Don't jump to conclusions with cellist

  • Follow Letters

When did it become everyone's duty to chime in on every issue and story in the paper and posted on the Internet?

After reading comments underneath Internet-posted articles about the unfortunate death of Augusta Symphony cellist David Reader, I found myself ill and disgusted. People were unloading outrageous opinions when police hadn't even formed any opinions.

I find that giving people a forum to express views on a subject matter that is very personal to those of us who worked with, and knew personally the type of individual that David really was, is irresponsible and unfortunate. Please, disallow people to write material that is insulting, uninformed and inappropriate before any information was released by the police. Shame on you, Augusta Chronicle!

Neil Casey, Columbia, S.C.

(The writer is assistant conductor of the Augusta Symphony.)

Nobody is holding a gun to your head and demanding you read these blogs...yanno?

PTHS2

I thought the "Deputies believe the shooting was drug related" in the initial story pretty much opened the door for the comments.

Neil, I'm sorry you lost a friend but ... come on, you must be grief-stricken to even insinuate that my freedom of speech or the freedom of the press should be encrouched upon. And too, police don't form opinions they provide evidence. Now go practice your tuba.

Craig Spinks

How 'bout practicing your manners, Maestro Casey?

patriciathomas

We all speak out in favor of our friends, Neil. Even to the point of ignoring the facts of the situation. It's human nature.

Sometimes we extend our sympathies and prayers to those in need Neil...sometimes...It is also has great therapeutic value minus the doctor's fee of course...:-)

shivas

In regards to your next to last sentence Mr. Casey, the entire AC would have to shut-down.

I'm sorry for your loss, Mr Casey, and I apologize for all of the idiots on here who are too cowardly to put their real names in front of their nasty, ignorant, comments about things that they have no business commenting on. You must understand, that for most of the posters on here, This is as good as it gets for them all day. They have no real life to speak of, and they have fun at other's expenses. If the subject matter in the story itself is not good enough for them, they just attack each other! They are truly WEB-NINJAS and COWARDS. It's easy to attack someone when you don't have to know the facts, or be held to account for your words.

steveo - let's see, nasty, ignorant comments, too cowardly to use real names, no life...glancing in the mirror this morning, are we?

3M3T1B

oh, and you're so witty too! The Heywood comment is just such an intelligent response. I don't think any of the regulars on here will every post again. They have met their match.

A 26 year old unarmed man gets murdered. Shot dead. He is called a drug addict, and it it said that he deserved it. Torture for his family because YALL got to stir the puddin' every day. The same people, stirring the pot, trying to one-up each other, for your own entertainment.

No_Longer_Amazed

Unarmed? He had a cello, didn't he? On second thoughts, it was so stupid to go to a 'drug' fight armed with only a cello .......

steveo

I get on here about once a week. I like to see what the brilliant people are saying. I can guess what ya'll are saying about a story before I even look at the comments.

keepinitreal

Mr. Casey, I for one know that some comments are stated just to push someone's button to get things going in different directions other than the actual subject, but, that does not mean that all of us posters are that way, at least mainly speaking for myself. I did make the comment about Mr. Reader may still be here if he had not went into the area. The statement I next read was that he wanted to purchase $10.00 worth of weed. Like I also stated, having lived in that complex yrs ago, I saw so much of that activity cause it has always been that type of area since I was a youngster. The Bottom so it's more called has been that way before I ever even thought about living down there and regreted that I did grow up there, but I did not let that make my way of life to continue being or living there as of now a days. I truly feel that maybe Mr. Reader did know and realize the possible consequences of the late night activity, or a least had some experience in this area and had no problems before with this ordeal, just the wrong person to deal with. The suspect really is a dangerous person from what the media states by his history and by all means should be dealt with.

steveo

I gotta go get busy. Try to say or do something positive today will ya!

Dark Lord

Look Mr. Conductor, We understand the feelings of personal attack towards David but the facts are what they are and David was doing what he did. It is not the way that you would like to remember him but how you remember him is up to you. Also the messages you read are just opinions. Factual opinions but still our personal thoughts and opinions. The AC has a tendency to print both the good and the bad. So, get used to it.

double_standard

Don't jump to conclusions. Tell me the last time the Augusta Symphony performed in East Boundary or did something positive in that neighborhood. Two wrongs don't make a right but we will state the obvious.

Web-Ninja ... I love it!

I'm with PTHS on this one. It was the police, who said this crime looks like a drug deal gone bad. We merely commented on the issue. But if anything I said, cause the family any more grief, then please accept my humblest apology. Many of us have been victimized by crime and we know it is a difficult time for the family and friends.

walk_american

Well if you "knew personally what type of person he was" then you knew he was into drugs and you should have warned him to stay out of that area. Better yet you should have been a better friend and did all you could to get him off drugs. While I regret the death of a promising young man, I have no sympathy for drug dealers or users. He should have had more sense. If you continue down the path of drugs then eventually you will get what you deserve.

jack

SteveO, I read these posts daily and don't remeber anyone sayng your friend was a drug addict. However, his presence in a drug dealing/infested area does cause most folks to think he was there tobuy. I believe thsat is a pretty rational assumption.

jack

Shivas, if the AC depended on you for any intelligent input, they woud indeed have to close down.

PLAYLIKETHUNDER4

well said, rcr, crime knows no color,no economic lines.it affects one and all .
this is a sad thing,we should resist the urge to weigh in with needless opinions...

Rob Pavey

so.....this guy is condemning The Augusta Chronicle for reporting on something he finds unpleasant, and for allowing folks to comment on the tragic murder of a young musician who ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. Shouldn't he be saying "shame on you" to the guys who killed the cellist and not to a newspaper that has gone to great lengths to shed more light on the situation, and on the past history of the felon believed responsible for this crime? As far as "disallowing people" to express their opinions, they already do that - in Beijing.

RichmondCountyResident1

Thanks Playlikethunder, you're right, we need to show more compassion and withhold judgement.
