Most schools don't have enough of the right kind of security personnel, deputy sheriffs.
I find it rather remarkable that in this day and age, after the numerous school shootings that have occurred across this great, loving nation of ours -- and after the numerous children that have been killed because some other kid was having a "bad day" -- that any school exists where individuals who don't go to that school, or are even in any school, can gain easy access to these buildings.
Most schools nowadays have security personnel to ensure this doesn't happen, or have most of the access doors to their schools locked to avoid strange people coming and going, but apparently this idea didn't occur to anyone around here yet. I am referring, of course, to your front-page article April 22, announcing the arrests of certain individuals who were involved in some type of fracas at a Richmond County school earlier this month.
I noticed that most of those arrested were older than 17. That leads me to believe they should have been out of school already and working, or at least doing something productive (such as going to college). Also, police are saying some of those involved didn't even go to that school. How ironic is it that these kids ditch school, drop out of school, can't be bothered with school and don't think learning is cool -- but when it comes to raising Cain or wanting to start some garbage, they show up in droves and can't wait to get into the building?
By the way, I thought the gang situation in Augusta had been successfully taken care of a while back when they had that big bust, and we were treated to huge headlines about how great a job the Richmond County cops did clearing the streets of the city from the criminal element. Oops! Looks like they didn't get them all.

This is a problem that is going to take great effort...The solution lies not only with the police departments, school officers, teachers etc. etc. but with parents who have to take back their children from the streets....It can be done but it is going to have to begin within the family unit which sadly most of these gang members have not been acquainted....
All the problems are with us, but the writer couldn't seem to stop until she threw some abuse at our law enforcement. Read the ACES, it actually makes a point.
If ignorance is bliss, some people are mighty peaceful!
I have heard that in many school shootings in the past many of the kids were on ritalin. Has the research been done on that to see if that was the case?
School principals refuse to make their schools secure. They are wimps. All schools should have doors that are locked and verified secure on a regular basis. Of course, the doors should have alarmed crash bars so students can get out in case of emergency. All entrances to schools should be manned with security guards with metal detectors. The principals and the police are much more interested in catching a perpetrator than in preventing the event in the first place. But then when they catch the perpetrator, the punishment is to be sent to alternative school. What a vicious circle!
purvisinvestments you presented a sound question but I still believe that the fault lies not in the medicines but in an atmosphere were kids are looking to other kids to raise them, to clothe and feed them and most of all give them a love that is perverted but one they depend upon....People produce children but do not want to care for them....Sad but true...
purvis..I don't know the answer but I would assume that there were problems before Ritalin would be prescribed. On occassion, kids seem to be wired wrong somehow and their behavior is not easily understood.
Could not help but take a shot a law enforcement. Every arrest mean one less punk on the street. Myers, what are you doing to help with this problems, besides sitting on your buttocks?
School is for learning. If a child is not there to LEARN, they don't need to be there. It is not the job of the school system to discipline our children and anyone who thinks they should, should not bring children into this world. Teachers are trained to teach. The responsibility of "child rearing" begins and ends with the parents. Those who are lousy at parenting, should pay the price for the actions of their children until they reach legal age. Parents, stop with the excuses and accept responsibility for the actions of your offspring!
Ritalin was the "Cure All" in years past to fix all of the behavior problems in kids. Now that the problems still exist, kids are being diagnosed as bi-polar and given even "Better" drugs. Instead of giving our kids drugs, we need more of what several writers have mentioned. Parents (emphasis on Plural).
You hit the nail on the head there, Ephesians6. Unfortunately, there are parent's out there who will not allow their precious babies to take responsibility for their actions when they get in trouble. This causes numerous problems for the school, administration, teachers and their peers. Too bad the parents cannot see the future for their children. Putting the blame on others only allows the child to be a victim the rest of his or her life. But, in this great country of ours, we are required to educate ALL children, even those who cause problems. I'm not sure what the answer is.
