Graffiti sparks investigation

The gang task force of the Richmond County Sheriff's Office is investigating Thursday morning's discovery of gang graffiti spray-painted on both the municipal building on Greene Street and the historic Signers Monument, which stands in front of it.

Sgt. Blaise Dresser said the words "Thugg Mafia" were displayed, referring to a local gang by that name.

He said investigators are reviewing surveillance video and believe the vandalism took place around midnight Wednesday.

Sgt. Dresser said he did not think the vandalism had anything to do with courthouse proceedings under way this week.

"There is no obvious connection to any gang activity in the trials," he said.

Flanking the doors to the building were the letters "TM" and the numbers "2013." Sgt. Dresser said the letters stand for the Thugg Mafia gang, an offshoot of the Folk Nation gang, and the numbers correspond to "T" and "M" as the 20th and 13th letters of the alphabet, respectively. A six-pointed star and the word "Bloods" written upside down, considered a sign of disrespect to the Bloods gang, were also painted on the building.

Investigators began seeing graffiti, or "tags," for the gang last year in an area near Laney-Walker Boulevard. Writing nearly identical to that found on the municipal building and the Signers Monument reappeared last week on the side of the Olde Town Apartments on Third Street.

It was the first time anyone could remember vandalism involving the Signers Monument, a 50-foot marble obelisk erected in 1848 to mark the burial place of two of Georgia's three signers of the Declaration of Independence -- George Walton and Lyman Hall.

When they catch them they should be made to walk up and down broad street on the next 6 first fridays with a sign that says "I have no home training" Maybe embarassing them is the way to go.

The entire gang should be publicly flogged for joining a group with such a stupid name. Kids training kids on how to act. What a good idea gangs are.

Augusta got owned by a gang of thugs. The only thing worse would be 4th street getting tagged.

With all the survellance cameras around I wonder how this class of trash cannot be identified and prosecuted. Oh yeah! They all look alike. Nice cover if you have the features.

Gangs mirror the savage mentality of their members. This is exactly how tribes (gangs) of men act in the wilds of the jungle and elsewhere. Some types of people no matter who they are will never be civilized and need to be kept away from the rest of us or exterminated before their ilk is allowed to spread any further ultimately bringing down a civilized world..

Thank you once again, Mr. Folk, for giving these "gangs" identities. This kind of so-called "news" should not be in the newspaper.
