METS: Pedro Martinez returned to the Dominican Republic to be with his sick father on Wednesday, delaying his plans to test his ailing hamstring.

Martinez had planned to rejoin the team for a bullpen session Wednesday. But Mets spokesman Jay Horwitz said Martinez, intending to fly to Atlanta, left a flight in Miami on Wednesday after Martinez received word through an e-mail that his father, Pablo Jaime , sustained a medical setback Wednesday morning.

Jaime, 78, has a form of brain cancer.

There was no immediate word on how long Martinez plans to remain in the Dominican Republic.

- Mets manager Willie Randolph issued an apology Wednesday to team ownership, the club's TV network and his players "for the unnecessary distraction" he created by suggesting he was portrayed in a different manner than white managers.

Randolph, the Mets' first black manager, created a stir with comments he made that appeared Monday in The Record of Hackensack, N.J.

Randolph brought up race when he questioned the way he has been presented by SNY, the team's TV network.

"Is it racial?" Randolph was quoted in the story. "Huh? It smells a little bit. ... I don't know how to put my finger on it, but I think there's something there."

YANKEES: Derek Jeter was in the lineup Wednesday against Baltimore, one night after getting hit on the left hand by a pitch. He was hitless in three at-bats, but scored a run.

"I'm fine," Jeter said. "Definitely good."

The star shortstop left Tuesday night's 12-2 loss to the Orioles in the third inning when he was plunked by right-hander Daniel Cabrera . X-rays were negative, and Jeter was considered day to day with a bruised hand.

RANGERS: Lost cleanup hitter Milton Bradley and manager Ron Washington when they were ejected in one heated minute in Wednesday night's 10-1 victory over Minnesota.

Bradley led off the second inning against Minnesota and thought he drew ball four from the Twins' Nick Blackburn . Plate umpire Jeff Nelson called strike three instead, and two batters later turned to the Texas dugout and tossed Bradley from the game as he shouted and pointed at his cap.

Washington then rushed out to yell at Nelson, and after several seconds of nose-to-nose arguing the Rangers skipper was ejected.

RED SOX: Called up Bartolo Colon from Pawtucket and sent right-hander Justin Masterson to the Triple-A team.

Colon, the AL Cy Young award winner in 2005, started and earned the win Wednesday against Kansas City.
