AUGUSTA, Ga. - Mr. William H. Holmes Jr., beloved husband of Lieselotte K. Holmes, entered into rest Wednesday, May 21, 2008 at Charlie Norwood Veterans Memorial Center. MSG Holmes, U.S. Army retired, served in WWII, the Korean Conflict, and the Vietnam Conflict. He was awarded the Army of Occupation (Germany), European African middle Eastern Campaign Medal, WWII Victory Medal, National Defense Service Medal with one Oak Leaf Cluster, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star Medal, American Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with two bronze service stars, Vietnam Campaign Medal with device 1960, Expert (Rifle), Expert (Carbine), Expert (Pistol), Bronze Star Medal w/OLC; Army Commendation Medal and Good Conduct Medal (6th Award) NCO Academy, 1962, (Leadership). He was on the council of Ascension Lutheran Church; scoutmaster for Boy Scout Troup135 where he was awarded the Silver Beaver award. Funeral services will be held at Elliott Sons Funeral Home, Lumpkin Road Chapel, Saturday, May 24, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Michael Freed officiating. Burial will follow at Bellevue Memorial Gardens. Full military honors will be accorded by the military detachment at Ft. Gordon, Ga. Survivors include his wife Lieselotte; son William H. (Janet P.) Holmes, Graysville, MD; sisters Mary Jeffery, Shirley Ahrendson, Judy Simmons and Linda Varner; brothers James and Don Holmes; grandchildren Amanda Holmes and Kathryn Holmes. He is preceded in death by his sister Erhmal Jean Hennig and brothers Berkeley Holmes, Tim Holmes and Tom Holmes. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ascension Lutheran Church, 2860 Wells Drive, Augusta, Ga. 30906.
