Teen receives life sentence for raping woman in store

  • Follow Metro

An Augusta teenager pleaded guilty Tuesday to the rape of a woman in a clothing store bathroom.

The guilty pleas cut short the Richmond County Superior Court two-day trial for Michael A. Whitmore, 18.

Assistant District Attorney Adam King said Mr. Whitmore pleaded guilty to rape, aggravated sodomy, kidnapping, armed robbery and a weapon charge. He was sentenced to life in prison plus five years. Mr. King prosecuted Mr. Whitmore for the sexual assault of a woman at gunpoint in the restroom of Goody's Family Clothing in south Augusta on Feb. 5, 2007.

After the assault, Mr. Whitmore walked the victim to the store's front door. That's when the 25-year-old mother of two dropped a clue before the store employees.

Estelle Batiste testified Tuesday morning that she entered the restroom that afternoon to hear a woman crying. Two voices said they were having sex, Ms. Batiste said. She told them to leave.

She was already worried something was wrong when Mr. Whitmore walked the woman past her and the victim dropped her purse, Ms. Batiste testified.

Mr. Whitmore brought the woman back into the store and asked whether the employees had found her purse, Ms. Batiste testified. The woman edged away from Mr. Whitmore and slid to the floor sobbing, she testified.

Mr. Whitmore tried to tell Richmond County sheriff's Sgt. Richard Roundtree that he found the distraught woman and only intended to walk her to her car. Later he said she initiated the sexual encounter. He denied having a weapon. The victim told investigators Mr. Whitmore raped her at gunpoint.

After a store video was shown on television, the sheriff's office received a tip the next day that the suspect was Mr. Whitmore. Detectives found a realistic replica of a handgun at his home.

What an ugly statement to make about his parents, you don't know that they are not good parents. Even people with the best parents committ crimes. His parents weren't there holding his hand when this happened, so why blame them? Glad to see him off the streets.

Panther: You are so right. Why are we so quick to judge? I'm glad he's in jail but don't diss the entire (possibly innocent)family! They have now lost a brother/son/cousin as well.

So many people feel parents

So many people feel parents don't influence their children's actions. I guess that's why so many don't. Someone gave this fool the wrong information about rape. He's much wiser now.

Now lets hope this conviction

Now lets hope this conviction stands and he is not released on some little misquoted remark or some other technicality....He took something from this woman that will never be replaced and therefore the sentence fits the crime. The only sentence better would be to put him in a 5 by 5 cell and never release him... ever. We cage wild animals.... these "people" should be treated no difference.

devilshly - that's for rape

devilshly - that's for rape of a child, which by the way, I have no problem with that. My guess is that by now, Whitmore is Bubba/Leroy/Carl's "girlfriend", and he now knows what rape feels like. On good behavior, he'll be out in seven or so years, having hopefully learned a lesson. We shall all see.

"life +" means no parole

"life +" means no parole hearing for at least 10 years, good time doesn't count and the "+" means he'll almost certainly not make parole the first time.

Check the Department of

Check the Department of Corrections website for Georiga. He committed at least 3 of the "Seven Deadly Sin" he will bring all his time to the table and nothing less. Another example of how crime has been glorified in the media for our children. They see crime on TV, it is glorified and they may or maynot get caught. If you watch some of these shows they never show what happens when they lock the doors on you for years, the show will stop short of showing the "TRUTH" of life in the "big House or "joint". If they can see what really goes on in the "joint", "big house". If they knew the "TRUTH" they would think twice before commiting crimes. Kids from good family committ crimes just as children from disfunctional families. We have been told not to spank our children. Time out is the best way to handle discipline problems. I guess "time out" has really gotten us "TIME OUT" in ways we never expected. Lastly we have made a big mistake by putting our children on meds to help them deal with life. When off the meds the kids can't deal with life because they don't have the coping skills because they have lived most of their life on a pink cloud.

I remember when this

I remember when this happened, and if I'm not mistaken, a family member turned this kid in to police. Although I don't agree with Debby, and I could be just as wrong as I think she is, but I do feel that somewhere along the way something just wasn't right at Whitmore's home. When Whitmore was arrested, the AC said that he was a 17 y/o freshman in high school at the time. That alone is cause for concern. However, whatever his circumstances may have been at home don't negate his actions nor should they have lessened his punishment, as evidenced by the judge's sentence.

Does it really matter what

Does it really matter what the ethnic make up is. She was raped plain and simple. Does her ethnic make up make her any less a rape victim? Too much, your comment seems to indicate that you think this individual is only being punished because he is Black, making this a racial issue. Patricia you (along with the next few commenters) continue this train of thought with your comments. I got a little news for you race baiters, both Black and White. Justice is no longer determined by the color of your skin, but rather by the color in your wallet. So unless your net worth is more than 6 figures don't expect too much along the lines of justice. When will people realize that crime is commited by individuals of both races? No one race is more prone to commit crimes than any other. We just like to think that they do. Check the prisons. They're full of people from all walks of life. Rather than American's being so divisive, why don't we try to get along a little better.

"The ethnic makeup of the victim does not matter. She is a victim, " I Co-sign! I finally agree with Rose on something. Someone please call 9-1-1! Just kidding, Rose. All we need to know today is that Whitmore is not going to hurt anyone again. I said this when it first happend, and I'll say it again. My sister worded at that Goody's until about a month before this happened and it could well have been her or any number of her former co-workers that was rapped. Whitmore may have possibly had some problems, but everyone is better off because of his incarceration.

Here's a thought-can you

Here's a thought-can you believe that there are actually instances where the situation takes place just as the defendent describes? Then you get folks locked up for eons only later to get released once the truth comes out. I guess that's why they have to have court times, etc.and I'm glad this guy went ahead and pled guilty. God bless this woman, however, who had to endure such a crime and I pray that she continues to heal.

Many years ago a TV special named "Scared Straight" aired just about everywhere. First time offenders were ushered through Rahway Prison in NJ and were lectured by a "lifer" about what it was like to spend any time in prison. It scared a lot of kids straight.
