Mario Roker gave a huge smile and a sigh after hearing his son's name called during the latest Make Kids Count drawing for 13- to 18-year-olds.

"I'm excited for him," Mr. Roker said, referring to his son Alex. "College is very expensive, so every bit will help."

Alex hasn't decided which college he wants to go to, but he has been thinking about his career choice.

"I'm thinking about being a lawyer," said the 15-year-old North Augustan.

Alex is one of eight children who advanced in the May 16 drawing at The Augusta Chronicle. All have won at least a $500 scholarship bond.

In the past five years, The Augusta Chronicle and its sponsors have distributed more than $395,800 in scholarship bonds to area children.

The following children also advanced: Antonio Carter, Hephzibah; Kyle Christie, Edgefield, S.C.; Sheryle Dickens, Augusta; Dinesia Hickson, Augusta; Brittany Jones, Hephzibah; James Perkins Jr., Augusta; and Joshua Whatley, Edgefield, S.C.

Sponsors for the contest are Partners in Achievement and Platt's Funeral Home.
