Chelsea needs to spread her wings

  • Follow Editorials

The Clintons have, for years, woven a protective cocoon around their daughter Chelsea. And we respect and applaud them for that.

But they are being unrealistic -- and, frankly, condescending and manipulative -- if they expect to be able to let her fly out of the cocoon long enough to campaign for mom, and then to fly back to her private retreat unhindered by challenging questions from the gallery.

The Clintons, as usual, want it both ways. They want to tattoo "Off Limits" on their daughter's forehead, but they want her to go out and hit the stump and become a public voice in mom's quest for the presidency.

Sorry, mom and dad. Little Chelsea is way past the pupal stage when she takes the campaign stage.

Yet, Chelsea doesn't take questions from reporters. And when she's been asked by citizens in several campaign appearances about the effect of the Lewinsky scandal, she's bristled that it's none of our business.

Another Clinton family trait: We'll tell you little people what your business is and isn't.

If only she could learn her father's finger-wagging ways, she'd be all set.

If young Chelsea doesn't want to answer the tough questions, then she deserves no time in the spotlight, and her stump speeches for mom should hold no sway for anyone.

If she wants to stay in her cocoon, that's fine.

She may notice it's awfully hard to be heard in there, though.

grouse

Chelsea can answer whatever she wants. Another Chronicle non-issue.

patriciathomas

The Bush daughters are fair game but the Clinton girl needs special treatment. The double standard is the rule, not the exception. I agree with grouse, this is an every day occurrence. Where's the story.

GnipGnop

While I am no Hillary fan. I wouldn't want my kids to have to answer about infidelity in mine and my wife's marriage. (not that there is anything to tell) Ask her questions about her mom's or dad's policy. Ask about issues that they clash with republicans about. To ask someone's child questions about personal issues like this shows that this person has no class. There is nothing wrong with asking tough questions but some questions should be off limits.

patriciathomas

Ignore the information behind the curtain. We'll tell you what we want you to ask.

christian134

This article doesn't merit the Chronicle's attention.....Leave the girl alone....She doesn't want to answer these questions and frankly I believe to ask them is "yellow journalism".

shivas

I'm sorry, who said Chelsea was off-limits? Another made-up article by the AC to attack the Clinton's, even an innocent daughter.

patriciathomas

Shivas, you need to read some more headlines. Then you'll know who said Chelsea was off limits.

shivas

I guess I can find those headlines in Fox news and the Limbaugh show.

christian134

Try and understand shivas....

patriciathomas

No shivas, you'd never understand those headlines. Try the AP, they're geared toward your knowledge range.

WW1949

Shivas, why are you so hell bent to defend people who would not even let you come into their house, sit at the table with you and would tax you to death for all the programs. Remember the tax bite on someone making 30,000.00, 40,50 or 100,000.00 is much harder than on the person making 90 million. So they take 45 million, that leaves 45 million but if they take 50 thousand from someone making 100 thousand it is quite different.

convertedsoutherner

They put her out there, in front of the people, and then proceed to tell everyone what they can ask her. I guess this is their idea of the political process.

WHATDIDIDO

Well, let the Bush daughters answer all the questions by drugs and alcohol use. The only thing they can ask Chelsea is about her parents. Yet the Bush daughters have enough scandal of their own making, to answer for. So, I say let the Clinton Daughter and the Bush Daughters have a joint question and answer session.

patriciathomas

When the Bush girls campaign, they answer all questions. Let Chelsea do the same.(her scandals have all been covered up)

teabag1963

pat, give me one, just one instance, when either of the bush girls ever said anything.i've never heard either say anything, about anything.they are an embarassment and are kept far from the cameras as is bush's mother.they'll be rememberd for sticking their tongues out at the cameraman and nothing else.oh i forgot the one that's getting married did appear on ellen degeneris's show and called daddy from the show.she asked at the end "you aren't mad at me calling are you"?what a weasel of a kid! you're twenty something not a child still are you?many networks showed this clip.these skanks will never be in chelsea's league.

WHATDIDIDO

What scandals? Yeah, right. They have covered up any scandals that involves Chelsea. If you believe that , I have a bridge over the James Brown Arena for sell.

double_standard

Slow news day.

shivas

You folks tend to forget that this country enjoyed economic prosperity and a budget surplus under the Clinton Administration. What has the past 8 years given us? That's the reason the Bush administration has a vote of no confidence from the American people. And please, when the Clinton's get bashed for wanting to protect their child, it rally rises to the level of absurdity.

Little Lamb

I hope that any daughter who is asked by a reporter about her father's sexual affairs would say, "It's none of your business."

Little Lamb

Or maybe a better answer would be, "Go ask him."

gagirl40

Hey kids..what about Cheney's response to Wolf Blitzer's questions about his openly gay pregnant daughter? Did we forget that one? I mean she was on the campaign trail for her Dad and she's an adult...why was she off-limits? Funny how soon we forget.

shivas

gagirl, Cheney was openly bashing gay marriage, and speaking out against gay adoptions. I think that was legitimate. I think it is legitimate to ask Chelsea anything, and let her respond. However, to bash her parents because they want to protect her, well, that's just stupid.

FallingLeaves

She should just say no comment. It's a tasteless, insensitive and inappropriate question to ask her and she doesn't have to answer it if she doesn't want to. That was a bad reflection on the one that was doing the asking. But I didn't like the tone of her answer, it was angry, arrogant and strident, but then she has Hillary/mom for a role model in speaking, so what did I expect? On the other hand, if I had been in her shoes, I have no idea how I would have reacted to the first posing of that question. I might have done no better than Chelsea did.

iknewyourmother

The bush girls are defintely more attractive, thanks to laura.

lowellbrown

Chelsea Clinton is a lovely, educated, accomplished young woman. One must wonder why the editorial writer chose to attack her with this kind of vacuous blather. Apparently, the writer intended to put on a 16-ounce glove to bash Chelsea with, as opposed to using a bare fist. What he actually accomplished was an ineffectual swipe at the face of journalistic respectability. Mr. Editor, you're supposed to be better than that.

toppergem

Double standard, I have to agree. It has to be a slow, slow day.

WHATDIDIDO

Baronees, you talk about Hillary as a role model, it was not her daughter out there abusing drugs and alcohol.

KSL

Defend people for what they do or attack people for what they do, but don't defend or attack based on party affiliation or political views. Have the same standard for everyone.

patriciathomas

How do you know Hypo? What do you know about Chelsea? She's not good at answering questions and everyone picks on her. What else?

ITDoc

"Defend people for what they do or attack people for what they do, but don't defend or attack based on party affiliation or political views. " KSL, you just removed the entire reason most post on here: to attack and inflame.
