Science fair winners
Winners of the 2008 Science and Engineering Fair Regional Competition, sponsored by Washington Savannah River Co., University of South Carolina Aiken and The South Carolina Academy of Science, were:
High School Division -- Jenny Mi , Lakeside, first; Wood Dennis , Academy of Richmond County, second; and Melanie B. Aldred , North Augusta, third.
Middle School Division -- Erik Brown , Saint Mary Help of Christians, first; Eric Sherburne , Saint Mary Help of Christians, second; and Joseph Guay , Tutt, third.
Elementary School Division -- Caleb DiPrete , Riverside, first; Cameron Carlton , Garrett, second; and Sabrina Birkett , Riverside, third.
Elected treasurer
Jasper A. Cooke , the director of public safety at Augusta State University, has been elected treasurer of the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Administrators Inc. for 2008-09.
Achievement grants
The following area students have received National Achievement scholarships from the National Achievement Scholarship Program:
Michael D. Walden , A.R. Johnson Health Science and Engineering High School, National Achievement NMSC Scholarship; and George S. Daniels , John S. Davidson Fine Arts School, National Achievement $2,500 Scholarship.
Davidson team wins
A team from John S. Davidson Fine Arts School finished first in the recent Adam Smith Division of the Economics Challenge in Atlanta. Team members are Brooke Skelley, Mark Sims, Yao Kang and Elizabeth Caldwell , who was also the highest individual scorer.
Students win stars
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America members from Hephzibah and Butler high schools participated in the Region Six Students Taken Action with Recognition event recently at Lakeside Middle School. All of the members received silver stars and will advance to state competitions in Athens, Ga.
Academic honors

Accepted for program
Michael "Mikey" J. Foster , 12, a pupil at Augusta Preparatory Day School and son of Rob and Cindy Foster, has been accepted into the People to People Student Ambassador Class of 2008.
Augusta girl Huggable
Korynn White , 10, of Augusta, has been named a semifinalist in the 2008 Huggable Heroes search. Korynn is one of 109 young people recognized worldwide by Build-A-Bear Workshop.
Sisters are winners
Sisters Katherine and Mary Claire Birdsong , from the Sola Fidelis Symposium Home School in Augusta, are this year's regional winning team in the seventh- to ninthgrade category of the 16th annual Toshiba/National Science Teachers Association ExploraVision Awards program.
GSU's top alumnus
Orthopedist James Becton , of Augusta, has been named Alumnus of the Year by the College of Science and Technology at Georgia Southern University, Statesboro.
Gets Clemson award
Dr. Randy Smith , of Augusta, has received a Distinguished Service Award from Clemson (S.C.) University.
Graduate fellowship
Sheila Venkatesh , 20, of Augusta, has been awarded a graduate fellowship from the Alpha Lambda Delta Academic Honor Society for 2008-09 at University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Win history quiz
Students from Terrell Academy won the Black History Quiz Bowl held recently by the Lucy Craft Laney Museum of Black History.
Team members are Darius Turner, Neema Colon, Zavier Jones, Jordan Dish , alternate Kevin Reed , coach Jesse Arnold and administrator Kim Baxter .
