MEMBERSHIP: The Aiken branch has 20 members. South Carolina has more than 50 camps and a state membership of 3,600. To become a member, you must show proof of lineage to an influential Confederate figure -- a solider, politician or anyone else who worked for the Confederate cause. Membership costs $40 a year.
MISSION: To preserve the history of the South for future generations.
"If they love the community and they love their Southern heritage, then they would want to be a member," Mr. Temples said. "We also sponsor NJROTC programs, we're involved with the city of Aiken's adopt-a-parkway programs and sponsor a Little League ball team in Belvedere.
