Lynx forced to nix motorcycle raffle

The Augusta Lynx's plans for a Harley Davidson motorcycle giveaway have hit a dead end.

A promotion to benefit MCG Children's Medical Center was scuttled after the minor league hockey organization learned it is not authorized to conduct raffles under Georgia law, general manager Dan Troutman said in a letter to participants.

Troutman said a donation to MCG still will be made and that fans who bought raffle tickets will be refunded in the near future.

Troubled ex-Bulldog Thurman reinstated

Cincinnati Bengals linebacker Odell Thurman has been reinstated by the NFL after being suspended for the past two seasons.

The Bengals said Monday they were informed by commissioner Roger Goodell that Thurman is eligible to play. He had been suspended because of violations of the NFL substance abuse policy.

He was cleared in January by the NFL to resume working out with the Bengals.

A second-round draft pick from Georgia in 2005, Thurman started 15 games at middle linebacker, led the team in tackles and tied the team rookie record with five interceptions.

- Colts running back Kenton Keith was arrested after refusing to leave a nightclub parking lot that was being cleared by police.

Keith was charged early Sunday with misdemeanor counts of disorderly conduct, resisting law enforcement, public intoxication and contributing to the delinquency of a minor, because a man he brought to the club with him was 19, police said.

Vols' quarterback has elbow surgery

Tennessee quarterback Jonathan Crompton underwent successful arthroscopic surgery on his right elbow and is expected to be ready to work out with the team by early June.

Crompton is slated to start for the Volunteers.

Phelps takes job as Drake's head coach

Drake has hired Arizona State assistant Mark Phelps as its new men's basketball coach.

Phelps' hiring was announced Monday morning at a news conference. He will replace The Associated Press Coach of the Year Keno Davis , who left last week to take the job at Providence.

- James Green was hired as the men's basketball coach at Jacksonville State, leaving Mississippi Valley State after leading the Delta Devils to their first NCAA Tournament since 1996.

Lady Jaguars notch consolation victory

The Augusta State women's team won 5-4 over Georgia College & State to place fifth in the consolation bracket at the Peach Belt Tournament.

Nathalia Rodrigues , Fernanda Chiaparini , Bianca Machado and Giovana Fensterseifer won their singles matches. The doubles team of Laura Ferreira and Machado sealed the victory.

The men's squad was swept 5-0 by Francis Marion, as the Jaguars fell to sixth.

Strickland receives All-Conference nod

For the third consecutive season, USC Aiken catcher Jessica Strickland was named to the Peach Belt's All-Conference team.

Augusta State catcher Ashley Roberts joined Strickland on the team. Georgia College & State's Sherquita Bostick earned the conference Player of the Year honor.

Red-hot Pacers are back inside top 10

After a perfect 6-0 week, USC Aiken (40-11) moved up two spots to ninth in the Collegiate Baseball Magazine Division II Top 30 poll.

On a seven-game winning streak, the Pacers reached 40 wins for the 10th time with a win Saturday against Lander.
