The front of Jefferson Elementary School smells like cinnamon and spice. Murals and seasonal decorations always adorn the walls, covering the cold cinder blocks.
The school's staff takes pride in creating an inviting atmosphere for parents and the community, and the school has finally been recognized for its efforts.
Jefferson Elementary was one of four area recipients of the South Carolina Department of Education's Red Carpet Award.
Schools receive a red carpet to place at the entrance as part of the award.
The other Aiken County schools recognized were J.D. Lever Elementary, A.L. Corbett Middle School and Silver Bluff High School.
Schools are judged on a variety of factors, including appearance, the way people were treated in person and over the telephone, and the information and programs available for families and visitors.
Principal Pam Hart, who came to Jefferson Elementary last summer, said she knew the school had what it takes to win the award.
"One of the first things I noticed was what a warm and receptive school this is," she said. "Parents and community members seem to like their school, so we were already a perfect fit for the red carpet award. We're good and we know it, so we thought, 'Let's get the award for it.' "
The school assembled committees to oversee each part of the application. Committees included parents, teachers and others from the community.
Dr. Beth Everitt, the superintendent of Aiken County schools, surprised the four schools Monday morning with red balloons and the good news.
Mrs. Hart said office personnel squealed with excitement and jumped around when they heard the news.
"I was just so excited," she said. "You just don't expect to win it your first year."
