Tell sponsors you don't like TV filth

  • Follow Letters

In response to the April 29 editorial "We don't deserve this" -- I say amen!

Enough is enough. None of us want to seem like prudes or inhibit free expression, but filth and vulgarity have become the norm of the media. There is no "safe" hour when children will not be exposed to depravity in the most visual ways. The Parents Television Council attempts to keep tabs on the worst shows, and to inform us who the sponsors are.

If we want change, we must let those sponsors know that we are serious and threaten to stop buying. Only then will we get some results.

Betty Wray, Augusta

I took a class once on social

I took a class once on social behaviors. We had to go out and rent old movies and get an understanding of how that specific era looked at changes being made in their time. This is one of those times that most behaviors are considered acceptable, but the question is, by whom? Big Businesses! They make money from this believe it or not. Since nobody really said anything before, they considered this as acceptable cause people even bought games to play depicting such things. Now we see that games of violence are coming out and people are buying it so much that it is sold like fire before it even hits the shelves! Your only recourse now is Government issued TV programs! We are expected to make noise to our government to regulate this stuff on the air as well, and that creates more problems! So now, we are FORCED by this same government to purchase digital boxes to even WATCH TV. Change? The only Change I can expect is to be forced to accept the changes our government all ready allowed to big businesses and shut off the boob tube and move on.

I agree with just turn it

I agree with just turn it off. We are to guard what we see and hear. You will also gain health. Watching the drug commericals are also making people sicker. You can get the news elsewhere and there is much entertaining radio like RUSH.

We don't watch the junk on tv

We don't watch the junk on tv unless you count American Idol; it has me hooked. Even the blood and gore of the "law and Order" type shows have led us to tune them out. Can't anything be sacred anymore? (Perhaps that is the whole idea, the cruder and coarser, the better, but not in our household.)

First of all RUSH is an

First of all RUSH is an idiot, but that's neither here nor there.

If you don't like what you see on TV, don't watch it - it's as simple as that. Change the channel. Turn it off. Go outside and get some fresh air. Read a book. There are lots of alternatives both on the TV, and outside of the TV.

However, do NOT presume to tell the rest of us what we should or should not be watching.

Yes, digital boxes. Starting next year, all television stations are required by law to broadcast only in digital, so they will be shutting down their analog broadcast equipment. That means that you won't be able to throw up a pair of rabbit ears and watch over-the-air TV, without a converter box. The government is issuing, if requested, coupons (vouchers, whatever) for discounts on what is basically a digital converter for your TV, so you can continue to receive TV programming, without having to buy a whole new television.

The government only will

The government only will issue "converter box" coupons to specific addresses which are not served by any cable company. If the cable goes past your door, you'll not get any compensation to buy those "converter boxes". As long as you have cable or satellite, your TV viewing will not change and you will not need these "converter boxes". This change will only affect VERY rural TV viewers, most of whom have already opted for satellite. As for TV content: garbage.

Betty (sounds like an old

Betty (sounds like an old name to me, hate to say), you are a prude. You probably have nostalgic thoughts of the old times. Donna Reid and Leave it to Beaver may portray happy swell times, but that was not real life for everyone. Stop getting things mixed up. I know older people who do not get blinded by nostalgia. They confirmed that yes, people did curse back four years ago, yes people did have sex as teens. There were gangs. TV did not display what was going on, but the stuff still went on.

Deek: if you wish to relate a story about how YOU got a cert for free etc, post on. The incident of being denied coupons has actually happened to my residential customers. Relate not to me the stories of your neighbors, who if they have both cable TV and satellite TV service and yet have a TV with neither are very unusual and do not hold up well to analogies with most people. Anyone can apply for the discount coupons, only those with no options will get them.

imdstuf, if you don't like

imdstuf, if you don't like Ms. Wray's opinion that's just fine and dandy, say so. One loses credibility on their opinion and with their argument when one gets personal with invective. One needn't insult someone to disagree with them.

I prefer my filth on the

I prefer my filth on the internet. T.V. is rather passe. Dang t.v. is always blurring the T&A and bleeping out the coloful language. How can I "lust in my heart" without something to lust after. I was in Greece recently and noted porn on their t.v. Of course I quickly changed channels and never looked back. Dang u think I'm some kinda pervert and not sexually repressed like your average american. Hey the bible has some pretty racy stuff in it. Deception, murder, adultery, fornication, sodomy, war, love,etc-a book for all seasons.

Betty, you're absolutely

Betty, you're absolutely right - if you don't like what's being shown, don't buy from the sponsors. Now, if the rest of us are fine with it and keep buying from those sponsors, then you'll need to either turn off your tv or get a group together and buy your own tv station where you can broadcast whatever you want. Or you could broadcast over the internet. Land of the free, home of the brave, and make your own choices about what you watch.

I also love how Fox News

I also love how Fox News people such as Bill O' cry out about how bad something is, then they show the clip of the supposedly offensive thing rather than saying it is too offensive to air. Hypocrites lol
