NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - James Gibson 'Jack' Jackson, lll, MD, entered into rest on April 12, 2008, at home in New Smyrna Beach, Florida surrounded by his family, friends, and his pets. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 19, 2008 at 11:00 AM in The Church of the Good Shepherd with The Very Reverend Robert D. Fain officiating. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park. Dr. Jackson was born in Atlanta, Georgia on May 14, 1940 to James G. Jackson, Jr. and Mary Hutchinson Jackson. He grew up in both Greenville, South Carolina, and Augusta, Georgia. Dr. Jackson was so loved by his friends that two high schools claimed him as a member of their senior class. He attended Clemson University and graduated from the University of Georgia. Dr. Jackson served in the United States Air Force during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Following active duty, he joined the US Air Force Reserves and was accepted to the Medical College of Georgia where he finished Residencies in both General Surgery and Orthopaedic Surgery. He joined The Augusta Orthopaedic Clinic and was a member of the staff at St. Joseph's Hospital and University Hospital of Augusta. Dr. Jackson was licensed to practice medicine in South Carolina, Georgia, and later, in Florida. He was a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, a member of the Georgia Orthopaedic Society, a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Jackson served as Chief of Staff at St. Joseph's Hospital and was very committed to the integrity and professionalism of medicine and patient care. He was instrumental in bringing the first arthroscope to St. Josephs in the 1970s. Always keeping abreast of technology, Dr. Jackson was the "go to man" in his office. In Augusta, Dr. Jackson was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church, The Augusta Country Club and West Lake Country Club. He was co-founder of the MCG Flying Club. In 1997, Dr. Jackson and his wife, Terri, moved to New Smyrna Beach where he had spent many happy summers with his grandparents. Dr. Jackson started an orthopaedic practice, ABC Orthopaedics, in New Smyrna. He was a member of the staff at both Bert Fish Memorial Hospital as well as Halifax Health Medical Center. He retired from medicine due to his progressive illness and then joined his wife in developing a recognized real estate team with The Keyes Company/ Realtors. Again, he was very active in his new career, always the "go to man," always the stable sounding board for his colleagues. In New Smyrna, Dr. Jackson was a member of St. Peter the Fisherman Episcopal Church, Sugar Mill Country Club, the Smyrna Yacht Club and the New Smyrna Beach Boat and Ski Club. Dr. Jackson is survived by his loving wife Terri McLendon Jackson of New Smyrna Beach, Florida; a daughter, Darcey Jackson McCoury (Monie) of Boone, North Carolina; a son, James Gibson "Jay" Jackson, IV (April DeLisle), of Atlanta; his granddaughters, Yancey Taylor, Kylie and Kinley McCoury of Boone, North Carolina; his brother William Hutchinson Jackson (Jan) of Augusta; his brother-in-law, Hank Pond, of Augusta and many nieces and nephews. Dr. Jackson was predeceased by his parents, James G. Jackson, Jr. and Mary Hutchinson Jackson and his sister, Mary Prioleau Pond. The honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Carl M. Nechtman, Dr. James L. Becton, Dr. Joe D. Christian, Dr. H. North Goodwin, Dr. Craig T. Kerins, Dr. J. Allan Goodrich, Mr. Monie McCoury, Mr. Donald E. McLendon, Mr. Michael L. McLendon, Mr. Tony Moyer, and Cpt. William A. Waters (USN, Ret.). Honorary pallbearers are ask to assemble at the church at 10:30 AM on Saturday.
