Man drowns during outing at area lake

  • Follow Metro

A Memorial Day family outing at Thurmond Lake turned tragic when a 27-year-old Beech Island man drowned.

Olvin Interiano was swimming at the West Dam Recreation at Thurmond Lake when his family lost track of him, said Harriett Garrison, the Columbia County Deputy Coroner. Mr. Interiano was apparently trying to reach a sandbar just after noon Monday, Ms. Garrison said.

His body was recovered about an hour later. There were no signs of trauma and no evidence of alcohol use, Ms. Garrison said. An autopsy will be conducted today.

I think the advice is "don't

I think the advice is "don't swim alone". With no trauma or alcohol use, the cause was probably something as simple as a cramp or exhaustion. A swimming buddy would have saved him from either. The younger you learn to swim, the less likely this tragedy is to happen.

My profound sympathies and

My profound sympathies and prayers going out to the family for their loss...I, for one, believe in life jackets for people of all ages...It may not be a great fashion statement but it saves lives...The best of swimmers often have problems...Summer is here folks please take care of yourselves and your families and friends...Wear a life jacket and lets all find out way back here for the fall and winter of our lives....Be careful....

Patricia, C134 is trying to

Patricia, C134 is trying to be responsible. Just bc you can swim doesn't mean this can't happen to you! I think having a life jacket at the lake where you can't see the bottom in 5 feet of water is just smart!

I taught swining for 25

I taught swining for 25 years, the last 10 all I taught was lifesaving and adult beginners. This probably was exhaustion or a cramp as the distance to objects over water can be decieving.
He probably thought the sand bar was a lot closer than it realy was. Someone should have been watching everyone in the water. If you are not trained in Lifesaving techniques you can all ways try to throw something to a person in trouble, such as a float. Again a sad situation and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family.

How about rolling over on

How about rolling over on your back and floating. The cause of these types of drownings is panic. If you find yourself in this type of situation, do not panic. RIP

how is it ignorant exactly?

how is it ignorant exactly? are you telling me if he had known a man died just days before doing the exact same thing he was attempting , he would have still done it? if so, then he deserved what he got. i'm so sick of all you bleeding hearts that are clueless of the real world. i guess you can say any death is "tragic", but when it's completely avoidable, then it becomes stupidity. get a clue!

There is a difference between

There is a difference between busting a thug when they "break into your [filtered word]" and calling someone who drowned a moron. I'll bet you hang at the clubs and drink on your off time with your buddies, don't you? Then you probably either drive off or ride with someone who has been drinking, don't you? If you do, that means you are a moron...I know, you are a goody two-shoes who never does anything "stupid" or "moronic" to put your life in jeopardy, do you? Additionally, the article specifically states that alcohol was NOT a factor, and that is according to the coroner.

D2116 and Native Augustan

D2116 and Native Augustan have an important point. When you get into trouble, i.e. a cramp while swimming, don't panic. If you roll over on your back and float, the cramping will stop after a little while, and you won't drown! Apparently, this is not common knowledge, but it should be if you swim. Everyone should know this technique.
