why's anyone so naive to expect ms. clinton being truthful at this stage in her life/career ??? altho, in fairness, other politicians're not immune from this affliction,,, where DID i put those billing records ???fu
Both Hillary Rodham Clinton and John McCain support a federal gas tax holiday this summer.
But it's Clinton's support that's most interesting.
It's a brilliant political ploy, certainly. It's a populist sentiment coming at just the right time -- when driver angst is at a high, and pivotal primaries take place today in North Carolina and Indiana. And the price of gasoline is a subject that everyone can understand, and that affects everyone.
The proposal is also keeping Barack Hussein Obama back on his heels, trying to defend the gasoline tax without appearing elitist. He's not succeeding.
It must be said that the tax holiday is, frankly, just a gimmick. It won't save most consumers more than about $30 over three months. But it just may help Clinton get back into the race for the Democratic nomination for president.
Yet, you have to wonder: If this is a sincere effort to help people, and not just a ploy, why stop with the gasoline tax? And why stop at three months?
If lower taxes help people, then why doesn't Mrs. Clinton offer permanent tax cuts of real substance? Why doesn't she get on board the effort to shrink government?
If the principle of lower taxes works with the gasoline tax over three months, why wouldn't it help people with other taxes over a longer period of time? Say, forever?
Isn't the heart of what she's advocating that we're better off when we get to keep more of the money we've earned?
The answer is simple, of course: She's not really saying that because she doesn't believe it. She believes she knows better how to spend money than you do. She's a big-government fan, her family having done quite well in government work. She believes in using government to redistribute wealth, a la the Marxists.
This is not a slam on her. It's simply the unbridled truth -- one proven by examining what few papers of hers have been released from her formative years in school. Indeed, she wrote her glowing college thesis on a 1960s leftist radical named Saul Alinsky.
Ultimately, her advocacy of the tax holiday is a ploy. She's not a believer in real tax relief. Consider: The many programs she is proposing to start or expand will cost this nation hundreds of billions of dollars a year, at a time when the nation is already $9 trillion in debt. (The Washington Post, hardly a libertarian publication, has been tabulating the costs of her proposals; more on that later.)
If Mrs. Clinton listened to the meaning of her own words, she wouldn't stop with tax-holiday gimmicks. She'd offer real and permanent tax relief.
why's anyone so naive to expect ms. clinton being truthful at this stage in her life/career ??? altho, in fairness, other politicians're not immune from this affliction,,, where DID i put those billing records ???fu
The choice for president this year is between "very poor" and "marxist incompetent". Now our president will be of the same high quality as our congress. hooray.
Where should I go on my gas tax holiday? Maybe a walking tour.
I know patricithoms. We have had such leadership these past 8 years as this country has never experienced. Your "hate America" rhetoric is more cynical than usual.
Shivas, while I see no good coming from any of our current presidential candidates, I don't feel hate for this country. At most I feel pity for the choices we limited ourselves to.
Wow, and I thought George Bush's rebate scheme was politically motivated! $9 trillion in debt? George W really has been busy for eight years!
For eight yearts we've had George W. campaigning for the Democrats, so I guess we'll just have to live with whatever we wind up getting next. I really don't see how we any of the three clowns currently in the race can do any WORSE than what our present "leader" has done.
Now as I see it, both Clinton and Mc Cain support the same thing, but everyone is going after Clinton. What a joke.
Lighten up, folks. The elections will soon take place, a new president will take office and prices will go back to normal. We are going through a pre-election, politics-as-usual phase that will be old news in a few short months. Don't ever forget the Democrats mantra "It's the economy". In 2oo6 it was vote them in and they would end the war in Iraq, they were voted in; the war continues and prices are sky-high. We can't say we didn't get change, just not what was promised. But then after all, there is an election to be won.
Also JL, Bush isn't running this time.
yes but there's a hidden gimmick - there'll be a plan to milk to those who are successful in order to replace the lost taxes
Prices will go back to normal??? Can I have a peak at your crystal ball because I sure could use the winning lottery numbers. I think we better get used to a new normal. I don't see prices changing for a long time. Has anyone had any experience with the car running on water thing? Wonder if it is real or just a gimmick. This would be the way to get around those oil fatcats. http://www.runningcaronwater.com/
tellme, You don't need a crystal ball, just a look at the past, pre-election politics in particular. The facts, just the facts.
Clinton will probably grow the government expense with social programs, but if McCain got in he would raise the goverment expense with extravagent military expense. Either way the government is going to grow, and if taxes do not pay for it, our country will just get more and more in debt to China.
I have looked at the past and it doesn't compare. Inflation this year is triple what should be expected for an election year. This isn't something that is just going to go away and be swept away by a new president.
I think the quality of presidential leadership we will get following the election will remain at the level it is at currently. Also, it's a little disingenuous to mention a $9 trillion debt without mentioning the causes of that debt. What this article addresses is a prospective event, and it hasn't yet contributed to the poor fiscal policy coming out of Washington by both dimwitted republicans and democrats.
no one mentions the michael moore interview on old grapehead larry king last week.moore mentioned that detroit knows of several new technologies in which cars can operate without using gas.he says they've known this for years.why keep it secret?i guess they are in collusion with big oil.one crook scratching the other crooks back.
I saw a car that can travel 2876 miles on only one gallon of gas, but the inventor is NOT allowed to sell this design. Oil companies complained that this would make them FLAT BROKE! This is why they offered 10 million dollars to the person who can get a gas engine to meet or exceed 6000 miles on just a gallon of gas.
ditto deborah! just what moore said.
So both Clinton and McCain support a Gas Tax Holiday yet it is Clinton who is using it as a political ploy and a gimmick and not McCain. Both are and both are wrong yet the Chronicle will never point that out. Cutting taxes has its consequences like falling bridges.
Just curious as to why the editorial staff will not print McCain's full name like they do Obama's??
And I was wondering the same thing Hypo and Sjgracie.....
Charley, need I remind you that the urban myth of these prototypes have been cirulating for decades? Michael Moore is Mocumentarist (I think I made up a word)... I am sure he will come out with a block buster tell all movie "proving" his spoutings with his "evidence". Cain, I have a vacation coming up... Any suggestions on the walk?
I think they use Obama's middle name because of the Muslim connotation: "Hussein". You know, like Saddam Hussein. Sidney just doesn't quite grab you like "Hussein". Barack Hussein Obama. Rolls right off the tongue. Kind of like Hillary Rodham Clinton. :) Have fun folks. Don't be so serious. How do you think a man gets rich in politics? It's not the salary. They go in poor, come out rich. OR, go in rich and come out richer. Either way, most are not looking out for you and me.
At least they have a gimmick! At this point $30.00 dollars a month sound darn good!
I don't know where DE2 and charley get their info, but....forget oil companies...someone with that knowledge could be a billionaire over night. Politicians would never keep such a secret in exchange for small amounts of money doled out to them by big oil when they could have billions. Conspiracy theories make such good novels...fiction novels
One must be pretty hard up and short sighted to get excited about 30 perceived dollars a month from gas tax relief. Tough times I know BUT it's NOT $30.00 a month. It's $28.00 over the entire Gas Tax Holiday and that is only if the greedy oil companies actually lower the price at the pump. Think they are going to do that? They smell more PROFIT. That $28 won't even get you a half a tank of gas. In the mean time, more pot holes form, less roads are built, more bridges collapse and the fat oil pigs get fatter.
I admit that saving 18 cents per gallon does not make a huge difference except to someone who uses gallons and gallons of gas but I do not follow your logic at all. No matter what the price of gas is, the savings willl be there. It's just that the higher the price gets, the less of a percentage the savings will be. Was that what you were trying to say?
