Augusta's motorists had a brief reprieve from construction delays during the Masters Tournament, but work now returns in earnest on several major roads, officials said. The Georgia Department of Transportation is working on at least five major projects in Richmond and Columbia counties:
BOBBY JONES INTERCHANGE
Crews are working on a $192 million project to restructure the interchange by adding flyover ramps. The plans also include a redesigned interchange at Bobby Jones Expressway and Wheeler Road.
STATUS: Workers are pouring bridge columns and decks on Interstate 20 and Wheeler Road.
There are also traffic shifts on Wheeler Road to remove curbs and gutters and to begin the realignment of Marks Church Road.
EXPECTED COMPLETION: July 31, 2010
BELAIR ROAD TRAFFIC SIGNAL
The traffic signals from Park West Drive to I-20 are being upgraded.
STATUS: Workers are installing new traffic poles and fiber optic cables for the signals.
EXPECTED COMPLETION: Sept. 30
I-20 WIDENING
Crews are adding additional lanes from the Savannah River to Washington Road.
They are also replacing and reconstructing bridges at Washington Road and River Watch Parkway.
STATUS: Workers are installing columns for the Washington Road and River Watch bridges.
EXPECTED COMPLETION: Oct. 31, 2009
I-20 SOUND WALL
Crews are installing sound wall barriers to both sides of I-20 near Belair Road.
STATUS: Concrete for part of the barrier is being poured this week.
EXPECTED COMPLETION: Aug. 10
BUNGALOW ROAD REPAVING
Repaving, reconstruction and drainage reconstruction are under way along the road.
STATUS: Crews are installing the utilities. The road will be closed for the duration of the work.
EXPECTED COMPLETION: September
EAST BOUNDARY ROAD
There is ongoing work such as resurfacing and new drainage.
STATUS: Crews are working on resurfacing the road.
EXPECTED COMPLETION: Summer
