Media have it all wrong on Wright

  • Follow Letters

A rant for the Chronicle editorial's uninformed and condescending attack on the prophetic tradition in the African-American Christian church and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright ("Peddling hatred," April 29).

I make a plea from the hearts of an elderly white couple who settled in Augusta to help our parents transit their last years: Open your ears and hear what this gifted pastor is saying. The media suits, in all-out attack mode, are so badly out of touch that they cannot see the need to reverse the pervasive growth of mega-corporate ruthlessness and ownership of our government -- and they can't see a disregard for our national well-being, the social contract and the common good.

Larry Kelliher, Augusta

If you can't see and hear the

If you can't see and hear the hate in Wright (does not deserve to be called pastor) you must be hearing something different than what I hear and see. I'm not a big fan of big government or the corporate establishments either but I can see what and who makes this United States the greatest in the world and it's not JW.

The things you list have very little to do with Wright's message. He's a good speaker and a demagogue and he's become rich as a result. But, he's not a good American.

Is Wright running for

Is Wright running for president? Wright is so insignificant when we look at the big picture. The liberal news media has made him out a hero. It time to get back on track and throw our support behind Obama as he take the oath and try to straighten
out this 8 year mess he will inherit. Where is Rumsfeld?

That is the problem people

That is the problem people did "open" their ears and were horrified at the intent of his "sermon". What religion is this man associated-must be a new one. The lack of Love (the two greatest commandments love God and others) demonstrates he is not an advocate of the christian religion.

A person who admits to hating

A person who admits to hating America (a country where he has become a millionaire) and "white folk" is good for the nation?
Can you imagine little children hearing this pastor preach his hatred and the effect it would have on their young lives. It is now plain for all to see why there is such division in the country. How many others, I wonder, like this man, are out there holding back "their" people and getting rich in the process.

No Jack....Wright is not

No Jack....Wright is not running for president....but a man who either can't size up his character in 20 years, or is lying to us, IS running for president. The BO deciples want people to just stop talking about this as if it isn't important, because they are so willing to elect him they are willing to overlook the fact that he is either terribly naive, or just a racist.

It is almost unbelieveable

It is almost unbelieveable that Obama has a chance given his lack of experience and associations. I have jested he is the anti-Christ maybe I'm a prophet. Hee,hee. Wright is an anti-Christ by his own words-just not "the anti-Christ".

You are being deceived by JW!

You are being deceived by JW! I agree with all these others in these posts, this man doesn't deserve to have the title of Pastor OR Reverend. This man is a hateful, bitter man! He will be the fall for OB's Campaign. My kids came home to tell me that another kid (african american) told them that in 2020 he hopes all white people become slaves. What kind of world do you think we all live in??? This man clearly is UNDOING what Martin Luther King was trying to DO! This is an INSULT to not only a righteous man, but to the WORLD!

DeborahElliott2, your kids

DeborahElliott2, your kids can legitimately tell the other kid who said he hopes all white people become slaves in 2020 that in the past there were lots and lots of white people who were enslaved. Many of these white slaves were owned by black people in Africa, particularly after the Muslim conquest. Merely historical fact. Slavery was once a way of life everywhere (still practiced today, mostly in Africa). When one nation/city/village/tribe conquered another, the victors chose as part of the spoil the survivors whom they wished to take home as slaves to keep or sell. The practice of slavery was never delegated to just one particular race of people. All races are guilty of it at some time in history. So if any preacher wishes to denounce whites for having kept slaves a century or so ago, he would do well to look into the slave trade that is flourishing in non-white nations today.

I agree with the posts about

I agree with the posts about Wright not being the one to run for president but Obama is and he praised this man before he rejected him. Wright told the truth when he said he (Obama) was just doing what a politican had to do because I don't think he really would have had it not been for people getting upset. Perhaps Obama believes some of the crap that Wright likes to sling. All I can say is God help us in the upcoming elections because our choices are not looking good.

So true churchi so

So true churchi so true.....That is what happens when people foster the underbelly of hatred for so many years... Change in the Obama world is black on top of the heap with the white man in the dirt beneath his feet....What is needed is change in the form of God fearing individuals in all areas of government beginning in the White House reaching down into Congress and Senate..What is not needed is someone who has been filled with hate messages all his life for anything white as well as holding the distinction of one of the most inexperienced among politicians.....

The "prophetic tradition" in

The "prophetic tradition" in many apostolic and charismatic churches (including Jehovah's Witnesses and Mormons) is really nothing more than intellectual laziness and a failure to carefully examine the evidence and facts and where they both lead and do not lead. Far from something to be proud of, it is actually something to be very ashamed of since it speaks more to a pagan influence of foreign gods than it does the specific I AM of the Hebrews. I think its no small significance that the nation of Islam has offered to protect this man since his words have been brought to the light. Could it be because he, and the "tradition" which supported him for over two decades, is more wrapped up in espousing foreign gods and personal preferences than it is in proclaiming an objective truth?

The only good that Rev Wright

The only good that Rev Wright has done is to give us a glimpse of who Obama truly is. You do not define yourself by becoming president. You define yourself first, then run for President. We have NO IDEA who the REAL Obama is. We probably won't know until all these people trying to show how liberal they are vote him in. I really fear for our future, if he wins the election.

TY Mr Wright for exposing

TY Mr Wright for exposing Obamamamamama as what his is: non-qualified elitist politician. No Hope for Change there, huh? The Audacity of him to expect the fine black race to vote him just because he's black. Wake up black race: this man is not your saviour. He will lie to you to get elected and do whatever benefits him and his buddies, just like anyone else. In fact, exactly as every white man before him.

Rev Wright is a "warmed over

Rev Wright is a "warmed over version" of "Daddy Grace and Father Divine" of the 50's and 60's. Nationally known figures with untold wealth who were viewed by blacks as "gods". Some viewed them a immortal. They ran scams, just like Rev Wright, and by the Richard Roberts, Dorothy Spalding, Joel, Pat Robertson, etc. "Partner with me" is a "pyramid scam" perpetrated on the innocent who desire to do something for the kingdom of God. It is all about the "Benjamins". Black or white, Elmer Gantry's all.

A carnival huskster, showman,

A carnival huskster, showman, in African Robes. Preaching how downtrodden and abused black folk are while "rolling in the millions" himself. Obama is the same mold. He will tell black folk that they need him to be their savior because they have no hope of "rising from poverty and slavery" brought onw by whites. Obama and Wright target the government, but they mean "whitie". Black folk know what they mean. Have we not been told by physchiatrist that if you constanly tell a child that they are worthless and vistims that they will become same. Hence the policy used toward African Americans. Victim theology = money.

Rev Wright is no preaching

Rev Wright is no preaching "traditional black religion". Prior to the sixties, most African Americans were hearing Bible sermons and being admonistished to repent of sin, come to Christ for salvation and be baptized. The same message from the white pulpit. But now, not oly in the black church, comes a new revelation of "we can and must save our selves and out planet from destruction". This is not of God. So it must be of the Devil. Socialism, Communism and New Age Philosophy are replacing "true faith in the GOD of the Bible".
