Another shaken baby death. So many young people have that terrible combination of lack of self control and stupidity. Nothing brings it out like the selfishness of frustration.
Man sentenced to life in 2007 murder case
A jury deliberated several hours this week before convicting an Augusta man of murder.
After hearing the Richmond County Superior Court jury's verdict, the judge sentenced Richard Hatcher, 54, to life in prison, Assistant District Attorney Philip W. Catalano said Friday.
Mr. Hatcher was arrested after a May 5, 2007, argument with 56-year-old Joseph Brooks turned violent. Detectives said Mr. Hatcher hit the victim with a board after the two argued over money.
2 accused of stealing woman's purse at bank
The Aiken County Sheriff's Office arrested two North Augusta men Friday, charging them with robbing a woman of her purse in a Belvedere bank's parking lot.
Thomas M. Chambers, 23, and Matthew J. Chambers, 19, both of the 100 block of Palmetto Avenue, are charged with armed robbery and possession of a firearm during commission of a violent crime.
According to the sheriff's office, at about 1:30 p.m. the brothers walked up to the woman in her car outside Bank of America at 315 Edgefield Road.
They showed a handgun and demanded her purse, then ran into a neighborhood behind the bank, where one was arrested almost immediately, police say.
At about 3 p.m., the Aiken Bloodhound Tracking Team arrested the second man, and deputies recovered a handgun and the victim's money, authorities say.
Both men were being held at the Aiken County Detention Center.

Man is charged with shaking baby to death
A south Augusta man who was in the Richmond County jail Friday is charged in the death of a 2-month-old girl.
Shawn Jahamal Perdue, 27, of the 3500 block of Gardenbrook Drive, is charged with felony murder, said Richmond County sheriff's Investigator James Kelly.
Autopsy results appear to conclude that the child died from shaken baby syndrome, Investigator Kelly said.
The incident occurred Wednesday afternoon at Mr. Perdue's home, where he lives with the child's mother, police said.
Investigator Kelly said Mr. Perdue admitted to picking up and shaking the child "because she wouldn't stop crying."
Mr. Perdue is not the baby's biological father, Investigator Kelly said.
Tanker truck accident closes lanes on I-20
A tanker truck overturned early Friday on Interstate 20, spilling ammonia nitrate and forcing officials to close eastbound lanes for almost five hours.
The driver, Derrick Garber, 25, and two passengers, Carolyn Garber, 33, and Bradyen Garber, 5, all of Greenville, Tenn., were injured and taken by ambulances to Medical College of Georgia Hospital.
They were treated and released, a hospital spokeswoman said.
Some counties in area will get disaster aid
Some area counties are among those approved Friday for federal disaster aid because of tornadoes and severe thunderstorms that hit earlier this month.
President Bush approved aid Friday for Bibb, Carroll, Crawford, Douglas, Emanuel, Glynn, Jefferson, Jenkins, Johnson, Laurens, McIntosh, Treutlen, Twiggs and Wilkinson counties.
Jefferson, Jenkins and Emanuel are three of the 10 counties where residents can receive temporary housing and home repairs in addition to the federal funds that will help offset 75 percent of the debris removal and other initial emergency costs.
Gov. Sonny Perdue made the request May 16 after touring the areas and reviewing preliminary damage assessment figures.
Residents and business owners who are in Bibb, Carroll, Douglas, Emanuel, Jefferson, Jenkins, Johnson, Laurens, McIntosh and Twiggs counties who suffered losses can begin applying for assistance by registering online at www.fema.gov or by calling (800) 621-3362 or (800) 462-7585 for the hearing and speech impaired.
The numbers will operate from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Sunday.

Another shaken baby death. So many young people have that terrible combination of lack of self control and stupidity. Nothing brings it out like the selfishness of frustration.
have we chosen the wrong generation X, these young people these days need to skip a generation of child baring. we need to give them vasectomy, and remove there uterus to start a new generation
How did the brothers get caught? Their type of robbery is so easy and seldom are the culprits caught. These two are probably already out and snooping in the bushes around some ATM. People shoot to kill, PLEASE!
the story of the shaken baby is so sad.there are so many families that would love to adopt and raise a baby.the mother should be charged as well for leaving this precious child to be watched by such a heartless b****** how could anyone do anything to harm a child?people need to wake up and start caring for their children and quit leaving them with just anyone .a child doesn't ask to be born.you created it you should take care of it.if you don't know how then you shouldn't be making babies.if you don't want it there are families that can't have children who would gladly adopt it.
I agree rebelgirl, the mother should also be charged, but guess what, you left one out, the childs biological father should also be charged. He should have been there too. We are so quick to blame mother's when something bad happens to our children, what about the childrens biological fathers... they should also be blamed.
Glad the Chambers punks were caught. I hope they do hard time. Sorry cowards. I hope these punks and other like them run into the victim who defend themselves and put a bullet in them!!!!!!!
2 months old? A baby that young only cries if it's hungry, needs a change or is in pain. Did the idiot think shaking a baby like that would actully stop it from crying, short of killing it?
I saw an adult start to do that to a baby once, I shrieked and plunged at him to stop him and I did in time. I startled him so much he nearly dropped the baby out of cowardly fright. I told him that shaking could cause brain damage to the baby because their necks are very weak and he scoffed at me. He should know that, he used to be an EMT and a cop. Since he scoffed at me, I told him I was dead serious, if he ever picked up and did that to any child in my presence I would call the law on him and report not just that instance, but also this attempt and meanwhile that I would not likely ever trust him again with my children with his then attitude. I recently found out his father did the same thing to a pre-teen boy that had crossed his son, picked the boy up and started shaking him and was caught by the parents. That child's parents "encouraged" him to take his family and move or it was not going to be a good neighborhood for him anymore. I always wondered how much was violent bullying AND ignorance, or did he know how dangerous it was and did it anyway. When that family tried to tell me how to raise my children, believe me, I ignored them.
Single Parents need to take this seroius...most of the time Mothers invite danger into their homes. Becareful and wise who you allow with your children. It's better to be alone than be with the Wrong Man.
Ok, so the mother was a soldier at work correct? It's sad but the blame only can go on one person! The man that killed the baby! So she had what she thought was a responsible adult in her home to help care for her child. Was that being irresponsible? Some people try and defame an innocent person without even knowing what the hell was going on! If he was so bad, why didn't someone step in and help her out? What happened to it takes a village to raise a child! Don't be scared to help! We are supposed to help people who are in need and encourage them! Does anyone know about Kitty Genovise! People watched her get killed in daylight and nobody did a thing! Step in when people need help!
