Hughes, placed on the 15-day disabled list Thursday, had an MRI exam that revealed the stress fracture in the ninth rib on his right side. He will be shut down for four weeks and then re-evaluated. Hughes is 0-4 with a 9.00 ERA in six starts this year.
- Minor league pitcher Angel Reyes was suspended for 50 games after testing positive for stanozolol metabolites under baseball's minor league drug program.
ANGELS: Nick Adenhart was called up from Triple-A Salt Lake, and the right-hander was scheduled to start Thursday night's game against Oakland.
- Infielder Maicer Izturis was put on the 15-day DL with a strained lower back, and right-hander Kelvim Escobar (shoulder) was transferred to the 60-day DL.
TIGERS: Reinstated reliever Francisco Cruceta from the restricted list before Thursday night's game against the New York Yankees. Cruceta, from the Dominican Republic, had trouble getting his work visa this spring. He was assigned to Triple-A Toledo on April 22.
RED SOX: Boston has spoken with officials in Sarasota, Fla., about relocating their spring training home from Fort Myers, Fla., to the facility that will become vacant when the Cincinnati Reds move to Arizona in two years.
CUBS: Left fielder Alfonso Soriano went 0-for-4 against the Milwaukee Brewers on Thursday after being activated from the 15-day disabled list. Soriano strained his right calf in the first inning against Cincinnati on April 15 after making his familiar hop to catch a fly ball.
ROCKIES: Star shortstop Troy Tulowitzki tore a tendon in his left quadriceps and could be out until the All-Star break.
"Best case scenario is six weeks. The realistic one is a few months," agent Paul Cohen told The Associated Press. "We're hoping it's a couple months, but we won't know until they do further medical tests."
Tulowitzki was injured while charging a grounder in the first inning at San Francisco on Tuesday night.
NATIONALS: Manager Manny Acta said the team will keep three catchers on the roster for the foreseeable future once Paul Lo Duca (bruised hand) returns from the disabled list. Acta said Lo Duca will probably rejoin the Nationals today. Lo Duca would join Wil Nieves and Johnny Estrada as the catchers on the big-league roster.
DODGERS: Buzzie Bavasi , who built Dodgers teams that won the World Series in Brooklyn and Los Angeles, died Thursday. He was 93. Bavasi's Dodgers teams included future Hall of Famers Jackie Robinson , Duke Snider , Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale .
