A carnival, a car show, a flea market and children's craft area are just a few of the activities during the four-day event, according to Kim Lyons, of Fort Gordon's Directorate of Morale, Welfare and Recreation, which sponsors the event.

"This was called Cinco de Mayo," she said.

The new name, she said, represents a wider range of Spanish-speaking people and culture.

"We want to create events that cover everybody," she said.

Latino Fest will be May 1-4 at Fort Gordon's Barton Field.

A carnival with games and rides will be the mainstay of the entire event. It opens at 4 p.m. Thursday and Friday, 10 a.m. Saturday and noon Sunday. Wristbands for unlimited rides are available for $12 Thursday, $20 Friday and Saturday and $15 Sunday.

Special events on Saturday, May 3, include the annual Fort Gordon Service Club Spring Flea Market from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event raises funds for area charities and the service club's college scholarship program.

Spaces cost $25 and $45 and can be purchased in person from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Saturday and April 25 and 26 at the Post Exchange and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today, Tuesday and April 24 and 29 and May 1 at the Fort Gordon Thrift Shop. For more information, call (706) 364-8702 or visit www.fortgordon.com.

From noon to 4 p.m. on May 3, there will be a car, truck and motorcycle show sponsored by the Better Opportunities for Single Soldiers' organization.

Throughout the weekend, the Alicia Y. Rumba Brava Band will play, and there will be salsa dancing.

Children's events will be at the Kid's Zone area from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and noon to 5 p.m. Saturday. On Friday, May 2, there will be crafts and games, and on Saturday, May 3, there will be an egg toss, kid's karaoke, bubbles and arts and crafts.

Admission to Latino Fest is free.
