AUGUSTA, Ga. - Dr. George Roy Mayfield, M.D., 81, entered into rest on Thursday, April 24, 2008 at the VA Medical Center. Dr. Mayfield was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Mayfield and was born in Americus, GA on November 5, 1926. He grew up in Atlanta, GA and graduated from Boy's High School in Atlanta and later Emory University Medical School. Dr. Mayfield served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. He was one of the earliest persons to be Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiology and was a Fellow of the American College of Cardiologists. Dr. Mayfield was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospitals in Nashville, Tennessee and Augusta, Georgia and later went into private practice. He was a former member of the Richmond County Medical Society. Dr. Mayfield was also a part time professor of Chemistry at Augusta State University and a member of The Torch Club of Augusta. Dr. Mayfield is survived by his three sons, Stephen R. Mayfield and his wife Erin, William C. Mayfield and his wife Kathy and David B. Mayfield and two grandchildren Joseph C. Mayfield and Jordon E.
