The theater and music departments at the University of South Carolina Aiken are teaming up for An Evening of Broadway Memories.

"This is the inaugural event for the theater and music department's spring show," said Jack Benjamin, theater professor.

The departments already team up in the winter for the annual Feast of Carols.

Each year, the spring show will highlight a decade, a composer or a specific theme in Broadway music.

The music of Rodgers and Hammerstein will be featured in the inaugural event, which will be at 8 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday, April 27, at the Etherredge Center at USC Aiken.

"We have 24 different Rodgers and Hammerstein songs," Dr. Benjamin said.

Music from five musicals, Oklahoma!, The Sound of Music, South Pacific, Carousel and The King and I , plus one song from State Fair , will be presented in the concert.

Costuming and staging would not be as elaborate as if the complete musical was presented, he said.

"There will be some dialogue in between each show," he said. "We'll give some history to set up the songs. It's like Side by Side by Sondheim."

Dr. Benjamin called the show's format a "staged concert."

"It's a reasonably new form," he said. "The most popular ones have been of Les Miz (Les Miserables ) and South Pacific ."

Tickets are $20 for adults, $15 for senior citizens and $7 for students.
