She ought not to be in pictures

  • Follow Editorials

Apparently one of the most dangerous places to be these days -- and one of the most morally sickening places as well -- is between Miley Cyrus and a camera.

By now most folks have at least heard about the sexually provocative pictures of the 15-year-old singer and actress from TV's Hannah Montana .

No, not her amateur bikini photos that were leaked online. That was months ago.

No, not the pictures of her in a hotel hallway, in suggestive embraces with another girl. That was a while back, too.

And no, not even the photos that recently surfaced showing Cyrus pulling down her shirt to reveal her bra, then sitting semi-clad on a boy's lap.

No, these latest, professionally-shot photos are slated to appear in the upcoming issue of Vanity Fair magazine. The most-discussed photo shows a topless Cyrus, looking over her shoulder, clutching what appears to be a satin bedsheet as her only means of covering herself.

When word and sight of the photos hit the gossip pages, Cyrus initially played the reports down. But as the controversy grew, she recanted, saying she felt "embarrassed," and she apologized for the inappropriate nature of the photos.

Vanity Fair and renowned celebrity photographer Annie Liebovitz, however, defend these obviously exploitative photos -- saying they were taken strictly for art's sake, and with the blessings of Cyrus' parents and all of her minders.

And that is a big part of the problem. This young girl has a retinue of adults tending to her life and career, so the natural presumption is that they can make responsible decisions on her behalf and dispense sound advice.

There were no signs of that happening here. Did no one even question the morality of snapping pics of an underage, partially nude girl? If anything, the opposite occurred. At some point, a misguided adult had to convince Cyrus that posing for these kinds of photos is OK.

There simply is no denying the carnality in the most talked-about photo. The satin sheet, the mussed-up hair, Cyrus' disturbingly suggestive gaze -- it fits the definition of pornography to a "T."

And oh, by the way, since she's only 15, isn't this technically child porn? What's the difference between Vanity Fair and a thousand kiddie nudity Web sites? Tastefulness? Quality of the sheets?

Until recently, Cyrus had an expected squeaky-clean image. But her recent failures to stay modestly clothed in the presence of a camera appear to be the start of a chain of events that the public already has seen play out in the trainwreck lives of two former Disney stars -- Britney Spears and Lindsay Lohan.

Is that the grim fate that awaits Miley Cyrus -- a sweet, talented girl who is bending to the mercy of an entertainment industry that specializes in the sick hypersexualization of underage starlets?

We should hope not. We should hope instead that she -- and the adults surrounding her -- chart a future using a more reliable moral compass, steering clear of the storms that could sink her career and her good name.

Unfortunately many out there

Unfortunately many out there will shout to the roof tops that she is able to make her own decisions and furthermore it is a free country, free enterprise, free speech, just for fun, parents say okay, ACLU says it is okay, liberals say what's the harm what's the fuss....Right---Wrong it is not okay and this child has been introduced into a world that doesn't care once they have used up her looks and talent....This behavior is not okay for anyone....

I think this is all a huge publicity stunt. I've seen the pictures, and anybody who says "it fits the definition of pornography to a "T" must not have seen them. There isn't anything there. Sorry to disappoint you, but the pictures are run of the mill glamor shots.

Wow, christian134 defends the

Wow, christian134 defends the Mormon sect in Texas raping underage girls, and then jumps on a great 15 year old kid for taking professional pictures that she thinks is sexually "suggestive." Just go along with whatever the AC tells you to think. What we have is a total void of individualism.

I haven't seen any of these,

I haven't seen any of these, other than the one with the sheet they've been showing on the news. Didn't look that awful or even terribly suggestive to me - anybody remember Brooke Shields back in the day? Having said that, it does seem to me that one of the main characteristics of stage parents is that they are willing to exploit their child.

What are you babbling about

What are you babbling about now Shivas and where did you get the idea I have ever defended any piece of scum for the raping of a child?....Back up and think again...If I had my way I would take everyone who harms a child and put them away forever....Now as far as rushing into it all I said it might have gone a little smoother handled differently but if one child was saved then it is all worth it no matter what.....Furthermore I don't believe I said one word to you this morning shivas but be that as it may have a good morning....

Thanks for the warning, Chronicle and Christian 134! I have fortunately NOT viewed these destructive images that you have described in such detail. Further, I pledge to ignore them completely if able to avoid their display in the daily course of pulling myself up by my bootstraps. Glory! Does that make me conservative and honorable now? When can I start telling others what to do? It's a hard, hard road.

You are correct as usual, Christian 134. I believe I am still disoriented from watching a militaristic series appearing these last few evenings on the un-godly PBS network.

I don't usually agree with the Editorial staff but I do today. Bad judgment all around. I remember Britney's Rolling Stone cover and it got a similar response and look where she is now. Why don't they learn from the mistakes of the Lindsey Lohans and Britney Spears of the world??

There is a psychologist in

There is a psychologist in this town who went to jail for taking pictures of children with much more clothes on than Miley Cyrus had on. A father who would allow his daughter to be photographed in the nude with only a satin sheet covering her, should be charged with contributing to the delinquency of a minor, child endangerment, or sexual abuse. If such photos were discovered in a home by DFCS, there would be charges of sexual exploitation. I don't blame Miley - I blame her father and grandmother who were present for and approved the photos.

Soldiers are being killed and

Soldiers are being killed and wounded everyday, the price for a gallon of gas is half of what many people make an hour, some in this great country are having trouble paying for food and a rich young singer posing semi-nude gets more attention and media coverage.

Once again, something blown out of proportion by the media....it isn't porn, nothing but her back shows. You see more than that from 13 year olds in the mall......or walking down the street..

I find it ia bit disturbing

I find it ia bit disturbing but not surprising. I can imagine a 15 year old living her life in the limelight without normal girly things in her life, and wanting somehow to be like others, Given the background of the family , I think they have done a tremendous job of keeping her image clean; it can't have been easy,

That picture doesn't disturb

That picture doesn't disturb me as much as the moves to music Miley and Brittney make while fully clothed. I didn't find the picture suggestive at all, I thought it was "artsy" like Miley aaid, but not a very flattering picture of her face, unfortunately. If the parents and Miley like it, for their own home, that's fine, but it is on the edge of too mature for public use, even though Miley is in the public eye almost constantly. I am surprised that Disney objected. I think they just objected to Vanity Fair getting any publicity from their "property" Miley. Disney allows its minors to prance about and undulate suggestively on stage with no qualms as long as Disney is getting some compensation out of it. Let the two business entities duke it out. I really don't care about the "artsy" pic if her family approved it, except that I feel sorry for her and her family letting her grow up too soon. I wouldn't allow my children to pose like that, but that's my family's values.

When you consider that the

When you consider that the Cyrus family were dirt poor, mountain folks and now , here they are, kind of like Jed Clampett, they have hit it rich. They have really tried to protect Miley, but I think the money aspect has a lot of bearing on what they allow. She will soon out-grow her "Hannah Montana" image and this might be a small way of getting her ready for more adult roles.

5:00elswhr, You are probably right. If you have a daughter, take a picture of her like that and post it on her MySpace page. If you do not have a daughter simply ask one of the 13 year olds you see in the mall to pose for you like that. I am sure it will not be a problem for you. When we are not looking at someone else's daughter - it's a different story, isn't it?

Somehow JesusIsComing it is

Somehow JesusIsComing it is never quite the same if something of this nature involves one's own.......Only if it happens to one of their own will people stop speaking like it is a normal state of affairs for a child to appear in public dressed in nothing but a sheet draped over them....With all the perverts out there just waiting to jump on someone like that child or possibly stalk the child in the photo....Anything and everything that can happen will happen if our children are thrown to the wolves so to speak....

I have a good feeling about

I have a good feeling about Miley Cyrus. I believe her to be a very mature 15 year old who will see the fallacy of her actions with the current bad publicity; that she will use it for good and grow up to be someone we can be proud of. She is in my prayers.

The only photo that disturbed me was one of Miley and her dad. The suggestive posing made them appear as boyfriend and girlfriend not father and daughter.
