reading comments by people who try to defend this indefensible behavior. These graduating seniors should be shown respect, they earned it, they deserve it. They do not deserve the boorish behavior of bad mannered loud mouths.

js_ee

Some of you really don't know what you want, huh?!?! You complain about the parents not caring and not being there for their children, BUT when they show an exaggerated amount of joy by cheering for their child's accomplishment, YOU want them arrested. Please make up your mind...do you want them involved or not. Maybe they should tell the administrators to slow down a bit and stop acting like a tape recorder when the names are read. Why punish the excited few b/c some are too 'civilized' to publically show their children just how happy they are for them. Waste of time and taxpayer's money if you ask me!

tararae763

Shivas, you spew nothing but nonsense, but I have grown to expect nothing less from your posts.

mommie2

It's a graduation for goodness sakes! Your child made it! Yell up a storm and stop when they are off the stage! Don't use an airhorn or something silly like that! Make your child know that you are proud. Don't worry about those sitting next to you that are too uptight to yell for their family members. This has been going on a while now. And they graduated, not out selling drugs or whatever. I think we should get over it.

CoastalDawg

Absolutely insanity on the part of the school board (do they even HAVE that authority under the las?) and the police. If there is a disruption, escort the people from the ceremony if necessary but what's the point? That individual's disruption is over and done once their child or grandchild has passed. The PEOPLE of Rock Hill need to bombard their representatives, the ones who made that special ordinance if there is one that covers "disruption of graduation ceremonies". I agree that the ceremony should be a little bit more "solemn" but have you seen some shenanigans that have been shown on TV this summer from graduations around the country, including the President and a graduate of a military academy doing a chest bump? Classic and that student will have a lifetime memory of that moment. All of those arrested for calling out a name or whatever should demand jury trials and have the local public defender represent them. Freedom in our country is becoming more and more limited each day. I've been to graduation ceremonies where obnoxious people make sounds when their loved one crosses the stage but I never even considered that to be a crime. How absurd! Big life moment ruined

toldya

I rang a cow bell- my only son graduated- I'll take the charge of disorderly conduct for that.

nightraider

Costa, I usually agree with your posts but not this one. While a student is departing the stage, the next student is approaching the stage and his/her name is called. With all the whooping and hollering and crap, many names are not heard in the hubub. Everybody deserves the same courtesy, therefore, the reason for no clapping or yapping until all names are called and all students issued their diploma.
