what witness? I don't see much credibility in this reporting. Thanks AC for attempting to stir poop. How much did you pay said 'witness?'
A Martinez man was killed Wednesday night in a two-vehicle wreck in downtown Augusta that involved an off-duty Aiken County sheriff's deputy.
Richmond County Deputy Coroner Johnny McDonald identified the man who was killed as Samuel Jason Dickerson, 32, of the 3300 block of Quaker Springs Road.
The wreck occurred about 8:30 p.m. at the intersection of Broad and Eve streets. Richmond County sheriff's Deputy Robert Bryant said an open-top 1976 model Jeep driven by Mr. Dickerson attempted to turn left from Broad Street onto Eve Street. At that point, Deputy Bryant said, the Jeep was struck by a 2004 GMC 1500 pickup driven by the Aiken County deputy. Deputy Bryant said Mr. Dickerson was ejected from his vehicle.
Aiken County sheriff's Deputy Kenneth Lively suffered a broken hand in the wreck and was taken to Medical College of Georgia Hospital, as were Stephanie Bryant and Felicia Drawdy, who were passengers in the truck, according Aiken County sheriff's Lt. Michael Frank.
All three were treated and released.
Tonya Corbett, who was in the car with Mr. Dickerson, was taken to MCG for treatment and has been released, according to Richmond County sheriff's Maj. Richard Weaver.
Lt. Frank and Deputy Bryant said no alcohol was involved in the wreck. Richmond County did not conduct a field sobriety test because deputies did not have probable cause, Deputy Bryant said.
Deputy Lively was questioned at MCG by authorities and it was determined that he had not been drinking, Lt. Frank said after interviewing him. The deputy requested a blood alcohol test from a nurse, but it was not administered.
Deputy Bryant said Mr. Dickerson was ruled at fault in the wreck.
Lt. Frank said Deputy Lively has worked for the department since August 2007.
A witness at the scene, who didn't want to be named, told an Augusta Chronicle reporter Wednesday night that he and his wife saw an officer pouring out two bottles taken from the GMC's back seat. Lt. Frank said that there might have been a soft drink bottle in the vehicle but that there was no alcohol.
Deputy Bryant said there was no alcohol at the scene. He speculated that deputies might have been pouring out gasoline from a container found in one of the vehicles, but he didn't know which one.
The witness said he found Mr. Dickerson lying on a front porch, bleeding severely, and attempted to assist him. Blood was visible on the porch and a hazmat team was on site as late as 1 a.m., cleaning the area.

So sad someone has to die, in this day and time, from not wearing a seatbelt! When I was young, I didn't wear one. I had a really bad car wreck 12 years ago (They lost me three times on the operating table!) and if I hadn't been wearing a seatbelt there would have been no need for the paramedics to attempt to take me to the hospital. I feel sad for Mr. Dickerson's family and friends.
A witness that doesn't wish to be identified, an unnamed source, rumor has it, ...... The police report says Mr Dickerson attempted to turn left in front of an oncoming vehicle. The rest is speculation. I saw no mention of a seatbelt.
If it was gas, then the police knows that it is illegal to pour it on the ground. As a former fire fighter I've worked many wrecks, and the last thing anybody should do is pour gas near the crash site. Officers should not have poured anything out on the ground.
If it was Gasoline being poured on the ground, it was a FEDEREAL waste violation as well as a hazardous problem. That should be investigated. It is not optional.
Wow, a man is dead and you all are worried whether or not someone poured gas on the ground. You can not pin a cover up on the deputy, so lets charge him with litering at least we can get something on those big bad police.
How can any of you determine the credibility of the man and wife that witnessed the pouring of some liquid taken from the deputy's truck. It would be illegal and dangerous to pour gasoline out and why would a law enforcement officer pour out soft drinks? It seems to me that law enforcement involved in an accident should be held to the same requirements of a blood alcohol test or breathalyzer test as anyone else would be. Also the man killed was ejected from the vehicle and in an earlier news report it stated they did not think he was wearing a seat belt.
Amazing as Americans even at the lost of human life we can find
selfish gain with unsustaniated finger pointing
More speculation. The alcohol test, or lack thereof, is pretty obvious though. Speed (demonstrated by the effect of the impact) and poor driving techniques by both drivers were the primary contributing factors.
At the very least speculation does not serve any purpose whatsoever....The whole situation was it seems an accident....A tragic accident....
I totally agree cncop1!!!!
While it is a tragic accident once again deputies missed an opportunity to prove they do not look after their own. I don't know if the deputy was drinking or not but I sure would like to know why he was not given a breathalyzer or a blood alcohol test. Remember not to long ago when they crucified a log truck driver because a deputy was involved. Like I said then it just smacks of cover-up. They should go out of their way to show that everyone is treated the same. That would remove any doubt whatsoever. As for the deputies pouring something out it sounds awful suspicious. Of course who really knows how it happened with the AC's reporting skills.
They said numerous times that alcohol played no role in the accident, so let it drop.
Nothing new with the AC trying to stir up something from nothing.
If no breathalyzer test or blood alcohol test was done on anyone, you cannot say alcohol played no role. All I am saying, everyone including law enforcement personnel involved in an accident where someone is killed or critically injured, should be required to take the tests. Then there would be no speculation or finger pointing.
Jason, "Little D" to those of os who actually knew him was a wonderful person. He had been one of my closest friends for over 15 years. He always told people that I was like a little sister to him. When my mother had surgery last July, he was right by my side the entire time even taking time off work just to be there with us. He gave everything and all he wanted in return was love. To those of you who seem to get so much enjoyment out of arguing back and forth about what happened, and who was at fault, now would be a great time to give it a rest! Your energy would be better spent praying for those he left behind. Did any of you even stop finger pointing long enough to think about the fact that this man now has friends and family (including a small son) that have to live the rest of their lives knowing that he's never coming back? All we have left now are memories and we don't need the memory of complete strangers arguing on the internet just to see who can sound the smartest. The next time any of you think up a comment to post blaming one person or the other for this death, please just stop and think about the fact that there was a DEATH, we will never get jason back. PRAY INSTEAD!
you know what you stupid idiots are not looking at anything but just proving how stupid you are. even if the officer was drinking it played no part in the accident. the man that died caused the accident and it got him killed. you people just look for something to raose hell about the police and fire depts. what both depts should do is take a month off and let you idiots take care of yourselves and not worry about it. then maybe just maybe you would wake up and act like you had some sense. i doubt it though. stupid stays stupid. aint augusta people just great? NOT
Hypocrite2008, you're in the correct place, maybe I should have said it different. Anytime someone is killed it is extremely tragic, but, sorry to say I didn't think about that part at 1st as pourinng gas on the ground (as they said) is extremely hazardous to the others as well as an environmental and health hazard to the living. My heard does go out to him and his for it is indeed awful...sorry
I thought a sobriety test was mandatory in any wreck casusing death. Something smells here. Guess where he poured "gas" will not be another pot hole.
The Law said there was no alcohol involved from either party and that is good enough for me. The Liberal mindset is always looking to point fingers, especially at figures of authority. Let this man rest in peace and let's pray for all those involved.
This smells of a cover-up big time. I can tell you without a doubt that Richmond County's S.O.P ' STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE' is to take all parties who were operating a vehicle that resulted in serious injury or death to the E.R. for a drug and alcohol screen. This is something that I personally did at least 7 times while working for the Sheriffs Dept. Three where vehicle pedestrian accident's that resulted in one subject who struck a man on Gordon Hwy at no fault of his, and he had a blood alcohol of slightly over .04, which is legally D.U.I. if you were involved in a accident that resulted in serious injury or death. Unless the law has changed in the last 8 years, there is something wrong with this picture
There was a statute that required a BA in any accident involving a "serios injury." However the problem with the law was the vague meaning of what constitutes a "serios injury" although a death certainly would meet that definition. In addition the statute allowed a "search" of someone's bodily fluids or breath without probable cause. For these reasons, the Ga. Supreme Court found the statue to be unconstitutional. There must be probable cause of drinking or use of drugs before a breath test or blood alcohol test is done.
Acutally REALITY CHECK!!!! Jason left behind 3 small children. 1 boy and 2 girls.
First of all my THOUGHTS and PRAYERS are with the Dickerson family!!! Jason was a Good friend to me! And, to sit here and read what some of you have wrote is sad on YOUR part. Little-D was a wonderful and caring person... He was always worried about others and would have done Anything to help!!! As far as Deputy Bryant, and Lt Frank ok put yourself in this situation if it had been someone you care about, would you not feel better to have known there was a blood alcohol test ran. Also, whoever and whatever kind of nurse doesn't give one when it was requested!!!!!!! Anyone, that has common since knows if a wreck just happened and someone has gotten killed, you AIN'T worried about pouring gas out!!!! Hello, Im a girl and I know that.....God Bless the Dickerson Family! IM SO SORRY JASON, YOUR IN A BETTER PLACE....WE ALL LOVE YOU AND MISS YOU!!!!!!!!!! You will Always be remembered, esp. your smile that you always had!
Deputy Bryant said there was no alcohol at the scene. He speculated that deputies might have been pouring out gasoline from a container found in one of the vehicles, but he didn't know which one.
So did that deputy even try to find out what was poured out?
s351 should be given a trophy for the most poorly-written, idiotic post ever seen. Just goes to show the moronic mentality of some AC readers. What would it take to wake him or her up?
Is the state law regarding alcohol testing of drivers involved in an accident, especially a fatal one, different in different parts of the state? My son was involved in a non-fatal accident a few years ago and was told that although there was no indication that he was drunk, a blood alcohol was standard procedure when an accident occurs. The other driver had minor injuries and fled the hospital in order to avoid a blood alcohol test. In this accident there is no indication as to the speed of either vehicle but chances are that the victim would not have made a left turn in front of the oncoming vehicle if he hadn't believe that he had time to do so. I'm saddened for his family and friends.
