AUGUSTA, Ga. - Jane Gould Bush Long, widow of the late Eugene Mitchell Long, passed into glory at her residence on Thursday morning, May 22, 2008. Born on April 8, 1920, she was 88 years old. A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church on Saturday, May 24 at 11:00 with interment at Summerville Cemetery with the Reverend Gerald P. Ragan officiating. Jane Long was a native and life-long resident of Augusta. She graduated from Mount Saint Joseph's Academy in Augusta and Sweetbriar College in Amherst, Virginia. She was also educated at the Sorbonne in Paris between 1938 and 1940. She was a life-long communicant of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church, and a devout Roman Catholic. She regularly volunteered in various civic and charitable organizations and was a founding member of the Augusta Assembly. She was a member of the St. Joseph's Hospital Ladies' Auxiliary for more than fifty years, and she was the recipient of their Good Samaritan Award. She also was a past member of the Junior League of Augusta, a past president of the Augusta Symphony Guild and was a member of the Colonial Dames. She had a love of the French language and was for many years a member of the French Club. She also was a regular contributor to the Southern Cross for many years. She was a member of the Augusta Country Club and the Pinnacle Club. Survivors include her four sons, Dr. Eugene Mitchell Long, Jr., John Bush Long, Dr. William G. Long, all of Augusta, and Hugh C. Long II of Philadelphia as well as three daughters-in-law, Benita Manning Long, Lisa Ireland Long, and Martha Garris Long, her 17 grandchildren, Jane Long Weatherred, Ann Marie Long Skinner, Eugene Mitchell Long III, Hugh Calvin Long III, John Ryd Bush Long, Iverson Bryans Long, Samuel Barrett Long, Owen Francis Long, Margaret Gregg Long, Catherine MacMurphy Long, Robert Gould Long, Sallie Martin Long, Alexander Crossley Long, Susannah Glascock Long, Sarah Gould Long, Caroline Grace Long, and Benjamin Montgomery Long, and one great-granddaughter, Mary deCottes Weatherred, plus numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was attended by Barbara Shorts and Mary Hall who honorably cared for her daily for the past two years. Friends may call at the residence of Mr. & Mrs. John B. Long, 2242 Pickens Road on Friday, May 23 between 5:00 o'clock and 7:00 o'clock in the evening. Elliott & Sons Funeral Home on Telfair Street is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, it is suggested that contributions be made to St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church or any one of the many organizations for which she regularly volunteered.
