Hundreds of fish found dead in private pond
MABELTON, GA. --- The state is investigating a mysterious substance that apparently killed hundreds of fish in a private pond over Memorial Day weekend.
Cobb County fire spokesman Lt. Dan Dupree says the department contacted the state Department of Natural Resources after getting a call from Claude Beaver on Sunday about his pond. Lt. Dupree said the nearly 2-acre pond was covered in a strange film and hundreds of bream, carp and bass were dead.
He said officials don't know what the substance is but are sure it isn't dangerous to the public or the nearby Chattahoochee River. Investigators are looking into a possible link between the deaths and two tanker trucks sitting upstream from the pond, Lt. Dupree said.
Cost-of-living increase for retirees is vetoed
COLUMBIA --- Gov. Mark Sanford has vetoed a bill that would have given a cost-of-living adjustment to the state's retirees.
In a veto message issued Monday, Mr. Sanford said the bill was flawed and that lawmakers have not made sure the 2 percent cost-of-living increase for retired regular state employees, judges and police officers can be paid for.
Mr. Sanford says lawmakers should first reform the retirement system by closing the defined benefit retirement plan to new participants and moving back retirement eligibility to 30 years from its current 28 years.
Supporters of the measure say the plan's financial consultants have agreed with the method used to pay for the increase.
Boy plummets to death at North Carolina park
CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- A 2-year-old South Carolina boy was killed over the weekend when he pulled away from his mother's hand and fell about 100 feet off a cliff at a North Carolina state park, officials said.
Giovani Chavez, of Spartanburg, ran under a boardwalk railing and fell Saturday at Chimney Rock State Park, state parks spokesman Charlie Peek told The Charlotte Observer .
"She was on the dangerous side of the trail," Mr. Peek said of the mother. "She was holding her child's hand, and that's exactly what we would recommend: Just watch them every minute and hold on to them every minute."
It took about 90 minutes to get to the boy, who was pronounced dead at a hospital, authorities said.
Trail maps at the park advise parents not to bring small children on the Skyline Trail because of the steep cliffs.

My prayers are with the family. You have to literally put these 1-3 year old on a leash to make sure they don't dart away, they are so quick. I have a 2 year old and if I blink he's gone, but they just want to play. You gotta be extra careful with them they don't know danger yet.
This tragedy has torn at my heart...My sympathies and prayers to the mom and the family in this time of loss..May God bring comfort and solace in your time of sorrow...
I've been to Chimney Rock many times, I've climbed it many times, as child, as a teenager, as an adult responsible for children. You have to watch the kids, keep them in front of you all the time and, if they're young enough, keep a hand on them the whole time. Maybe they need better warnings there, or maybe they need to have responsible adults sign a statement saying they are responsible for minors. It's a safe climb and pretty hard to be negligent as it existed 10 years ago, but things could have changed....As I remember, the climb is just stairs up to a fenced in area, but that could have changed. Maybe someone has an updated climb?
