Patrols will be added on Hill

  • Follow Metro

A large group of Hill residents met Monday night and agreed to hire extra police patrols to thwart a recent rise in burglaries.

About 300 residents representing the newly formed Peachtree Place to Glenn Avenue Neighborhood Association, agreed to pay a fee to hire off-duty Richmond County sheriff's deputies to work special shifts.

Sheriff's Sgt. Richard Shiflett said the deputies would be hired to patrol Hill neighborhoods that have been recent targets of break-ins and thefts. Neighborhood association organizers collected money from residents throughout the meeting.

Sheriff Ronnie Strength also addressed the crowded parish hall at St. Mary on The Hill Catholic Church.

In addition to safety offering tips, such as locking doors and removing car keys from ignitions, Sheriff Strength said the rise in crime is linked to his department's shrinking deputy force.

"We have 30 fewer deputies than we had in 1997," he said, referring to a period when his office once received funding from the COPS (Community Oriented Policing) federal grant program.

Augusta commissioners Don Grantham and Joe Bowles told residents about their plans to target county-generated funds to help increase the Sheriff's Office budget.

Mr. Grantham said increasing the sales tax from 7-percent to 8-percent could make a difference by targeting more expenditures toward public safety.

Neighborhood association members said extra patrols will be added immediately, but they would not disclose police patrol destinations for security reasons.

As long as the endless

As long as the endless government social programs continue to encourage a life of "little education and no achievement" the frustrated recipients will continue to need tending by an ever growing police force. BREAK THE CIRCLE!

The entire city is receiving

The entire city is receiving less than average city services. At least the hill has enough money to provide it's own private security force. The right-wing has destroyed all public services in this nation, including law enforcement, in the name of fiscal conservatism. Of course, they provide billions for the security of a country who does not want us there. Brilliant!!!

The exodus of officers

The exodus of officers leaving Richmond County is it seems of bibical porportions...Not really but to tell you the truth this has happened over a period of time and not just an overnight problem...Years have gone by with proposal after proposal to increase Law Enforcements salaries and training resulting in being turned down...What results did you people think would come from this repeated inaction? Less crime...Please these criminals know a good thing when they see it...Less police equals greater opportunites for them...People's indifference equals greater hunting grounds with very little interference from an overworked, underfunded, and undertrained police force...In other words what goes around comes around...Stop gripping and whinning people and pay these men and women what they are worth...As it stands the paltry salaries are not worth one man or woman going in harms way on a daily basis....

IN order to kill the cancer,

IN order to kill the cancer, it should be removed promptly and completely, otherwise the system it has weakened, will not have the strength to recover. If a neighborhood voluntarily pays for the extra patrols, then they have taken the step to locate and remove the cancer that paid city servants are not getting done. If the city keeps spending local money to 'think-tanks' who take the money back to their own states, then the money keeps going out and little is left to recycle locally, so keep giving away what we have to unaffected and disinterested companies who have nothing invested here, and we will continue to see the negative responses and outrage for just plain dumb decisions. If anyone in Augusta wants this to change, we must keep telling those who make these thinking errors that their plan is bad for business and that we want quality of life improvements that will attract REAL investments, better benefits for all involved, not just the CONtractors who want to take the money and run, leaving us with another, yet again, failed plan to improve our city.

Crime is up not only "on the

Crime is up not only "on the hill" but all over the County! Why, because Cheif Fred Russell and his cronies won't provide the Sheriff's Deoartment with suffucuent funds to provide the needed services. And, Our local delegation will not allo the citizens a 1 percent sales tax for law enforcement like it has for the Fire Department for years.!!
Its past time for our local and state officials to get it right!

PT are you Black? You speak

PT are you Black? You speak so knowingly of the Black plight; you must be Black. I know Black people that don't know more about being Black than you. And I know Black people that would not dare speak for a race of people White or Black. Do you have a degree in sociology? Do you have a degree?
Everything that ills society is not the governments fault, the educational systems fault or Black peoples fault. You really should pluck the stye from your eye and walk in the light.

The question left to be

The question left to be answered is what area will the thugs hit next? They certainly won't retire simply because somebody took their most fertile playground.

reddog what black plight are

reddog what black plight are you speaking of...perhaps the one that says you get the job over a more qualified person because you are black, the one that says you will get your way in most circumstances if you yell racism loudly enough, or the one where you get to say whatever you want about other races and never get called down because of it or...etc. The "black plight" in my book is no more...The people back 60 years ago had a big problems, the people in other areas of the world have major problems one most important is just being allowed to live but the black in this country has no "plight"....

i for the life of me can not

i for the life of me can not figure out where pat thomas comes from.how is the gov't responsible for the failed war on poverty?the gov't at times has to step in and control peoples lives because they can't do it.lbj directed money to be sent into the projects and ghettos hoping that those affected would use it and invest it wisely.the recipients failed, not the gov't.40 years or so later we have nothing to show but more poverty, and the same projects that are just crime training centers.projects were meant to be used temporarily, now you have waiting lists for years for people wanting basically something for nothing.the gov't did not make those 13 yr old girls have baby after baby, they did not tell their children not to study in school because you'll never find a job anyway.they never told the girls to find a guy with a j-o-b never looking for someone with a future, just have a job.any man with one oz of pride in his body would not let his family come up this way.a man wouldn't hide in a closet until the case worker leaves.he would support his family!stop blaming the damn gov't! no one is making this trash commit crimes they chose their sorry destination, the gov't didn't help.

Reddog now that being said I

Reddog now that being said I will go one step further and state that at the present rate of rising prices, failed jobs, and a general decline in this nation from one end to the other over the past 50 to 60 years has finally caught up with all of us...All being the key word here, not black, white, or pink with green polka dots but All...A once powerful nation full of prosperity-for the most part- a nation where a man could go out and work for a decent days wage and support his family, a day when God was still a God to be worshiped, loved and feared(which He still is)...That time has past and the present time where we all have had anything and everything that added to our comfort or added to our entertainment has lead us to the decline we are presently enduring...It is not just you, me it is everyone who has to pay for the past...
