SUMTER, S.C. - Ruth Lowder Thigpen, 85, widow of Coley L. Thigpen, died Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at a local nursing facility. Born in Clarendon County, she was a daughter of the late Adger B. Lowder and the late Hessie Jane Tobias Lowder. Mrs. Thigpen was a member of Grace Baptist Church. She was employed by Capitol Department Store and retired from Brody's Department Store. Survivors include two sons, Robert L. "Bobby" Thigpen (Andrea) of Sumter and Julian L. Thigpen (Eunice) of Aiken; a daughter, Marian Thigpen Edens of Hanahan; five grandchildren, Rodney Thigpen and Julie White, both of Aiken, Roland Thigpen of Raeford, N.C., Kim Weisner of Summerville, and Todd A. Edens of Mt. Pleasant; and four great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday in the Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Jim Chandler officiating. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Park Cemetery. Pallbearers will be grandsons: Rodney Thigpen, Steve White, Todd Edens, Roland Thigpen, Rodney Weisner, and John Waddell. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Elmore-Cannon-Stephens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Grace Baptist Church, 219 W. Calhoun Street, Sumter, SC 29150.
